Numerical modelling of reinforced concrete flexural members strengthened using textile reinforced mortars

Externally bonded(EB)and near-surface mounted(NsM)bonding are two widely adopted and researched strengthening methods for reinforced-concrete *** composite substrates are easy to reach and repair using appropriate surface treatments,whereas NsM techniques can be easily applied to the soffit and concrete member *** EB bonded fiber-reinforced polymer(FRP)technique has a significant drawback:combustibility,which calls for external protective agents,and textile reinforced mortar(TRM),a class of EB composites that is noncombustible and provides a similar functionality to any EB FRP-strengthened *** study employs a finite element analysis technique to investigate the failing failure of carbon textile reinforced mortar(CTRM)-strengthened reinforced concrete *** principal objective of this numerical study was to develop a finite element model and validate a set of experimental data in existing literature.A set of seven beams was modelled and calibrated to obtain concrete damage plasticity(CDP)*** predicted results,which were in the form of load versus deflection,load versus rebar strain,tensile damage,and compressive damage patterns,were in good agreement with the experimental ***,a parametric study was conducted to verify the applicability of the numerical model and study various influencing factors such as the concrete strength,internal reinforcement,textile roving spacing,and externally-applied load *** ultimate load and deflection of the predicted finite element results had a coefficient of variation(COV)of 6.02%and 5.7%,respectively.A strain-based numerical comparison with known methods was then conducted to investigate the debonding *** developed finite element model can be applied and tailored further to explore similar TRM-strengthened beams undergoing debonding,and the preventive measures can be sought to avoid premature debonding.

Discrete element modelling of strength and critical state characteristics of granular materials under axial compression and axial extension stress path tests

The critical state soil mechanics(CssM)framework has been widely used across a range of problems in geomechanics involving complex loading ***,the uniqueness of the critical state has been disputed for many years and it remains a controversial *** by previous investigations,a series of discrete element method(DEM)simulations were performed under both axial compression(AC)and axial extension(AE)stress *** samples were isotropically compressed at varying mean normal effective stresses(confining pressures)and sheared to a large axial strain of approximately 60%.It is found that there exist unique values of critical void ratios and stress ratios under critical state,which are independent of the samples’initial packings but dependent on stress *** the critical strength(stress ratio)for the AC stress path tests is higher than that for the AE stress *** critical state lines(CsLs)are found to path-dependent but unique for each stress path.A unique linear relationship between the critical coordination numbers and critical void ratios is identified under the AC and AE stress paths respectively,but such a relationship depends on the stress *** is also found that there exist unique values of microscopic parameters in terms of deviator fabric under critical state,which are independent of the samples’initial packings but dependent on stress *** these simulation results lead to the conclusion of non-uniqueness of CsLs from both macroscopic and microscopic viewpoints.

Investigations of the effects of particle morphology on granular material behaviors using a multi-sphere approach

This article studies the influences of particle morphology on the behaviors of granular materials at both macroscopic and microscopic levels based on the discrete element method(DEM).A set of numerical tests under drained triaxial compression was performed by controlling two morphological descriptors,*** of the smallest to the largest pebble diameter,x,and the maximum pebbleepebble intersection angle,*** descriptors are vital in generating particle geometry and surface *** was found that the stress responses of all assemblies exhibited similar behavior and showed post-peak *** normalized stress ratio and volumetric strains flatten off and tended to reach a steady value after an axial strain of 40%.While the friction angles at peak state varied with different morphological descriptors,the friction angles at critical state showed no significant ***,evolution of the average coordination numbers showed a dramatic exponential decay until an axial strain of about 15%after which it stabilized and was unaffected by further increase of axial *** addition,stress ratio q/p and strong fabric parameter fs d=fs m were found to follow an approximately linear relationship for each *** findings emphasized the significance of the influences of particle morphology on the macroscopic and microscopic responses of granular materials.

In the last two decades,developments in the area of biomineralization has yielded promising results making it a potentially environmentally friendly technique for a wide range of applications in engineering and wastewater/heavy metal *** Induced Carbonate Precipitation(MICP)has led to numerous patented applications ranging from novel strains and nutrient sources for the precipitation of *** are being constantly published to optimize the process to become a promising,cost effective,ecofriendly approach when compared with the existing traditional remediation technologies which are implemented to solve multiple contamination/pollution *** metal pollution still poses a major threat towards compromising the *** removal of heavy metals is of high importance due to their recalcitrance and persistence in the *** that perspective,this paper reviews the current and most significant discoveries and applications of MICP towards the conversion of heavy metals into heavy metal carbonates and removal of calcium from contaminated media such as polluted *** is evident from the literature survey that although heavy metal carbonate research is very effective in removal,is still in its early stages but could serve as a solution if the microorganisms are stimulated directly in the heavy metal environment.

This paper verifies the accuracy of a methodology recently proposed on reinforced concrete beam tested in flexure available from literature. This was implemented using the general purpose FEA software Abaqus. A very good agreement between numerical and experimental study was obtained. The compression failure, tension failure matched with experimental findings which shows the applicability of the methodology.

Governance in the exploration of global and regional determinants of ICT development

The present study assesses how governance affects information and communication technology(IcT)at the global level contingent on macroeconomic policy factors such as trade,foreign direct investment(FDI),manufacturing value added,and agricultural value *** study focuses on 183 countries from 2003 to 2021,and the empirical evidence is based on the generalized method of moments(GMM).The following main findings are *** the full sample,governance unconditionally promotes ICT development,while trade openness(industrial added value)moderates governance to promote(dampen)ICT *** sub-saharan Africa,only trade openness effectively moderates governance to induce an overall positive effect on ICT,while in the Middle East and North Africa(MENA)region,all policy variables moderate governance for an overall positive incidence on ICT sector *** findings for the MENA region are confirmed in the Europe and Central Asia(ECA)region,with the exception of the moderating role of industrial added value,which engenders an overall negative *** the East and south Asia and the Pacific(EsAP)countries,one overall positive incidence is apparent in the role of trade openness,while net negative effects are established from the moderating roles of industrial added value and agricultural added *** the American sub-sample,a positive(negative)net effect is apparent from the role of industrial added value(trade)in moderating the incidence of gover-nance on ICT sector ***,policy implications are discussed.

The interview was conducted on March 2nd, 2023 by Ioannis solos and charles Buck. William Morris has sustained practice since 1980. He has served on the California, Texas and Massachusetts Professional Associations, as well as the National Association. He has tendered 20 years of service to the field through academic medicine, earning a master’s degree in medical education to assist in developing Chinese medical doctoral programs and institutional review boards. He earned an OM.D. in 1988, a DAOM in 2002, and a Ph.D. focused on pulse diagnosis as clinical epistemology in 2009. He has published five books, including TCM Case studies Dermatology, Li shi-zhen Pulse studies: An Illustrated Guide, Neoclassical Pulse Diagnosis, Cycles in Medical Astrology, and Transformation: Treating Trauma with Acupuncture and Herbs.

The interview was conducted on November 20th,2022 by Ioannis solos and charles *** kaptchuk(泰开阳)is a Professor of Medicine and a Professor of Global Health&social Medicine at Harvard Medical *** 1975,he graduated from the Macao Institute of Chinese Medicine,Macao,*** returning to the West,Ted taught Chinese medicine throughout the states,Europe,Latin America,and ***’s book,The Web that Has No Weaver:Understanding Chinese Medicine is a groundbreaking explanation of East Asian medicine that continues to shape the discourse of the Chinese medicine profession in the West and has been translated into 13 *** 1990,Ted was recruited in Harvard Medical school to help research Chinese *** encountering high placebo responses in multiple acupuncture clinical trials,Ted decided to switch his career to primarily studying *** has published over 300 peer-reviewed *** has been awarded the Lifetime Achievement Award from the society of Acupuncture Research(2015),the Lifetime Achievement Award from the society for Interdisciplinary Placebo studies(2021),and the William silen Lifetime Achievement Award in Mentoring from Harvard Medical school(2022).
