Promotion of structural plasticity in area V2 of visual cortex prevents against object recognition memory deficits in aging and Alzheimer's disease rodents

Memory deficit,which is often associated with aging and many psychiatric,neurological,and neurodegenerative diseases,has been a challenging issue for *** till now,all potential drug candidates have failed to produce satisfa ctory ***,in the search for a solution,we found that a treatment with the gene corresponding to the RGS14414protein in visual area V2,a brain area connected with brain circuits of the ventral stream and the medial temporal lobe,which is crucial for object recognition memory(ORM),can induce enhancement of *** this study,we demonstrated that the same treatment with RGS14414in visual area V2,which is relatively unaffected in neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer s disease,produced longlasting enhancement of ORM in young animals and prevent ORM deficits in rodent models of aging and Alzheimer’s ***,we found that the prevention of memory deficits was mediated through the upregulation of neuronal arbo rization and spine density,as well as an increase in brain-derived neurotrophic factor(BDNF).A knockdown of BDNF gene in RGS14414-treated aging rats and Alzheimer s disease model mice caused complete loss in the upregulation of neuronal structural plasticity and in the prevention of ORM *** findings suggest that BDNF-mediated neuronal structural plasticity in area V2 is crucial in the prevention of memory deficits in RGS14414-treated rodent models of aging and Alzheimer’s ***,our findings of RGS14414gene-mediated activation of neuronal circuits in visual area V2 have therapeutic relevance in the treatment of memory deficits.

Effect of nano-graphite on mechanical properties and oxidation resistance of ZrB_(2)-SiC-graphite electrode ceramics

ZrB_(2)-based ceramic composites were prepared by spark plasma sintering using ZrB_(2) powder prepared by molten salt method as raw material and SiC and nano-graphite as *** effects of nano-graphite addition on the physical properties and oxidation resistance of ZrB_(2)-based ceramic samples were *** results show that the addition of an appropriate amount of nano-graphite can effectively improve the density of ZrB_(2)-based ceramic composites and improve the physical properties of the *** flexural strength of the ceramic sample with 8 vol.%nano-graphite reached 418.54 MPa,which was 53.14% higher than that of ZrB_(2)-SiC ceramic material(273.31 MPa),and its oxidation resistance was also significantly *** demonstrats that the addition of an appropriate amount of nano-graphite can effectively improve the physical properties and oxidation resistance of ZrB_(2)-SiC ceramic *** prolonging its service life in application and promoting the development of ZrB_(2)-based ceramic composites,it is of great significance for clean steel smelting.

Abnormal mechanochemical effect in ultraprecision machining of an additively manufactured precipitation-strengthened high-entropy alloy

Recently,researchers have explored the use of precipitation strengthening and finer microstructures with high-density dislocations in additive manufacturing to produce high-entropy alloys(HEAs)with adjustable ***,the inherent surface roughness and lack of machinability research in AMed HEAs limit their engineering *** this study,we systematically investigated the microstructural characteristics,mechanical properties,and machinability of Fe_(29.3)Co_(28.7)Ni_(28.6)Al_(6.8)Ti_(6.6)(at.%)HEAs with three different structures:single FCC phase cel.ular(SPC),dual precipitation-strengthened(DPS),and single precipitation-strengthened(SPS).These structures were fabricated by selective laser melting and isothermally annealing at 780 and 940℃.Compared to SPC HEA,DPS HEA exhibits a significant increase in yield strength and ultimate tensile strength but with a dramatic sacrifice in *** HEA exhibits similar mechanical properties to SPC HEA due to the pronounced coarsening of l21 *** ultraprecision machining micro-cutting test showed that SPC HEA had a significant mechanochem-ical effect,as evidenced by a sharp drop in cutting force for inked workpieces,but not DPS *** abnormal finding was that the negligible reflection of cutting force for SPS HEAs suggested a negative mechanochemical effect,even though SPS HEA had equally excellent plasticity like SPC *** was found that nanocrystallization-induced strength enhancement and ductility reduction of SPS HEA lead to chips’deformation dominated by shear avalanche rather than chip folding of SPC HEA,which involves the reduction of surface energy and friction of chips’***,these results and our research findings may guide the machining of AMed precipitation-strengthened HEAs and accelerate their engineering ap-plication.

Effect of electrical parameters and slag system on macrostructure of electroslag ingot

To investigate the influence of electric parameters and slag system on the solidification quality of electroslag ingot during electroslag remelting,different power supply modes,current strengths and remelting slag systems were used to conduct electroslag remelting experiments on 304l austenitic stainless steel,and the macrostructure of electroslag ingots was *** results indicate that the depth of the metal pool decreases with the reduction of remelting frequency in the low frequency power supply *** effects of different power supply modes,such as low-frequency,direct current straight polarity(DCSP),and direct current reverse polarity(DCRP),on reducing the depth of the metal pool increase in that *** reducing the remelting current strength in the same power supply mode,the depth of metal pool is *** compared to the binary slag system of 70%CaF2+30%Al2O3,the ternary slag system of 60%CaF2+20%Al2O3+20%CaO is more effective in reducing the depth of the metal pool during *** the 60%CaF2+20%Al2O3+20%CaO ternary slag system results in a shallower and flatter metal pool,with columnar crystal growth occurring closer to the axial *** effect is observed for both low frequency and direct current(DC)power supply modes.

Enhancing XRF sensor-based sorting of porphyritic copper ore using particle swarm optimization-support vector machine(PSO-SVM)algorithm

X-ray fluorescence(XRF)sensor-based ore sorting enables efficient beneficiation of heterogeneous ores,while intraparticle heterogeneity can cause significant grade detection errors,leading to misclassifications and hindering widespread technology *** classification models are crucial to determine if actual grade exceeds the sorting threshold using localized XRF *** studies mainly used linear regression(lR)algorithms including simple linear regression(SlR),multivariable linear regression(MlR),and multivariable linear regression with interaction(MlRI)but often fell short attaining satisfactory *** study employed the particle swarm optimization support vector machine(PSO-SVM)algorithm for sorting porphyritic copper ore ***-scale results showed PSO-SVM out-performed lR and raw data(RD)models and the significant interaction effects among input features was *** poor input data quality,PSO-SVM demonstrated exceptional ***-scale sorting achieved 93.0%accuracy,0.24%grade increase,84.94%recovery rate,57.02%discard rate,and a remarkable 39.62 yuan/t net smelter return(NSR)increase compared to no *** improvements were achieved by the PSO-SVM model with optimized input combinations and highest data quality(T=10,T is XRF testing times).The unsuitability of lR methods for XRF sensor-based sorting of investigated sample is *** element selection and mineral association analysis elucidate element importance and influence mechanisms.

Biomimetic MXene membranes with negatively thermo-responsive switchable 2D nanochannels for graded molecular sieving

Negatively thermo-responsive 2D membranes,which mimic the stomatal opening/closing of plants,have drawn substantial interest for tunable molecular separation ***,these membranes are still restricted significantly on account of low water permeability and poor dynamic tunability of 2D nanochannels under temperature ***,we present a biomimetic negatively thermo-responsive MXene membrane by covalently grafting poly(N-isopropylacrylamide)(PNIPAm)onto MXene *** uniformly grafted PNIPAm polymer chains can enlarge the interlayer spacings for increasing water permeability while also allowing more tunability of 2D nanochannels for enhancing the capability of gradually separating multiple molecules of different *** expected,the constructed membrane exhibits ultrahigh water permeance of 95.6 l m^(-2) h^(-1) bar^(-1) at 25℃,which is eight-fold higher than the state-of-the-art negatively thermoresponsive 2D ***,the highly temperature-tunable 2D nanochannels enable the constructed membrane to perform excellent graded molecular sieving for dye-and antibiotic-based ternary *** strategy provides new perspectives in engineering smart 2D membrane and expands the scope of temperature-responsive membranes,showing promising applications in micro/nanofluidics and molecular separation.

Efficient electroreduction of nitrate via enriched active phases on copper-cobalt oxides

Electrochemical conversion of nitrate(NO_(3)~-) to ammonia(NH_(3)) can target two birds with one stone well, in NO_(3)^(-)-containing sewage remediation and sustainable NH_(3) production. However, single metalbased catalysts are difficult to drive high-efficient NO_(3)~- removal due to the multi-electron transfer ***, we present a tandem catalyst with simple structure, Cu-Co binary metal oxides(Cu-Co-O), by engineering intermediate phases as catalytic active species for NO_(3)~- conversion. Electrochemical evaluation,X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and in situ Raman spectra together suggest that the newly-generated Cu-based phases was prone to NO_(3)~- to NO_(2)~- conversion, then NO_(2)~- was reduced to NH_(3) on Co-based species. At an applied potential of -1.1 V vs. saturated calomel electrode, the Cu-Co-O catalyst achieved NO_(3)~- -N removal of 90% and NH_(3) faradaic efficiency of 81% for 120 min in 100 m l of 50 mg/l NO_(3)~- -N,consuming only 0.69 k Wh/mol in a two-electrode system. This study provides a facile and efficient engineering strategy for developing high-performance catalysts for electrocatalytic nitrate conversion.

Roles of host proteases in the entry of SARS-CoV-2

The spike protein(S)of SARS-CoV-2 is responsible for viral attachment and entry,thus a major factor for host suscep-tibility,tissue tropism,virulence and *** S is divided with S1 and S2 region,and the S1 contains the receptor-binding domain(RBD),while the S2 contains the hydrophobic fusion domain for the entry into the host *** host proteases have been implicated in the activation of SARS-CoV-2 S through various c leavage *** this article,we review host proteases including furin,trypsin,transmembrane protease serine 2(TMPRSS2)and cathepsins in the activation of SARS-CoV-2 *** betacoronaviruses including SARS-CoV-2 have polybasic residues at the S1/S2 site which is subjected to the cleavage by *** S1/S2 cleavage facilitates more assessable RBD to the receptor ACE2,and the binding triggers further conformational changes and exposure of the S2'site to proteases such as type Il transmembrane serine proteases(TTPRs)including *** the presence of TMPRSS2 on the target cells,SARS-CoV-2 can utilize a direct entry route by fusion of the viral envelope to the cel.ular *** the absence of TMPRSS2,SARS-CoV-2 enter target cells via endosomes where multiple cathepsins cleave the S for the successful *** host proteases involved in the cleavage of the S were *** article also includes roles of 3C-like protease inhibitors which have inhibitory activity against cathepsin l in the entry of SARS-CoV-2,and discussed the dual roles of such inhibitors in virus replication.
