We report amphibian and reptile distribution records based on recent biodiversity surveys conducted at the Angat Watershed Reservation, Bulacan Province, Luzon Island, Philippines. This watershed constitutes the principal water source for Manila, the Philippines＇ largest metropolitan area. As virtually nothing is known of the herpetological diversity of the immediate area and the surrounding Bulacan Province, all species recorded as part of our surveys constitute major geographical records and/or significant range extensions. Our data result in a total of 63 new records of amphibian （19 frogs） and reptile （22 lizards, 2 turtles, and 20 snakes） species for this protected area （and immediate vicinity） that serves as a watershed for the major metropolitan area of Manila and surrounding cities. Together with the few previous literature records, our new records bring the total number of amphibian and reptile species for Bulacan Province to 68. We discuss several strategies for future survey work （focusing on habitat type, seasonal variation, and elevational variability） that we anticipate will result in increased knowledge of diversity within the Angat Watershed Reserve. The impressive level of herpetological diversity within such a small area, so close to Metro Manila, emphasizes that the diversity and distribution patterns of amphibians and reptiles from Luzon are still poorly known and in need of further study.

Incorporation of Biochar carbon into Stable Soil Aggregates:The Role of clay Mineralogy and Other Soil characteristics

Aggregation and structure play key roles in water-holding capacity and stability of *** this study,the incorporation of carbon(c) from switchgrass biochar into stable aggregate size fractions was assessed in an Aridisol(from colorado,USA) dominated by 2:1 clays and an Alfisol(from Virginia,USA) containing weathered mixed 1:1 and 2:1 mineralogy,to evaluate the effect of biochar addition on soil *** biochar was applied at 4 levels,0,25,50,and 100 g kg^(-1),to the soils grown with wheat in a growth chamber *** changes in soil strength and water-holding capacity using water release curves were *** the colorado soil,the proportion of soil occurring in large aggregates decreased,with concomitant increases in small size *** changes in aggregate size fractions occurred in the Virginia *** the colorado soil,c content increased from 3.3 to 16.8 g kg^(-1),whereas in thection c content increased from 5.7 to 22.6 g kg^(-1) with 100 g kg^(-1)biochar *** the Virginia soil,c content within aggregate size fractions increased for each size fraction,except the>2 000 μm *** greatest increase(from 6.2 to 22.0 g kg^(-1)) occurred in the 53–250 μm *** results indicated that c was incorporated into larger aggregates in the Virginia soil,but remained largely unassociated to soil particles in the colorado *** addition had no significant effect on water-holding capacity or strength *** biochar to more weathered soils with high native soil organic content may result in greater stabilization of incorporated c and result in less loss because of erosion and transport,compared with the soils dominated by 2:1 clays and low native soil organic content.

Switchgrass Biochar Effects on Plant Biomass and Microbial Dynamics in Two Soils from Different Regions

Biochar amendments to soils may alter soil function and fertility in various ways, including through induced changes in the microbial community. We assessed microbial activity and community composition of two distinct clayey soil types, an Aridisol from colorado （cO） in the U.S. central Great Plains, and an Alfisol from Virginia （VA） in the southeastern USA following the application of switchgrass （Panicum virgatum） biochar. The switchgrass biochar was applied at four levels, 0%,0, 2.5%, 5%, and 10%, approximately equivalent to biochar additions of 0, 25, 50, and 100 t ha^-1, respectively, to the soils grown with wheat （Triticum aestivum） in an eight-week growth chamber experiment. We measured wheat shoot biomass and nitrogen （N） content and soil nutrient availability and N mineralization rates, and characterized the microbial fatty acid methyl ester （FAME） profiles of the soils. Net N mineralization rates decreased in both soils in proportion to an increase in biochar levels, but the effect was more marked in the VA soil, where net N mineralization decreased from -2.1 to -38.4 mg kg^-1. The 10% biochar addition increased soil pH, electrical conductivity, Mehlich- and bicarbonate-extractable phosphorus （P）, and extractable potassium （K） in both soil types. The wheat shoot biomass decreased from 17.7 to 9.1 g with incremental additions of biochar in the cO soil, but no difference was noted in plants grown in the VA soil. The FAME recovery assay indicated that the switchgrass biochar addition could introduce artifacts in analysis, so the results needed to be interpreted with caution. Non-corrected total FAME concentrations indicated a decline by 457o and 34% with 10% biochar addition in the cO and VA soils, respectively, though these differences became nonsignificant when the extraction efficiency correction factor was applied. Teaching New Mothers about Infant Feeding cues May Increase Breastfeeding Duration

The objective of this pilot study was to compare two different methods of educating prenatal women regarding breast-feeding. comparisons were made between traditional and innovative methods to determine which was more effective in increasing breastfeeding duration. Over a 32 month period, 197 prenatal women were assigned to either a control (c, n = 139) or an experimental (E, n = 51) group. The c group received standard breastfeeding education, while the E group received standard education in addition to information about infant hunger cues. cox Regression and Kap-lan- Meier analysis were performed. Estimated mean number of weeks for c and E groups to continue breastfeeding was 14.3 + 17.4 weeks and 18.5 + 17.1 weeks, respectively. At 26 weeks, duration of breastfeeding approached significance (chi square = 2.907, df = 1, p = 0.088), indicating probability of continuing to breastfeed was about 28% better for those in E group when compared to c group. Duration of breastfeeding may increase when prenatal women are taught to identify infant behavior such as hunger cues.

Biofilm formation is an important virulence factor of Staphylococcus epidermidis. However, little is known about the mechanisms of staphylococcal biofilm dispersal. In the present study, we investigated biofilm dispersal of the model biofilm-forming strain S. epidermidis RP62A under oligotrophic stress conditions. We found that oligotrophic stress led to rapid dispersal of pre-formed biofilms and concomitant changes in the composition of the extracellular matrix, including a decrease in poly-N-acetylglucosamine polysaccharide and an increase in proteins. Our results suggest that modifications in biofilm integrity caused by compositional changes in the biofilm matrix can induce biofilm dispersal.

Marine algae have been used as food since ancient times and today are consumed as a regular part of the diet. In this study, we hypothesized that H. grandifolius phlorotannins-enriched extract exerts cytotoxic selective effects against tumor cell lines promoting cell death trough apoptosis mechanisms. The aim of the present study is to characterize chemically and investigate the selective cytotoxic effect of the H. grandifolius extract on epithelial tumour cell lines (A375, A549, Hep-2, HeLa) compared to non-malignant cell line (Hek-293), and evaluate possible molecular mechanisms involved in the programmed cell death pathway. High-resolution directly-infusion mass spectrometry (HR-DIMS) analysis with electrospray ionization (ESI) was performed in positive and negative mode. cytotoxicity was evaluated through colorimetric assay and morphological alterations were observed in giemsa stained cells after extract treatment. Apoptosis was further evaluated by annexin V staining. Spectra showed peaks m/z between 370 and 430 and molecular formula was defined upon isotopic ratio. Extract showed selectivity to the non-tumor line with enhanced cytotoxicity in tumor cells according to the concentration and exposure time. After 72 h treatment, the HeLa strain was more susceptible to the extract, followed by lines Hep2, A375 and A549. Morphological changes by giemsa were observed after increased doses of extracts and staining for annexin V showed majority of tumor cells at early stages of the apoptotic process. Here, selective anti-tumor activity of extract taken from the alga H. grandifolius was able to suppress proliferation and promote apoptosis-mediated cell death with induction of initial stages of apoptosis in different cell lines.

In this study,we monitored for the impact of three aqueous extracts of plants(Azadirachta indica,Hyptis suaveolens and Solanum lycopersicum)on insect pests abundance in okra(Abelmoschus esculentus L.)crop,compared to a synthetic chemical«SAUVEUR 62 Ec»,having as active ingredients,acetamiprid 32g/l and Lambda-cyhalothrin 30g/*** applications by these extracts were done using manual *** treatment,the insects were caught using two methods(pitfall traps and colored bowls traps).A total of 6505 insects belonging to nine orders were recorded in four *** plot 1(9 orders)was the most diverse,followed by the plot 3(8 orders),the plot 2 and 4(7 orders respectively).coleoptera,Lepidoptera,Diptera,Orthoptera and Hemiptera were the most *** chemical treatment has impacted significantly the number of orders(pct abundance was impacted significantly by the different biological treatments(pct of Solanum lycopercicum was more effective on the abundance of pests belonging to Hemiptera,while the aqueous extracts of Azadirachta indica and Hyptis suaveolens were effectives on the abundance of pests belonging to *** chemical treatment was effective on the pests belonging to both orders.
