Binary neural networks(BNNs)show promising utilization in cost and power-restricted domains such as edge devices and mobile *** is due to its significantly less computation and storage demand,but at the cost of degraded *** close the accuracy gap,in this paper we propose to add a complementary activation function(AF)ahead of the sign based binarization,and rely on the genetic algorithm(GA)to automatically search for the ideal *** AFs can help extract extra information from the input data in the forward pass,while allowing improved gradient approximation in the backward *** novel AFs are identified through our GA-based search,while most of them show improved performance(up to 2.54%on ImageNet)when testing on different datasets and network ***,periodic functions are identified as a key component for most of the discovered AFs,which rarely exist in human designed *** method offers a novel approach for designing general and application-specific BNN *** will be released on Github.

the isomeric structures, isomerization and decomposition of silylenoids H(2)SiMX (MX=KF, KCl, LiBr, NaBr and KBr) have been investigated by ab initio molecular orbital theory. these silylenoids have four kinds of very similar equilibrium structures. the three-membered ring and p-complex structures should be stable and experimentally detectable. the lifetime of sigma-complex and tetrahedral structures would be very short and experimentally undetectable.

Higher-order displacement-based finite element methods are useful for simulating bending problems and potentially addressing mesh-locking associated with nearly-incompressible elasticity,yet are computationally *** address the computational expense,the paper presents a matrix-free,displacement-based,higher-order,hexahedral finite element implementation of compressible and nearly-compressible(ν→0.5)linear isotropic elasticity at small strain with p-multigrid *** cost,solve time,and scalability of the implementation with respect to strain energy error are investigated for polynomial order p=1,2,3,4 for compressible elasticity,and p=2,3,4 for nearly-incompressible elasticity,on different number of CPU cores for a tube bending *** the context of this matrix-free implementation,higher-order polynomials(p=3,4)generally are faster in achieving better accuracy in the solution than lower-order polynomials(p=1,2).However,for a beam bending simulation with stress concentration(singularity),it is demonstrated that higher-order finite elements do not improve the spatial order of convergence,even though accuracy is improved.

the multi-dimensional spaces, spanned by the dimensionless numbers describing the equilibrium states or the macroscopic chemical kinetics of complicated chemical reaction systems, have been used for the data processing of the process-es in materials preparation or industrial production. It has been found that there are four common topological types of the rela-tions between the optimization zone and the operation zone in the multi-dimensional spaces. Various computation methods us-ing pattern recognition, artificial neural network and genetic algorithm are used for model-building and optimization strategy searching. An integrated system named KDPAG has been built for materials optimal design or industrial optimization. Appli-cation to chemical, petrochemical and metallurgical industries and materials optimal design gives good results.

BACKGROUND: Associating liver partition and portal vein ligation for staged hepatectomy (ALPPS) has recently been developed to induce rapid liver hypertrophy to reduce the chance of post-hepatectomy liver failure in patients with borderline or insufficient future liver remnant. ALPPS is still in an early developmental stage and its techniques have not been standardized. this study aimed to review the technical modifications of the conventional ALPPS procedure. DATA SOURCES: Studies were identified by searching MEDLINE and PubMed for articles published from January 2007 to December 2016 using the keywords 'associating liver partition and portal vein ligation for staged hepatectomy' and 'ALPPS'. Additional articles were identified by a manual search of references from key articles. RESULTS: there have been a lot of modifications of the conventional ALPPS. these are classified as: (1) modifications aiming to improve surgical results; (2) modifications aiming to expand surgical indications; (3) salvage ALPPS; (4) ALPPS using the minimally invasive approach. Some of these modifications have made the conventional ALPPS procedure to become even more complex, although there have also been other attempts to make the procedure less complex. the results of most of these modifications have been reported in small case series or case reports. We need better well-designed studies to establish the true roles of these modifications. However, it is interesting to see how this conventional ALPPS procedure has evolved since its introduction. CONCLUSIONS: there is a trend for the use of minimally invasive procedure in the phase 1 or 2 of the conventional ALPPS procedure. Some of these modifications have expanded the use of ALPPS in patients who have been considered to have unresectable liver tumors. the long-term oncological outcomes of these modifications are still unknown.
