Balloon dilation of congenital perforated duodenal web in newborns: Evaluation of short and long-term results

BACKGROUND Incomplete congenital duodenal obstruction(ICDO)is caused by a congenitally perforated duodenal web(CPDW).Currently,only six cases of balloon dilatation of the PDW in newborns have been *** To present our experience of balloon dilatation of a perforated duodenal memb-rane in newborns with *** Five newborns who underwent balloon dilatation of the CPDW along a prein-stalled guidewire between 2021 and 2023 were *** newborns diagnosed with ICDO who underwent laparotomy were included in the control *** In all cases,good anatomical and clinical results were *** three cases,a follow-up study was conducted after 1 *** average time to start enteral feeding per os was significantly earlier in the study group(4.4 d)than in the laparotomic group(21.2 days;P<0.0001).The time spent by patients in the intensive care unit and hospital after balloon dilatation was also significantly *** determined the selection criteria for possible and effective CPDW balloon dilatation in newborns as follows:(1)Presence of dynamic radiographic signs of the passage of a radiopaque substance beyond the zone of narrowing or radiographic signs of pneumatisation of the duodenum and small bowel distal to the web;(2)presence of endoscopic signs of CPDW;(3)successful cannulation with a guidewire performed parallel to the endoscope,with holes in the congenital duodenal web;and(4)successful positioning of the balloon performed along a freestanding guidewire on the *** Strictly following selection criteria for newborns with ICDO caused by CPDW ensures that endoscopic balloon dilatation using a pre-installed guidewire is safe and effective and shows good 1-year follow-up results.

Artemia cyst production in Russia

In Western Siberia(Russia) there are about 100 Artemia lakes with total area over 1 600 km *** these lakes are located between 51°–56°N and 61°–82°*** general these lakes are shallow(depth less than 1.5 m),small or medium size(0.1 to 10 km 2);they are chloride;their total salinity is from 40 to 250 g/*** harvesting of cysts per year is only in 20–40 *** Russia 550 tons of dry Artemia cysts(14%–18% of the world production) were harvested *** includes about 350 tons in the Altai region and 200 tons in other *** our regular 20-year study period the cyst harvest was:95 tons in Kurgan;65 tons in Omsk,20 tons in Novosibirsk,20 tons in *** of increasing cyst harvest in Russia are considered in this *** the last 30 years the harvest of cysts in Russia has increased from 7–20 to 500–600 tons.A significant influence of dryness of the year was found on productivity in selected lakes,but taken for all the lakes together,the relationship was not *** optimal salinity for productivity of cysts in the lakes was *** of productivity of the lakes and the harvesting results showed that the stocks of cysts are underutilized by approximately 1.7 times.

Endoscopic treatment of blue rubber bleb nevus syndrome in a 4-year-old girl with long-term follow-up:A case report

BACKGROUND Blue rubber bleb nevus syndrome(BRBNS)is a rare vascular disease,difficult to diagnose and choose a treatment method,especially in young *** are several limiting factors to the use of enteroscopy for diagnostics and treatment in pediatric patients,in *** literature on BRBNS cases is limited and presents various therapeutic *** SUMMARY We present here a case of BRBNS involving a 4-year-old female,whose intestinal venous lesions were successfully treated by endoscopic sclerotherapy and aethoxysklerol *** lesions,typical for BRBNS,appeared on the 8th d of the child’s life and their number increased over the next several *** child also experienced episodes of critical decrease in hemoglobin level(by as much as 52 g/L)for several years,requiring iron supplementation and several blood *** capsule endoscopy revealed numerous vascular formations in the small *** combined findings of gastrointestinal venous formations and skin lesions prompted BRBNS ***-balloon enteroscopy was used to perform sclerotherapy,with aethoxysklerol foam.A positive effect was observed within 19 mo of *** continue to monitor the patient’s hemoglobin level,every 2 wk,and it has remained satisfactory(>120 g/L).CONCLUSION Endoscopic sclerotherapy can be effective in the clinical management of gastrointestinal manifestations of BRBNS in young children.

Isolation and Characterization of a New Cyanobacterial Strain with a Unique Fatty Acid Composition

A new cyanobacterial strain was isolated and purified from salt Lake Balkhash, Kazakhstan. According to its morphological and ultrastructural characteristics, 16S rRNA sequence and the fatty acid profile, the strain has been classified as Cyanobacterium spp. and assigned as Cyanobacterium sp. IPPAS B-1200. The strain is characterized by a non-temperature inducible Δ9-desaturation system, and by high relative amounts of myristic (14:0—30%) and myristoleic (14:1Δ9—10%) acids. The total amount of C14 fatty acids reaches 40%, which is unusually high for cyanobacteria, and it has never been reported before. The remaining fatty acids are represented mainly by palmitic (16:0) and palmitoleic (16:1Δ9) acids (the sum reaches nearly 60%). Such a fatty acid composition, together with a relatively high speed of growth, makes this newly isolated strain a prospective candidate for biodiesel production.
