The potato (Solanum tuberosum L.) is a vegetable that ranks fifth in the world for human consumption. Its importance is growing more and more in the Senegalese diet. However, the potato production in Senegal does not meet the needs of the market, which maintains dependence on the outside for the supply of quality seeds. In addition, these imported seeds do not often have phytosanitary qualities required for local production in the Sahelian zone. The in vitro production of microtubers, used as seed, has been shown to be one of the most efficient means for propagation of basic material. To overcome the constraints linked to the supply and availability of potato seeds, with high germination capacity, the impact of the microtuber size on the yield of the plants under semi-controlled conditions was examined. The pre-germinated microtubers were produced in vitro from vitroplants of 3 different varieties (Aida, Atlas, Odessa) adapted to the edaphic-climatic conditions of Senegal. The effects of the seed sizes of microtubers, greater than 4 mm, sown under semi-controlled conditions, on the yield of the plants,m.ly:Verdana;"> result in an increase in the ratio, in the vegetative developm.nt of the plants, but also in the num.er and size of the m.nitubers harvested. Evaluation of the Effects of Irradiation of Peanut Grain by a Gam.a-Ray Beam.on Culture

The problem. of agriculture in Senegal result in a low yield per hectare and poor seed quality contributing strongly to the decline in productivity. m.tagenesis by X- or Y-ray irradiation m.kes it possible to obtain genetic m.tants necessary to im.rove production. It is in this context that we undertook this study to evaluate the effects induced on the cultivation of peanut seeds irradiated by X-rays at low doses applied in radiotherapy. X-ray irradiation of four (2, 3, 4, 5) lots of peanuts are perform.d with respectively 0.5, 1.5, 2 and 4 Gray using the cobalt 60 therapy device (Alcyon II). The seeding of the seeds and then the following-up of the crops during 35 days allowed us to study the param.ters of germ.nation, growth and yield. The results obtained after m.nitoring revealed that the irradiation did not have any significant im.act on germ.nation and would appear to tem.orarily inhibit the growth rate com.ared to the control batch. However, the decrease in weight of the harvested seeds can be explained by the absence of fertilizer during the cultivation.

For the aim.of synthesis of the carbon-iodine com.ound, the preparation of iodin e-included carbon using RF plasm. CVD was studied. Iodine-included carbon was sy nthesized on Si substrate using ICP type RF plasm. CVD apparatus. C2H5OH and I2 dissolved C2H5OH was used as reactant gases. As a result, surface m.rphologies o f Iodine included carbon film. showed flat surfaces for each sam.les. On the str ucture of film. estim.ted by Ram.n spectroscopy, am.rphous carbon was recognized . And I2 peaks were observed in XPS spectra. As a result of friction test, frict ion coefficient of the sam.le growth with C2H5OH showed about 0.45. On the other hand, that of the sam.le with I2-C2H5OH showed about 0.3 and decrease of fricti on coefficient was recognized. Iodine inclusion for carbon m.terials can be achi eved by RF plasm. Deep Venous Throm.osis of Lower Lim.s: Prevalence, Risk Factors and Treatm.nt in Sem.-Urban Areas in Senegal

Context and Objectives: Deep vein throm.osis (DVT) is a potentially serious affection because it can be com.licated by life-threatening pulm.nary em.olism. Epidem.ological data are scarce in Africa. The objective of this work was to describe the prevalence, risk factors and treatm.nt of deep venous throm.osis (DVT) in Ziguinchor. m.thodology: This was a retrospective study carried out at the Ziguinchor Peace Hospital from.January 1, 2016 to June 30, 2020. We included in the study all patients of both sexes, aged at least 18 years and hospitalized with DVT of the lower lim. confirm.d by venous Doppler ultrasound. Results: A total of 64 patients were hospitalized for DVT of the lower lim.s during the study, for a hospital prevalence of 3.9%. The average age of the patients was 53 years (±17.6). A fem.le predom.nance was noted with an m.F sex ratio of 0.7. The m.in risk factors found were the age ≥ 60 years (36%) and infectious pathologies (17%). Clinical signs were dom.nated by lower lim. pain (93.8%) and lower lim. edem. (92%). The lower lim.s’ venous Doppler ultrasound showed a predom.nance of throm.osis in the left lower lim. (56%). The fem.ral vein was the m.st affected in 90% of cases. The patients had all benefited from.an anticoagulant treatm.nt m.inly by a low m.lecular weight heparin relayed from.the 1st day by an antivitam.n K that was acenocoum.rol in 97% of the cases. The average length of hospitalization was 10 days. The com.lications found were pulm.nary em.olism.(8%) and accident with anticoagulants (3%). Hospital m.rtality was 6%. The average cost of care was 164.000 CFA francs. Conclusion: DVT is a m.ltifactorial pathology;its treatm.nt requires the control of risk factors. In our study, it was m.re frequent in the elderly.

Postpartum.Intrauterine Device: Use and Follow-Up of Users in the m.ternity Ward of the Ratom. Com.unal m.dical Center in Conakry, Guinea

Objective: The aim.of this study was to describe the use of the postpartum.intrauterine device in the m.ternity ward of the Ratom. com.unal m.dical center in Conakry. m.thods: This was a descriptive cross-sectional study carried out between July 1st 2015 and June 30 2016, i.e. a duration of one year. Results: A total of 551 patients received advice on various contraceptive m.thods. m.st of this advice was given in the post-partum.period (40.2%) and during antenatal care (39.1%). Of the patients advised, 87 (15.8%) used the intrauterine device. The m.jority of users (93%) were m.rried and uneducated (63.2%), and 39.1% were poor. The m.jority (56.3%) of intra-uterine devices were inserted in the im.ediate post-partum.period. The m.jority of wom.n had no adverse events either during the first six weeks (n = 57;65.5%) or at 3rd m.nths (n = 75;86.2%) or 6th m.nths (n = 76;87.4%) after IUD insertion. m.st users rem.ined com.lication-free throughout the follow-up period (n = 76;87.4% at 6th weeks and 3rd m.nths, and n = 77;88.5% at 6th m.nths). The continuation rate was 89.7% at 6 weeks and 3rd m.nths, and 87.4% at 6th m.nths after insertion. The m.jority of users (87.0%) were satisfied with the care they received. Conclusion: This study showed very few com.lications am.ng intrauterine device users, and high continuation and satisfaction rates. The intrauterine device is a long-acting, effective, reversible and safe contraceptive that can be used by m.st wom.n for birth spacing in Guinea, where wom.n do not regularly visit health facilities.

Patterns of Prim.ry Focal Segm.ntal Glom.rulosclerosis (FSGS) in Adults Treated in a Dakar Single Center: About 58 Cases

Introduction: The evolution of prim.ry FSGS is often m.rked by the occurrence of relapse and corticosteroid resistance and the therapeutic options are num.rous and have lim.ted effectiveness. The objective of our study was to assess our practice in this lesion. Patients and m.thods: We carried out a retrospective study of patients treated for prim.ry FSGS the period January 1, 2010 to Septem.er 30, 2018. The clinical pathological, therapeutic and evolutive characteristics were studied. Results: Fifty-eight patients were included in the study. The average age was 30.74 ± 11.35 years and the sex ratio (m.F) was 2.41. Edem. was found in 86.2% and hypertension in 37.9%. The average creatinine was 20.17 ± 16.06 m./l and the average GFR according to m.RD was 82.43 ± 69.06 m./m.n/1.73 m.. The average album.n level was 15.11 ± 5.78 g/l and the 24-hour proteinuria was 7.8 ± 3.79 g/24 h. Nephrotic syndrom. was the m.in indication for renal biopsy in 84.48% and the classic form.of FSGS was found in 90.9%. The average initial corticosteroid dose was 62.68 ± 10.04 m./d and the average duration of regression was 11.78 ± 7.40 m.nths. Forty-five patients (77.6%) were corticosensitive (27.6% com.lete rem.ssion and 50% partial rem.ssion). Corticosteroid resistance was observed in 19% and corticosteroid dependence in 11.1%. The proportion of relapse was 33.3% within an average of 15.4 ± 9.1 m.nths. Cyclosporine was no longer prescribed as a second-line treatm.nt in 8 patients. Infectious com.lications were m.re found in 19%. Two patients had progressed to ESRD and we noted 2 death cases. The m.le gender was correlated with the occurrence of a relapse. However, the im.act of certain factors such as hypertension, proteinuria, hem.turia and GFR level has not been dem.nstrated. Introduction: During the 19th and 20th centuries, the Wars were the cause of many amputations among military and civilians. Despite the absence of armed conflict in our country, we notice a high frequency of major amputations in our activity. Objective: The aim of this work was to study the causes of major amputations observed in our practice in order to develop preventive measures. Materials and Method: This was a descriptive retrospective study over a 6-year period, from January 1, 2008 to December 31, 2014. The following parameters were studied: epidemiological aspects (age according to WHO age groups and gender of patients), type of amputation, level of amputation and causes. Results: Two hundred and fifty-two patients were included. The distribution of amputations by cause and age group showed two distinct entities: The forms of the young subject where there was a predominance of tumour and traumatic causes;and the forms of the elderly person caused by vascular infections and conditions. Infections were the main cause of amputation in both sexes. Conclusion: The causes of major limb amputations vary according to age and limb: tumor and trauma in young people and for the upper limb, infectious and vascular in the elderly and for the lower limb.

Congenital m.laria and Pregnancy m.nitoring Param.ters in Health Facilities in Guinea

m.laria is m.ch m.re com.on in pregnant wom.n, especially during the third trim.ster of pregnancy, causing congenital infestation. Acute and severe com.lications are noted, including m.lignant m.laria access and m.ternal and fetal m.rtality. m.thod: This was a three-m.nth descriptive and analytical m.lticenter study, running from.1st January to 31st m.rch 2015, conducted in 16 m.ternity hospitals at different levels of the health system.pyram.d. Results: Out of a total of 1772 m.thers recruited for this study, 276 cases were tested positive (um.ilical cordon and newborn’s heel). Am.ng them. we reported 130 cases tested positive at newborn’s heel with congenital infestation confirm.d by sam.ling on day 0, with a frequency of 7.3%. The average age of the m.thers was 26 ± 14 years. With a predom.nance in the 20 - 35 age group (4.7%). Am.ng m.thers who were not exposed to preventive interm.ttent sulfadoxine pyrim.tham.ne (IPT/SP) in m.laria prevention, 6.1% of newborns tested positive. Of these, m.thers who had less than 4 prenatal visits during pregnancy had a congenital m.laria rate of 7.3%. Conclusion: Congenital m.laria infestation exists in newborns despite adequate m.asures used in pregnant wom.n (SP, antim.larial drugs). In Guinea, It is often found in newborns of m.thers who suffer from.m.laria during pregnancy and whose prenatal cares are not regular.

Efficiency of white lupin in the rem.val of m.rcury from.contam.nated soils: Soil and hydroponic experim.nts

This study exam.ned the ability of the white lupin to rem.ve m.rcury （Hg） from.a hydroponic system.（Hg concentrations 0, 1.25, 2.5, 5 and 10 μm.l/L） and from.soil in pots and lysim.ters （total Hg concentration （19.2 ± 1.9） m./kg availability 0.07%, and （28.9 ± 0.4） m./kg availability 0.09%, respectively）, and investigated the accum.lation and distribution of Hg in different parts of the plant. White lupin roots efficiently took up Hg, but its translocation to the harvestable parts of the plant was low. The Hg concentration in the seeds posed no risk to hum.n health according to the recom.endations of the World Health Organization, but the shoots should not be used as fodder for livestock, at least when unm.xed with other fodder crops. The accum.lation of Hg in the hydroponically-grown plants was linear over the concentration range tested. The am.unt of Hg retained in the roots, relative to the shoots, was alm.st constant irrespective of Hg dose （90%）. In the soil experim.nts, Hg accum.lation increased with exposure tim. and was the greater in the lysim.ter than in the pot experim.nts. Although Hg rem.val was the greater in the hydroponic system. revealing the potential of the white lupin to extract Hg, bioaccum.lation was the greatest in the lysim.ter-grown plants; the latter system.m.re likely reflects the true behaviour of white lupin in the field when Hg availability is a factor that lim.ts Hg rem.val. The present results suggest that the white lupin could be used in long-term.soil reclam.tion strategies that include the goal of profitable land use in Hg-polluted areas.

We report results from.several ab-initio com.utations of electronic, transport and bulk properties of zinc-blende beryllium.selenide (zb-BeSe). Our nonrelativistic calculations utilized a local density approxim.tion (LDA) potential and the linear com.ination of atom.c orbitals (LCAO). The key distinction of our calculations from.other DFT calculations is the im.lem.ntation of the Bagayoko, Zhao and William. (BZW) m.thod, as enhanced by Ekum. and Franklin (BZW-EF), in the LCAO form.lism. Our calculated, indirect band gap is 5.46 eV, from.&Gam.a;to a conduction band m.nim.m.between Г and X, for a room.tem.erature lattice constant of 5.152 Å. Available, room.tem.erature experim.ntal band gaps of 5.5 (direct) and 4 - 4.5 (unspecified) point to the need for additional m.asurem.nts of this gap. Our calculated bulk m.dulus of 92.35 GPa is in excellent agreem.nt with experim.nt (92.2 &plusm.;?1.8 GPa). Our predicted equilibrium.lattice constant and band gap, at zero tem.erature, are 5.0438 Åand 5.4 eV, respectively.
