Concordance in the Interpretation of Cervical Cytology for the Early Diagnosis of Cervical Cancer

Objective: To identify the diagnostic concordance in the interpretation of cervical smears. Material and Methods: Cross-sectional study from October 2011 to January 2013. 50 samples were read by every 4 cyto-technologists who are the total staffs that read and interpret cytological specimens from a public health institution of the city of San Luis Potosí, México. The cytological diagnosis was confirmed by a certified pathologist. checklist was developed to determine the quality of the interpretation composed of three sections: adequate sample, inadequate sample and cytological diagnosis. The diagnostic report was made by Bethesda System 2001 classification. Diagnostic concordance was measured through the Kappa coefficient. To establish the differences in cytological diagnosis between each cyto-technologist, chi square test was applied. Results: The concordance is acceptable in the classification of samples as inadequate (k = 0.66). The negative diagnosis was a significant concordance between each cytotechnologist and pathologist;however, no case had very good concordance. In the epithelial abnormalities, only the cytotechnologist 2 had significant concordance with the pathologist, however, its concordance is low. In the case of glandular abnormalities, only cytotechnologist 1 had no significant concordance with the pathologist. The percentage of true negatives was 30%, true positives 20%, false negatives 50% and false positives 0 %. There are significant differences between the readings of cyto-technologist 1 and 2 (p chnologists and pathologists is below the required minimum level set by national and international standards.

Introduction and Aims: Acute appendicitis is a commonly established diagnosis in the approach of abdominal pain. It is usually due to an acute inflammatory process in the appendix. Nevertheless, there is a small percentage of cases due to non-frequent etiologies that are only identifiable based on histopathological analysis. The aim of this study was to determine the prevalence and characterization of these unusual findings. Materials and Methods: The present study was a cross-sectional study in a third-level hospital in Mexico City. Clinical information was collected from unusual findings in the histopathological analysis of 1018 appendectomy specimens between January 2012 and April 2017. Results: In total, 1018 appendectomy specimens were included. In 11 of those appendices (1.08%), unusual findings compatible with appendicular tumors were identified. Carcinoid tumor found in the tip of the appendix was the most frequently reported finding. The muscular layer was affected in most cases;up to 25% of regional ganglia were invaded. Most of the patients presented with abdominal pain and clinical signs suggestive of acute appendicitis. The preferred approach for surgical treatment was laparoscopic. Discussion and Conclusion: The prevalence of unusual findings in our population was 1.08%, with carcinoid tumors the most frequently established diagnosis among those (0.58%), according to previously reported literature data.

Introduction: The World Health Organization establishes that 80% of the world’s population uses traditional medicine for their primary care, because they contain compounds responsible for their properties. Objective: To evaluate the antifungal effect of the essential oil of Citrus paradisi against C. albicans and the cytotoxic effect in three cell lines in vitro. Methods: The phytochemical characterization of the oil was carried out by chemical methods and Gas chromatography (GC-MS) and the antifungal effect against C. albicans (ATCC 90029) was evaluated by the Kirby-Bauer method, which evaluated concentrations of 0.75 - 20 μg/mL and compared with nystatin 100,000 Ul/mL as a positive control. The percentage of the relative inhibitory effect was calculated. The minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) was determined at 24 hours. Moreover, the cytotoxic effect on C. albicans and cell lines was determined by the colorimetric MTT tetrazolium assay. Finally, the antifungal effect against Candida strains isolated from clinical samples was evaluated at a concentration of 20 μg/mL. Results: The essential oil showed an antifungal effect with a percentage of inhibition of 123%. The MIC was 2.5 μg/mL, and the cytotoxicity index was 5.44 μg/mL for C. albicans. The IC50 values were 21.060, 9.482 and 4.176 μg/mL for Vero E6, J774A.1 and MDBK cells respectively. Conclusion: These results show the use of C. paradisi essential oil as an alternative treatment in oral antifungal therapy, it is beneficial due to its antifungal effect and its low toxicity on cell cultures.

The present study reports bioactive constituents from biquinho pepper,such as carotenoids,capsaicinoids,and capsinoids,identified by *** pepper extract showed an antioxidant potential by DPPH(33.17±0.08%),ORAC(32.35±0.02μM TE/g),β-carotene/linoleic acid(55.80±1.30%),and FRAP(315.88±4.23μmol TE/g)***,in vivo antioxidant analyses demonstrated that the pepper extract(170μg/mL)decreased the damage promoted by H_(2)O_(2) in Saccharomyces cerevisiae *** balls were prepared using different concentrations of pepper(0.0%,0.5%,0.75%,1.0%)to investigate its antioxidant effect during frozen *** pepper effectively reduced the formation of cholesterol oxides and preserved essential fatty acids,mainly in samples containing 1.0%of ***,this treatment was more efficient than sodium erythorbate(pch was used as *** kinetics of cholesterol oxidation was also determined,showing that both cholesterol degradation and cholesterol oxides formation fit a first-order kinetic model(R^(2)>0.8).

The study of the mineral and organic content of the Allende meteorite is important for our understanding of the molecular evolution of the universe as well as the ancient Earth. Previous studies have characterized the magnetic minerals present in ordinary and carbonaceous chondrites, providing information on the evolution of magnetic fields. The interaction of organic compounds with magnetic minerals is a possible source of chemical diversity, which is crucial for molecular evolution. Carbon compounds in meteorites are of great scientific interest for a variety of reasons, such as their relevance to the origins of chirality in living organisms. This study presents the characterization of organic and mineral compounds in the Allende meteorite. The structural and physicochemical characterization of the Allende meteorite was accomplished through light microscopy, powder X-ray diffraction with complementary Rietveld refinement, Raman and infrared spectroscopy, mass spectrometry, scanning electron microscopy, and atomic force microscopy using magnetic signal methods to determine the complex structure and the interaction of organic compounds with magnetic Ni-Fe minerals. The presence of Liesegang-like patterns of chondrules in fragments of the Allende structure may also be relevant to understanding how the meteorite was formed. Other observations include the presence of magnetic materials and nanorod-like solids with relatively similar sizes as well as the heterogeneous distribution of carbon in chondrules. Signals observed in the Raman and infrared spectra resemble organic compounds such as carbon nanotubes and peptide-like molecules that have been previously reported in other meteorites, making the Mexican Allende meteorite a feasible sample for the study of the early Earth and exoplanetary bodies.

Background:Tuberculosis(TB)prevention through the use of preventive treatment is a critical activity in the elimination *** multiple settings,limited staffing has been identified as a barrier to managing preventive treatment for TB *** study aims to determine how health center staffing,service type,and TB caseload affects implementation of isoniazid preventive therapy(IPT)forTB contacts in southern ***:We conducted an ecological study in 2019 in southern Lima,*** the review of medical records,we identified contacts ofTB patients who initiated IPT during 2016-2018,and who were 0-19 years old,the age group eligible for IPT according to Peruvian *** assessed bivariate associations between health center characteristics(numbers of physicians and nurses,types of services available,annual TB caseload)and IPT initiation and completion using binomial logistic ***:Among 977 contacts,69%took more than a week to start IPT and 41%did not complete *** those who successfully completed IPT,58%did not complete full medical *** was no significant difference in IPT completion or adherence based on whether health centers had more physicians and nurses,more comprehensive services,or higherTB *** contacts,female sex was associated with delay in initiating IPT(P=0.005),age 5-19 years old was associated with completion of IPT(P=0.025)and agech is needed to identify how IPT implementation can be improved,potentially through improving stafftraining or monitoring and supervision.

Background: This document includes recommendations and guidelines issued by a group of Mexican researchers and specialists gathered in the First National Colloquium for the Diagnosis and Management of chronic Myeloid Leukaemia (CML) by initiative of Instituto Nacional de Cancerología and with the support of the Leukaemia Department of the MD Anderson Cancer Center. Mexico lacks of updated information taken from its own reality on the diagnosis and treatment of CML and other haematological disorders;besides, there are no national guidelines. Aim: To publish a consensus document with guidelines for the management of CML adjusted to the national environment and overall characteristics. Method: The participants answered a DELPHI questionnaire about the overall aspects of the disease, aiming to target controversial topics, discuss them in the colloquium, and to agree on the best ones. After those meetings, a final document was drawn up. Results: The group presents recommendations for definition, diagnosis, prognosis, monitoring, and treatment of CML in Mexico. Conclusions: Having consensus guidelines for the clinical management of CML in our country will enable the consensual practice of Mexican specialists regarding the clinical approach to CML, as well as optimize the resources which allow the rational planning of the medical care strategies.
