A nonthermal plasma processing combined with Cr2O3/TiO2 cataly.t was applied to the decomposition of trichloroethy.ene （TCe）. A dielectric barrier discharge reactor was used as the nonthermal plasma reactor. The effects of the reaction temperature and input power on the decomposition of TCe and the formation of by.roducts including HCl, Cl2, CO, NO, NO2 and O3 were examined. With an identical input power, the increase in the reactor temperature lowered the decomposition of TCe. The presence of the cataly.t downstream the plasma reactor not only.enhanced the decomposition of TCe but also affected the distribution of by.roducts significantly. However any.sy.ergetic effect as a result of the combination of the nonthermal plasma with the cataly.t was not observed, i.e., the TCe decomposition ei^ciency.in the plasma- cataly.t combined sy.tem was almost similar to the sum of those obtained with each process. To improve the decomposition of TCe argon as a plasma-assisting gas was added to the feeding gas and a large enhancement in the TCe decomposition was achieved.

Curettage of the epithelium of the vas deferens might be a safe and effective method of male sterilization. We conducted a pilot study.of vasectomy.by.epithelial curettage with a novel microcurette called the Vas-X in 12 normal men requesting elective sterilization. Seminal fluid analy.is was obtained monthly.after the procedure for 6 months. Pain was assessed by.questionnaire. Three months after the procedure, all men attained sperm concentrations of less than 0.2 million sperm per mL, and seven were azoospermic. Post-procedural pain was minimal. Nine men ultimately.achieved and maintained azoospermia; however, 4 to 6 months after the procedure, sperm concentrations increased in three of the 12 subjects, necessitating repeat vasectomy. Microscopic examination of the vas deferens from these failures revealed re-canalization. Vasectomy.by.epithelial curettage can result in effective sterilization; however, 1/4 of the subjects were not effectively.sterilized by.the procedure due to re-canalization of the vas deferens. epithelial curettage will require further refinement to determine if it is a viable form of vasectomy.

中国面临着严重的能源短缺和环境污染问题,中国政府正在局部几个省份内政策性鼓励燃料乙醇生产和使用。尽管当前主要是用玉米和谷物作为生产乙醇的原料,然而中国具有大量潜在的低成本的纤维素生物质原料,可以极大地扩大乙醇的产量,降低原料成本。近20年来,由于技术的革命性进步,已使得纤维素乙醇的生产成本从4美元/加仑以上,降低至约1.2—1.5美元/加仑。其中,每吨生物质约44美元。因此,目前乙醇掺汽油具有十分强的市场竞争力。已有几个公司正在建造首批商业纤维素乙醇工厂,虽然这些刚起步的小型设施在合理利用和管理上风险较小,但规模经济需要较大型工厂。尽管配送生物质原料的成本会随需求的增加而增加,但在乙醇生产基础上的生物精炼技术的发展,尤其是化工产品和动力的协同生产,将会使全过程的经济可行性大大提高。进一步深入的基础研究,将解决低成本下实现纤维素的完全利用,以确保在无政策性补贴的前提下,真正使纤维素乙醇成为具有市场竞争力的低成本纯液体燃料。

Single-phase multiferroic materials are usually.considered useless because of the weak magnetoelectric effects,low operating temperature,and small electric polarization induced by.magnetic *** a result,current studies on applications of the magnetoelectric effects are mainly.focusing on multiferroic heterostructures and *** we report a room-temperature giant effect in response to external magnetic fields in single-phase multiferroics.A low magnetic field of 1000 Oe applied on the spin-driven multiferroic hexaferrites BaSrCo_(2) Fe_(11)AlO_(22) and Ba_(0.9)Sr_(1.1)Co_(2) Fe_(11)AlO_(22)is able to cause a huge change in the linear magnetoelectric coefficient(α_(e)=de/dH) by.several orders,leading to a giant magnetotranstance(GMT) effect at room *** GMT effect is comparable to the well-known giant magnetoresistance(GMR) effect in magnetic multilay.rs,and thus opens up a door toward practical applications for single-phase multiferroics.
