One of the main challenges of biosensor design is to understand the protein or peptide stability on the chip in high resolution structural detail. Since conventional experimental methods are limited by the resolution for their applications on surface tethered peptides/proteins, a recently developed coarse grained simulation method is employed to explore the peptide/surface interaction in residue-level resolution. This work shows how the coarse grained model successfully describes peptide-surface interactions by evaluating thermal stability of the peptide cecropin PI in bulk solution and on surfaces by physical adsorption and chemical tethering. The simulation also reproduces observations of peptide orientations on the self-assembled monolayer surface from earlier experimental work. Additionally, using knowledge obtained from the simulations, specific mutations are suggested and the desired structure and pose on the surface is obtained. In summary, this work sheds a light on the reasonable biosensor design that is ~uided by simulations.

Although it is well known that water is essential for biological function, it has been a challenge to determine how water behaves near biomacromolecular interfaces, and what role water plays in influencing the dynamics of the biochemical machinery. By adopting a vibrational labeling strategy coupled with ultrafast two-dimensional infrared （2D-IR） spectroscopy, it has recently become possible to study hydration dynamics, site specifically at the surface of proteins and model membranes. We review our recent progress in measuring hydration dynamics in contexts ranging from small-molecule solutes to biomacromolecules in dilute, viscous, and crowded environments.

In most agricultural areas in the semi-arid region of the southern United States, wheat (Triticum aestivum l.) production is a primary economic activity. This region is drought-prone and projected to have a drier climate in the future. Predicting the yield loss due to an anticipated drought is crucial for wheat growers. A reliable way for predicting the drought-induced yield loss is to use a plant physiology-based drought index, such as Agricultural Reference Index for Drought (ARID). Since different wheat cultivars exhibit varying levels of sensitivity to water stress, the impact of drought could be different on the cultivars belonging to different drought sensitivity groups. The objective of this study was to develop the cultivar drought sensitivity (CDS) group-specific, ARID-based models for predicting the drought-induced yield loss of winter wheat in the llano Estacado region in the southern United States by accounting for the phenological phase-specific sensitivity to drought. For the study, the historical (1947-2021) winter wheat grain yield and daily weather data of two locations in the region (Bushland, TX and Clovis, NM) were used. The logical values of the drought sensitivity parameters of the yield models, especially for the moderately-sensitive and highly-sensitive CDS groups, indicated that the yield models reflected the phenomenon of water stress decreasing the winter wheat yields in this region satisfactorily. The reasonable values of the Nash-Sutcliffe Index (0.65 and 0.72), the Willmott Index (0.88 and 0.92), and the percentage error (23 and 22) for the moderately-sensitive and highly-sensitive CDS groups, respectively, indicated that the yield models for these groups performed reasonably well. These models could be useful for predicting the drought-induced yield losses and scheduling irrigation allocation based on the phenological phase-specific drought sensitivity as influenced by cultivar genotype.

Couples with a spinal cord injured male partner require assisted ejaculation techniques to collect semen that can then be further used in various assisted reproductive technology methods to achieve a pregnancy. The majority of men sustaining a spinal cord injury regardless of the cause or the level of injury cannot ejaculate during sexual intercourse. Only a small minority can ejaculate by masturbation. Penile vibratory stimulation and electroejaculation are the two most common methods used to retrieve sperm. Other techniques such as prostatic massage and the adjunct application of other medications can be used, but the results are inconsistent. Surgical sperm retrieval should be considered as a last resort if all other methods fail. Special attention must be paid to patients with T6 and rostral levels of injury due to the risk of autonomic dysreflexia resulting from stimulation below the level of injury. Bladder preparation should be performed before stimulation if retrograde ejaculation is anticipated. Erectile dysfunction is ubiquitous in the spinal cord injured population but is usually easily managed and does not pose a barrier to semen retrieval in these men. Semen analysis parameters of men with spinal cord injury are unique for this population regardless of the method of retrieval, generally presenting as normal sperm concentration but abnormally low sperm motility and viability. When sperm retrieval is desired in this population, emphasis should be placed on initially trying the simple methods of penile vibratory stimulation or electroejaculation before resorting to more advanced and invasive surgical procedures.

Androgen deprivation therapy （ADT） is widely used as standard therapy in the treatment of locally advanced and metastatic prostate cancer. While efficacious, ADT is associated with multiple side effects, including decreased libido, erectile dysfunction, diabetes, loss of muscle tone and altered body composition, osteoporosis, lipid changes, memory loss, gynecomastia and hot flashes. The breadth of literature for the treatment of hot flashes is much smaller in men than that in women. While hormonal therapy of hot flashes has been shown to be effective, multiple non-hormonal medications and treatment methods have also been developed. This article reviews current options for the treatment of hot flashes in patients taking ADT.

In 1861,Maxwell conceived the idea of the displacement current,which then made laws of electrodynamics more complete and also resulted in the realization of devices exploiting such displacement ***,it is presently unknown if such displacement current can result in large intrinsic ac current in ferroic systems possessing domains,despite the flurry of recent activities that have been devoted to domains and their corresponding conductivity in these ***,we report firstprinciples-based atomistic simulations that predict that the transverse(polarization-related)displacement currents of 71°and 109°domains in the prototypical BiFeO_(3) multiferroic material are significant at the walls of such domains and in the GHz regime,and,in fact,result in currents that are at least of the same order of magnitude than previously reported dc currents(that are likely extrinsic in nature and due to electrons).Such large,localized and intrinsic ac currents are found to originate from low-frequency vibrations at the domain walls,and may open the door to the design of novel devices functioning in the GHz or THz range and in which currents would be confined within the domain wall.
