Kaposi's sarcoma-associated herpesvirus(KSHV) is the infectious etiologic agent associated with Kaposi's sarcoma(KS), primary effusion lymphoma, and multicentric castleman disease. It has been shown that high KSHV prevalence and high incidence of both classic KS and AIDSassociated KS are found mostly among people of Uygur ethnicity in Xinjiang, while people of Han ethnicity in Xinjiang have a higher KSHV seroprevalence than those of other Han populations in china's Mainland. However, it is still unclear why there is such geographical and population variation in KSHV distribution in china. In this work, we focused on the populations in the Kashgar region and Urumqi area, where a total of 1294 research subjects were randomly selected to investigate the potential correlation between KSHV prevalence and different ethnicities in endemic areas of Xinjiang, and to determine risk factors that may affect KSHV infection rates or KS incidence. We identified a high seroprevalence of KSHV and high peripheral blood DNA infection in the general Uygur and Han populations in both Urumqi and Kashgar regions of Xinjiang, and determined that advancing age, low education level, and stationary population status affect KSHV infection rates. Further, KSHV-positive Uygur participants were shown to have higher prevalence of neutralizing antibodies and neutralizing antibody titers than KSHV-positive Han participants.

Evolution of Morphology and Structure During crystallization and Melting in Syndiotactic Polypropylene

Structure and morphology development during isothermal crystallization and subsequent melting of syndiotactic polypropylene(sPP) was studied by time-resolved simultaneous small-angle X-ray scattering(SAXS) and wide-angle X-ray diffraction(WAXD) methods with synchrotron radiation and differential scanning calorimetry(DSc). The time and temperature dependent parameters such as long period, L , crystal lamellar thickness, l c, amorphous layer thickness, l a, scattering invariant, Q , crystallinity, X c, lateral crystal sizes, L 200 and L 020 , and unit cell parameters a and b were extracted from SAXS and WAXD profiles. Decreasing long period and crystal thickness indicate that thinner secondary crystal lamellae are formed. The decreases in unit cell parameters a and b during isothermal crystallization process suggest that crystal perfection takes place. The changes in the morphological parameters (the invariant, Q , crystallinity, X c, long period, L , and the crystal thickness, l c) during subsequent melting were found to follow a two-stage melting process, corresponding to the dual endotherm behavior in the DSc scan. We conclude that the dual melting peaks are due to the melting of secondary and primary lamellae(first peak) and the subsequent recrystallization-melting process(second peak). Additional minor endothermic peak located at the lowest temperature was also detected and might be related to melting of secondary, thinner and defective lamellae. WAXD showed that during melting, thermal expansion was greater along the b axis than that along the a axis.

Short-term effect of supplemental yeast extract without or with feed enzymes on growth performance, immune status and gut structure of weaned pigs challenged with Escherichia coli lipopolysaccharide

Background： This study investigated the response of piglets receiving a yeast extract without or with a multi-enzyme mixture compared with an antimicrobial growth promoter（AGP） on performance, immune status and gut structure after an E. coli lipopolysaccharide（LPS） challenge. Thirty-six pigs were allotted to six treatments including： a non-challenged control（Ncc）; LPS-challenged control（cc）; cc ＋ AGP; cc ＋ yeast extract; cc ＋ enzymes; and cc ＋ enzymes ＋ yeast extract. On d 7, pigs were bled and thereafter injected with LPS or sterile saline. Blood samples were collected at 6, 48, and 96 h post-challenge. After 96 h post-challenge, pigs were euthanized to obtain duodenal, jejunal and ileal ***： Overall（d 1 to 11）, compared with cc pigs, AGP attenuated the LPS-induced reduction in ADG（P = 0.004）,ADFI（P = 0.03） and gain/feed ratio（P = 0.01）. At 6 h post-challenge, AGP pigs had lower plasma urea N（PUN; P = 0.02）and serum TNF-α concentration（P = 0.07）, and higher platelet count（P = 0.04） and serum IL-10 concentration（P = 0.02） than cc pigs. At 48 h post-challenge, AGP pigs had lower PUN（P = 0.02） than cc pigs, whereas enzymes ＋ yeast extract interacted non-additively（P = 0.001） to reduce PUN. At 96 h post-challenge, AGP pigs had lower PUN（P = 0.02）and higher duodenal（P = 0.03）, jejunal（P = 0.01） and ileal（P = 0.07） villus height than cc pigs. In addition, enzymes ＋yeast extract interacted additively and non-additively to reduce ileal IFN-γ（P 0.10） were observed between AGP and enzymes ＋ yeast extract pigs on other measured parameters except for the downregulation of ileal IFN-γ（P ＆lt; 0.0001） and TNF-α（P = 0.003） in enzymes ＋ yeast extract pigs at 96 h ***： The LPS challenged piglets receiving enzymes ＋ yeast extract showed beneficial responses in gut structure and immunity commensurate with those receiving antibiotics, though the latter had better overall growth performance.

We conducted a genome-wide linkage scan and positional association study to identify genes and variants influencing blood lipid levels among participants of the Genetic Epidemiology Network of Salt-Sensitivity （GenSalt） study. The GenSalt study was conducted among 1906 participants from 633 Han chinese families. Lipids were measured from overnight fasting blood samples using standard methods. Multipoint quantitative trait genome-wide linkage scans were performed on the high-density lipoprotein, low-density lipoprotein, and log- transformed triglyceride phenotypes. Using dense panels of single nucleotide polymorphisms （SNPs）, single-marker and gene-based association analyses were conducted to follow-up on promising linkage signals. Additive associations between each SNP and lipid phenotypes were tested using mixed linear regression models. Gene-based analyses were performed by combining P-values from single- marker analyses within each gene using the truncated product method （TPM）. Significant associations were assessed for replication among 777 Asian participants of the Multi-ethnic Study of Atherosclerosis （MESA）. Bonferroni correction was used to adjust for multiple testing. In the GenSalt study, suggestive linkage signals were identified at 2p11.2-2q12.1 [maximum multipoint LOD score （MML） = 2.18 at 2q11.2] and t lq24.3-11q25 （MML = 2.29 at 11q25） for the log-transformed triglyceride phenotype. Follow-up analyses of these two regions revealed gene-based associations of charged multivesicular body protein 3 （cHMP3）, ring finger protein 103 （RNF103）, AF4/FMR2 family, member 3 （AFF3）, and neurotrirnin （NTM） with triglycerides （P = 4 ×10^-4, 1.00 × 10^-5, 2.00 × 10^-5, and 1.00 × 10^-7, respectively）. Both the AFF3 and NTM triglyceride associations were replicated among MESA study participants（P = 1.00 × 10^-7 and 8.00× 10^-5, respectively）. The production of chemicals from lignocellulosic biomass provides opportunities to synthesize chemicals with new functionalities and grow a more sustainable chemical industry. However, new challenges emerge as research transitions from petrochemistry to biorenewable chemistry. compared to petrochemisty, the selective conversion of biomass-derived carbohydrates requires most catalytic reactions to take place at low temperatures (c) and in the condensed phase to prevent reactants and products from degrading. The stability of heterogeneous catalysts in liquid water above the normal boiling point represents one of the major challenges to overcome. Herein, we review some of the latest advances in the field with an emphasis on the role of carbon materials and carbon nanohybrids in addressing this challenge.
