Comprehensive evaluation of 20 pomegranate(Punica granatum L.) cultivars in China

Recent investigations on pomegranate products have significantly increased and successfully drawn consumers’ attention to nutritional and medicinal values, promoting the pomegranate industry’s development worldwide. However, little information on pomegranates grown in China is available. Morphological and chemical characterizations of fruits and arils from 20 pomegranate cultivars in six regions of China were investigated. Combined with overall scores by principal component analysis, ‘Yushiliu No. 1’, ‘Taishanhong No. 2’, ‘Tunisia’ and ‘Mollar’ were promising cultivars, and Chinese researchers bred the first two. It was surprising that ‘Mollar’ had bigger fruit size and more aril moisture grown in China than in Spain. Cultivars with higher anthocyanin content in arils were ‘Turkey’, ‘Moyu’ and ‘Red Angel’, which might be used as the source of natural red food colourants. While red husk ‘Hongruyi’ and ‘Hongshuangxi’ with higher vitamin C, aril moisture and lower titratable acid in arils, might also be promising cultivars for further various utilization. Furthermore, the comparison of ‘Tunisia’ fruits from four regions revealed that cultivation locations had more influence on fruit traits than genotypes. Maturity index classification was established for Chinese pomegranate cultivars. Therefore, the results would provide a valuable guide for agricultural cultivation, industrial utilization, and breeding.

The deactivation of nickel hydroxide to the electrooxidation of hypophosphite on anickel electrode was studied by means of in situ UV-Vis subtractive reflectance spectroscopy. Theexperimental results show that when the potential is lower than-1.0 V (SCE), the surfacc on nickelelectrode is free of nickel hydroxide, on which hypophosphite is active. When the potential movespositively to about-0.75V, two absorbency bands around 300 nm and 550 nm, which were ascribedto the formation of α-nickel hydroxide, were observed, nickel is oxidized to α-nickel hydroxide.Severe deactivation of the surface occurs when the nickel surface is covered with nickel hydroxide,which separates the hypophosphite ion from nickel substrate.

The aim of this study was to investigate the role of seminal plasma miR-210-3p in the impairment of semen quality caused by *** study included 102 patients whose semen quality was normal when they were diagnosed with varicocele.A 2-year follow-up for included patients was performed,and they were divided into Group A(semen quality became abnormal)and Group B(semen quality remained normal)according to the results of semen analysis during the *** parameters and seminal plasma miR-210-3p expression were investigated by semen analysis and quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction,*** vitro experiments with GC-2 cells were performed to explore the role of miR-210-3p in spermatogenic *** results of quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction showed that the level of seminal plasma miR-210-3p in Group A was higher than that in Group B both after 2-year follow-up and when they were diagnosed with varicocele(both P<0.01).Apoptosis and proliferation assays showed that miR-210-3p induces apoptosis of spermatogenic cells by promoting caspase-3 *** conclusion,our study indicated that seminal plasma miR-210-3p induces spermatogenic cell apoptosis by activating caspase-3 in patients with *** plasma miR-210-3p may be a potential biomarker for predicting impaired semen quality caused by varicocele.

Genetic Improvement of Root Growth Contributes to Efficient Phosphorus Acquisition in maize (Zea mays L.)

Maize plants adapt to low phosphorus （P） stress by increasing root growth. It is of importance to know the extent to which genetic improvement of root growth can enhance P acquisiton. In the present study, the contribution of root growth improvement to efficient P acquisition was evaluated in two soils using T149 and T222, a pair of near isogenic maize testcrosses which were derived from a backcross BC 4 F 3 population. T149 and T222 showed no difference in shoot biomass and leaf area under normal growth conditions, but differed greatly in root growth. T149 had longer lateral roots and a larger root surface area compared to T222. In calcareous soil, when P was insufficient, i.e., when P was either supplied as KH 2 PO 4 at a concentration of 50 mg P kg-1 soil, or in the form of Phy-P, Ca3-P or Ca10-P, a 43% increase in root length in T149 compared to T222 resulted in an increase in P uptake by 53%, and shoot biomass by 48%. In acid soil, however, when P supply was insufficient, i.e., when P was supplied as KH 2 PO 4 at a concentration of 100 mg P kg-1 soil, or in the form of Phy-P, Fe-P or Al-P, a 32% increase in root length in T149 compared to T222 resulted in an increase in P uptake by only 12%, and shoot biomass by 7%. No significant differences in the exudation of organic acids and APase activity were found between the two genotypes. It is concluded that genetic improvement of root growth can efficiently increase P acquisition in calcareous soils. In acid soils, however, improvements in the physiological traits of roots, in addition to their size, seem to be required for efficient P acquisition.

The rhizosheath,a layer of soil grains that adheres firmly to roots,is beneficial for plant growth and adaptation to drought *** is a perennial C4 grass which can form contact rhizosheath under drought *** this study,we characterized the microbiomes of four different rhizocompartments of two switchgrass ecotypes(Alamo and Kanlow)grown under drought or well-watered conditions via 16S ribosomal RNA amplicon *** four rhizocompartments,the bulk soil,rhizosheath soil,rhizoplane,and root endosphere,harbored both distinct and overlapping microbial *** root compartments(rhizoplane and root endosphere)displayed low-complexity communities dominated by Proteobacteria and *** to bulk soil,Cyanobacteria and Bacteroidetes were selectively enriched,while Proteobacteria and Firmicutes were selectively depleted,in rhizosheath *** from Proteobacteria or Firmicutes were specifically selected in Alamo or Kanlow rhizosheath *** drought stress,Citrobacter and Acinetobacter were further enriched in rhizosheath soil,suggesting that rhizosheath microbiome assembly is driven by drought ***,the ecotype-specific recruitment of rhizosheath microbiome reveals their differences in drought stress ***,these results shed light on rhizosheath microbiome recruitment in switchgrass and lay the foundation for the improvement of drought tolerance in switchgrass by regulating the rhizosheath microbiome.

Through using the methods of finite-size effect and short time dynamic scaling,we study the criticalbehavior of parasitic disease spreading process in a diffusive population mediated by a static vector *** analysis of parasitic disease spreading we find that this model presents a dynamical phase transition fromdisease-free state to endemic state with a finite population *** determine the critical population density,abovewhich the system reaches an epidemic spreading stationary *** also perform a scaling analysis to determine theorder parameter and critical relaxation *** results show that the model does not belong to the usual directedpercolation universality class and is compatible with the class of directed percolation with diffusive and conserved fields.

The density-dependent term in Skyrme forces is essential to simulate three-body and many-body correlations beyond the low-momentum two-body interaction. We speculate that a single density term may be insumcient and a higher-order density dependent term is added. The present work investigates the influence of higher-order density dependencies based on extended UNEDF0 and SkM＊ forces. Global descriptions of nuclear masses and charge radii are presented. The extended UNEDF0 force gives a global rms error on binding energies of 1.29 MeV. The influence on fission barriers and equation of state are also investigated. Perspectives to improve Skyrme forces are discussed, including global center-of-mass corrections and Lipkin-Nogami pairing corrections.

Cu nanowires covered by Ag particles is studied for potential applications in the next-generation *** date,the deformation mechanism in the Cu-Ag core-particle is not ***,molecular dynamics simulation is used to describe the Cu-Ag core-particle *** results show that the equilibrium structure of Ag particles is reconstructed,when the particle≤1.0 *** low temperature(1 K)indicate that three different deformation processes take part in the core-particle structure,depending on the size of Ag *** the particle diameter≤2.0 nm,the prevailing deformation mechanism is the emission of dislocations from the Cu *** the particle diameters ranging from 3.0 to 6.0 nm,the emission of misfit dislocations from the Ag-Cu interface is the dominant deformation *** the Ag particle≥6.0 nm,the deformation mechanism can be characterized by the slip band,consisting of the dislocations and amorphous *** elevated temperatures(2-400 K),the mechanical properties of the Ag-Cu core-shell system are nearly independent of temperature,whereas the structure with particles larger than 2.0 nm showed a strong dependence of its mechanical properties on *** on the results,the diameter-temperature plastic deformation map is proposed.
