Ev.luating Reflected GPS Signal as a Potential Tool for Cotton Irrigation Scheduling

Accurate soil moisture content measurements are v.tal to precision irrigation management. Remote sensing using the microwav. spectrum (such as GPS signals) has been used for measuring large area soil moisture contents. In our prev.ous work, we estimated surface soil moisture contents for bare soil using a GPS Delay Mapping Receiv.r (DMR) dev.loped by NASA. Howev.r, the effect of v.getation was not considered in these studies. Hence the objectiv.s of this study were to: 1) inv.stigate the feasibility of using DMR to determine soil moisture content in cotton production fields;2) ev.luate the attenuation effect of v.getation (cotton) on reflected GPS signal. Field experiments were conducted during the 2013 and 2014 growing seasons in South Carolina. GPS antennas were mounted at three heights (1.6, 2.7, and 4.2 m) ov.r cotton fields to measure reflected GPS signals (DMR readings). DMR readings, soil core samples, and plant measurements were collected about once a week and attenuation effect of plant canopy was calculated. Results showed that DMR was able to detect soil moisture changes within one week after precipitation ev.nts that were larger than 25 mm per day. Howev.r, the DMR readings were poorly correlated with soil v.lumetric water content during dry periods. Attenuation effect of plant canopy was not significant. For irrigation purpose, the results suggested that the sensitiv.ty of reflected GPS signals to soil moisture changes needed to be further studied before this technology could be utilized for irrigation scheduling in cotton production. Refinement of this technology will expand the use of adv.nced remote sensing technology for site-specific and timely irrigation scheduling. This would eliminate the need to install moisture sensors in production fields, which can interfere with farming operations and increase production costs.

Many agricultural fields across the country hav. a high degree of v.riability in soil type and water holding capacity that affects irrigation management. One way to ov.rcome problems associated with the field v.riability for improv.ng irrigation management is to utilize a site-specific irrigation system. This system applies water to match the needs of indiv.dual management zones within a field. A real-time continuous soil moisture measurement is essential for the success of site-specific irrigation systems. Recently the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) dev.loped sensor technology that records the global positioning system (GPS) signal reflected from the surface of Earth, which estimates the dielectric properties of soil and can be used to estimate soil moisture contents. The ov.rall objectiv. of this study was to determine the feasibility of utilizing GPS-based technology dev.loped by NASA for soil moisture measurements and to determine the influence of soil type, soil compaction, and ground cov.r on the measurements. The results showed strong positiv. correlations between soil moisture and reflected signals. Other factors (soil compaction and soil type), were not significantly related to reflectiv.ty and did not significantly change the relationship between reflectiv.ty and soil moisture contents. In addition, ground cov.r (rye crop) did not significantly reduce reflectiv.ty. Therefore, this system could be used as a real-time and continuous nonintrusiv. soil moisture sensor for site-specific irrigation scheduling and watershed management.

In a reliability-based design optimization (RBDO), computation of the failure probability (Pf) at all design points through the process may suitably be av.ided at the early stages. Thus, to reduce extensiv. computations of RBDO, one could decouple the optimization and reliability analysis. The present work proposes a new methodology for such a decoupled approach that separates optimization and reliability analysis into two procedures which significantly improv. the computational efficiency of the RBDO. This technique is based on the probabilistic sensitiv.ty approach (PSA) on the shifted probability density function. Stochastic v.riables are separated into two groups of desired and non-desired v.riables. The three-phase procedure may be summarized as: Phase 1, apply deterministic design optimization based on mean v.lues of random v.riables;Phase 2, mov. designs toward a reliable space using PSA and finding a primary reliable optimum point;Phase 3, applying an intelligent self-adaptiv. procedure based on cubic B-spline interpolation functions until the targeted failure probability is reached. An improv.d response surface method is used for computation of failure probability. The proposed RBDO approach could significantly reduce the number of analyses required to less than 10% of conv.ntional methods. The computational efficacy of this approach is demonstrated by solv.ng four benchmark truss design problems published in the structural optimization literature.

We inv.stigated the role of the main olfactory and accessory olfactory systems （MOS and AOS respectiv.ly） in the detection of androstenone. We used the following experimental approaches： behav.oral, surgical remov.l of the v.meronasal organ （v.X） followed by histochemical v.rification and Fos immunohistochemistry. Using a Y-maze paradigm we estimated sensitiv.ty of NZB/B1NJ and CBA/J mice to androstenone. CBA mice were 2,000-fold more sensitiv. to androstenone than NZB mice. v.X caused a 4-tol6-fold decrease in sensitiv.ty to androstenone in highly-sensitiv. CBA mice, but did not affect thresholds in NZB mice. Results indicate the inv.lv.ment of the MOS and AOS in the detection of androstenone. We observ.d a specific pattern of Fos-positiv. cells in the main olfactory bulb of CBA mice but not in NZB mice subsequent to exposure of mice to androstenone; the compound activ.ted cells in the accessory olfactory bulb in both strains of mice, indicating the inv.lv.ment of the v.meronasal organ. Patterns of Fos-positiv. cells in the v.meronasal organ were recorded subsequent to exposure to androstenone. Fos-positiv. receptor cells in the v.meronasal organ of CBA and NZB mice were different, in CBA mice Fos-positiv. cells were noted in both the basal and apical zones, howev.r, in NZB mice activ.tion was observ.d only in the apical zone [Current Zoology 56 （6）： 813-818, 2010].

Patent documents are unique external sources of information that rev.al the core technology underlying new inv.ntions. Patents also serv. as a strategic data source that can be mined to discov.r state-of-the-art technical dev.lopment and subsequently help guide R＆D inv.stments. This research incorporates an ontology schema to extract and represent patent concepts. A clustering algorithm with non-exhaustiv. ov.rlaps is proposed to ov.rcome deficiencies with exhaustiv. clustering methods used in patent mining and technology discov.ry. The non-exhaustiv. clustering approach allows for the clustering of patent documents with ov.rlapping technical findings and claims, a feature that enables the grouping of patents that define related key innov.tions. Legal adv.sors can use this approach to study potential cases of patent infringement or dev.se strategies to av.id litigation. The case study demonstrates the use of non-exhaustiv. ov.rlaps algorithm by clustering US and Japan radio frequency identification （RFID） patents and by analyzing the legal implications of automated discov.ry of patent infringement.

The outage of a transformer in a power generation system will generally result in a shutdown of the entire system. Consequentially, large amounts of rev.nue are lost to the plant owner with a substantial negativ. impact on the civ.l community and industrial customers. This paper analyzes the current maintenance practices （i.e., an as-is process model） of a transformer manufacturing company, which prov.des maintenance serv.ces to power generation plants and reports the major weaknesses in current business practices. The maintenance weaknesses include isolated processes and paper based information communication. These inefficient processes result in serv.ce delays, cost increases, and inappropriate responses to customers＇ specific requests and complaints. To improv. the efficiency and flexibility of the entire transformer maintenance serv.ce system, an e-integration approach is implemented with three key tasks. First, the current business processes are re-engineered to prov.de an improv.d （to-be） business model. Then, we replace paper based documentation methods with an electronic filing system for efficient and cost-effectiv. information exchange. Afterward, the improv.d process model is implemented as an Internet based system to enhance the interactions among the transformer manufacturer, end-users, and serv.ce contractors for customized maintenance serv.ces. The case study demonstrates that implementing the e-integration approach increases the efficiency and effectiv.ness of the customized maintenance serv.ces.

Engineering and research teams often dev.lop new products and technologies by referring to inv.ntions described in patent databases. Efficient patent analysis builds R＆D knowledge, reduces new product dev.lopment time, increases market success, and reduces potential patent infringement. Thus, it is beneficial to automatically and systematically extract information from patent documents in order to improv. knowledge sharing and collaboration among R＆D team members. In this research, patents are summarized using a combined ontology based and TF-IDF concept clustering approach. The ontology captures the general knowledge and core meaning of patents in a giv.n domain. Then, the proposed methodology extracts, clusters, and integrates the content of a patent to deriv. a summary and a cluster tree diagram of key terms. Patents from the International Patent Classification （IPC） codes B25C, B25D, B25F （categories for power hand tools） and B24B, C09G and H011 （categories for chemical mechanical polishing） are used as case studies to ev.luate the compression ratio, retention ratio, and classification accuracy of the summarization results. The ev.luation uses statistics to represent the summary generation and its compression ratio, the ontology based keyword extraction retention ratio, and the summary classification accuracy. The results show that the ontology based approach yields about the same compression ratio as prev.ous non-ontology based research but yields on av.rage an 11% improv.ment for the retention ratio and a 14% improv.ment for classification accuracy.

A global enterprise must continuously improv. the efficiency of logistic operations between supply chain collaborators. Integrating logistic serv.ces, resources, and necessary information flows in the supply chain to ensure efficiency and efficacy is critically important to these companies. Global logistic serv.ce companies face challenges from their clients to prov.de logistic serv.ces that are cost effectiv., accurate, and seamlessly integrate material, information and cash flows. In this research, an improv.d framework for one-stop logistic serv.ces is systematically designed, analyzed, and ev.luated. The one-stop logistic serv.ce framework, defmed in four models, is dev.loped to prov.de enterprises with integrated and comprehensiv. serv.ces within the global supply chain context. The lev.ls of serv.ce importance are assessed using a four categories questionnaire. This research prov.des a case study of the implementation of one-stop logistic serv.ces in the distribution industry and demonstrates the framework operating under different demand conditions. Finally, system dynamics causal ev.luation is used to ev.luate the adv.ntages of the logistic serv.ce framework.
