Seismic Performance of Dry-Friction Devices in Shear-Frame Buildings

In recent years the application of friction-based passive energy dissipation devices have been proven very effective in reducing structural response to earthquake excitations and also implemented for a large number of buildings. Their design heavily relies on numerical simulations to model the influence of the energy dissipation devices. The modeling of friction forces must be accurate for realistic simulation of the influence of these devices. In state-of-the-practice, the hysteretic behavior of friction devices has been typically modeled with Coulomb friction having a constant coefficient of friction. However, the basic laws for typical sliding materials and experimental investigations show non-linear relationship between friction and sliding velocity, which includes stiction and Stribeck effect. The influence of stiction and Stribeck effect may be significant and can not be ignored in simulating the dynamic responses of structures with friction-based energy dissipation devices. In this paper the optimal performance of dry friction device in shear-frame buildings when subjected to earthquake ground motions has been investigated. The focus of this paper is on the optimal minimization of response of the shear-frame building. Since buildings with friction devices behave in a highly nonlinear manner, nonlinear response-history analysis considering comprehensive sliding friction models has been carried out. The performance has also been evaluated using the various response measures： the maximum absolute acceleration, the maximum base shear, and the maximum inter-story drift. Different performance indices have been used to quantify the influence of the device properties.

Karyological and Electrophoretic Distinction between Sexes of <i>Trichosanthes bracteata</i>

Chromosome studies and soluble protein profiles, fractionated by reducing and non-reducing SDS-PAGE, were carried out in dioecious Trichosanthes bracteata. Somatic chromosome no. 2n = 22 was recorded in both sexes. The karyotype of male and female plant shows high homogeneity and the absence of any heteromorphic pair of chromosomes negates the possibility of XY mechanism. Soluble protein profiles from the tuberous roots of the male and female plants, fractionated by reducing SDS-PAGE, did not show any qualitative distinction. Whereas the protein profile in non-reducing SDS-PAGE reveals a clear distinction when compared on a single gel. The difference is marked by the presence of a disulphide linked tertiary or folded protein at 19 k D region detected in male sex. However, at the level of primary structure the qualitative expression is similar indicating a common ancestry.

Dual Based Procedures for Un-Capacitated Minimum Cost Flow Problem

In this article, we devise two dual based methods for obtaining very good solution to a single stage un-capacitated minimum cost flow problem. These methods are an improvement to the methods already developed by Sharma and Saxena [1]. We further develop a method to extract a very good primal solution from a given dual solution. We later demonstrate the efficacies and the significance of these methods on 150 random problems.

Efficient Heuristic Based Methods for Two-Stage Transshipment Problem

In this article, we propose efficient methods for solving two stage transshipment problems. Transshipment problem is the special case of Minimum cost flow problem in which arc capacities are infinite. We start by proposing a novel problem formulation for a two stage transshipment problem. Later, special structure of our problem formulation is utilized to devise two dual based heuristics solutions with computational complexity of O (n2), and O (n3) respectively. These methods are motivated by the methods developed by Sharma and Saxena [1], sinha and Sharma [2]. Our methods differ in the initialization and the subsequent variation of the dual variables associated with the transshipment nodes along the shortest path. Lastly, a method is proposed to extract a very good primal solution from the given dual solutions with a computational complexity of O (n2). Efficacy of these methods is demonstrated by our numerical analysis on 200 random problems.

Phenotypic plasticity in Bacillus cereus strains isolated from various Antarctic habitats

We studied five strains of psychrotolerant Bacillus cereus （B. cereus） isolated from Antarctic snow （BCsn）, ice （BCic）, lake water （BCwt）, sediment （BCsd）, and soil （BCsl） samples in terms of their growth, biochemical properties, and heat shock re- sponses. Analyses of growth kinetics at 4℃ showed that BCsn had the fastest generation time （16.1 h）, whereas BCWT had the slowest （30.8 h）. Strain BCsd formed the largest zone of lipid hydrolysis （18 mm） whereas BCsn formed the smallest zone （3 mm）.Only BCsd produced gelatinase. These physiological differences illustrate adaptations of B. cereus isolates to different niches. Strains BCsl and BCwr were resistant to all 12 of the antibiotics tested. Strains BCsn, BCio, and BCsd were resistant to cell wall synthesis inhibitors （penicillin and ampicillin） and susceptible to protein synthesis inhibitors （tetracycline and streptomycin）. A carbon-substrate utilization assay revealed that BCsn, BCic and BCwr could specifically utilize D-glucose-6-phosphate, salicin, and 2＇-deoxyadenosine, respectively, indicating a degree of metabolic diversity among these Antarctic B. cereus strains. An analy- sis of heat shock proteins （HSPs） produced in response to a 60℃ heat treatment revealed significant variations in the amounts of HSP33 （p = 0.01, df= 4）, HSP44 （p = 0.003, dr= 4）, and HSP60 （p = 0.04, df= 4） among the strains. This emphasizes the impor- tance of HSPs in bacterial taxonomy. These results show that there are considerable adaptive variations among B. cereus strains from extremophilie environments. This could be significant in evaluating the taxonomy and evolution of this species.

Detection and analysis of the effects of heat stress on EEG using wavelet transform ——EEG analysis under heat stress

Continuous wavelet transform (CWT) method has been applied to capture localized time-frequency information of rat electroencephalogram (EEG) in different vigilance states and analyze alterations in transients during awake, slow wave sleep (SWS), and rapid eye movement (REM) sleep stages due to exposure to high environmental heat. Rats were divided in three group (i) acute heat stress-subjected to a single exposure for four hours in the Biological Oxygen Demand (BOD) incubator at 38?C;(ii) chronic heat stress-exposed for 21 days daily for one hour in the incubator at 38?C, and (iii) handling control groups. After two hours long EEG recordings from young healthy rats, EEG data representing three sleep states was visually selected and further subdivided into 2 seconds long epoch. Powers of wavelet spectra corresponding to delta, theta, alpha, and beta bands at all scales and locations were computed and variation in their states investigated. The wavelet analysis of EEG signals following exposure to high environmental heat revealed that powers of subband frequencies vary with time unlike Fourier technique. Changes in higher frequency components (beta) were significant in all sleep-wake states following both acute and chronic heat stress conditions. Percentage power of different components of the four bands was always found to be varying at different intervals of time in the same signal of analysis.

Predicting heat-stressed EEG spectra by self-organising feature map and learning vector quantizers——SOFM and LVQ based stress prediction

Self-Organising Feature Map (SOFM) along with learning vector quantizers (LVQ) have been designed to identify the alterations in brain electrical potentials due to exposure to high environmental heat in rats. Three groups of rats were considered—acute heat stressed, chronic heat stressed and control groups. After long EEG recordings following heat exposure, EEG data representing three different vigilance states such as slow wave sleep (SWS), rapid eye movement (REM) sleep and AWAKE were visually selected and further subdivided into 2 seconds long epoch. In order to evaluate the performance of artificial neural network (ANN) in recognizing chronic and acute effects of heat stress with respect to the control subjects, unsupervised learning algorithm was applied on EEG data. Mean performance of SOFM with quadratic taper function was found to be better (chronic-92.6%, acute-93.2%) over the other two tapers. The effect of LVQ after the initial SOFM training seems explicit giving rise to considerable improvements in performance in terms of selectivity and sensitivity. The percentage increase in selectivity with uniform taper function is maximum for chronic and its control group (4.01%) and minimum for acute group (1.29%) whereas, with Gaussian it is almost identical (chronic-2.57%, acute-2.03%, control- 2.33%). Quadratic taper function gives rise to an increase of 2.41% for chronic, 1.96% for acute and 2.91% for control patterns.

Computationally Efficient Problem Reformulations for Capacitated Lot Sizing Problem

In this article, we propose novel reformulations for capacitated lot sizing problem. These reformulations are the result of reducing the number of variables (by eliminating the backorder variable) or increasing the number of constraints (time capacity constraints) in the standard problem formulation. These reformulations are expected to reduce the computational time complexity of the problem. Their computational efficiency is evaluated later in this article through numerical analysis on randomly generated problems.
