We aimed with this study to evaluate the potential of oilseed crops planted following soybean, in terms of their ability to inhibit the occurrence of weed species under Brazilian Savannah cropping systems. The long-term experiment was installed in 2010 at Dourados, MS, Brazil, and in completely randomized blocks design with five replications with 12 × 24 m plot size. For three consecutive years (2010/11, 2011/12 and 2012/13), soybeans were planted in all the area by October/November being harvested in February/March, when previously marked plots were planted in April with: (1) radish (Raphanus sativus);(2) rapeseed (Brassica napus);(3) crambe (Crambe abyssinica);(4) winter fallow-no plantation after soybeans. In all years the same crop was repeated at the same plots, with no crop rotation. Phytosociological characterization of weed species was carried out in winter (after oilseeds harvest), pre-planting and post-emergence of soybean for the three years. Relative abundance, frequency and dominance, as well as the importance value for each species, was obtained. Areas were also intra-characterized by the coefficients of Simpson, Shannon-Weiner and Shannon-Weiner’s Evenness Proportion, and areas were compared for species dissimilarity with Jaccard’s presence-only coefficient, by multivariate cluster analysis. Oilseed crops definitely contribute for sustainable weed management as a cultural tool. The most important oilseed crop weeds in the Savannah-like region of Brazil were Amaranthus hybridus, Richardia brasiliensis, Lepidium virginicum, Leonotis nepetifolia and Hybanthus parviflorus. After three years of repetitive crop succession, some weeds were selected, and rotation in Winter is advised at least every two or three years.

This study was conducted in two stages, in 2006 the formation of cross, in the experimental field of the Universidad Autonoma Agraria Antonio Narro Unidad Laguna (UAAANUL), and the evaluation of the same in 2007;at two locations with three environments, a locality was the experimental field of UAAANUL during spring and summer cycles and another location was the Niagara, Municipality of Aguascalientes, during the spring cycle. The genetic material used consisted of three groups of lines: the first group formed by four lines from the UAAANUL, the second group, two lines from INIFAP, and the third group, 10 lines of the International Center for Maize Improvement and Wheat (CIMMYT). The main objective was to estimate the effects of general combining ability (GCA) of the lines, and the specific combining ability (SCA) of their crosses and heterosis, to estimate its use in a breeding program. Estimates of general combining ability (GCA) and specific combining ability (SCA) were obtained using an analysis of line x line. To forage yield (FY), B-40 (16.84 t·ha-1) and AN-447 (1.54 t·ha-1) and to grain yield (GY), AN-388R (2.31 t·ha-1) had the greatest effect of GCA in both types of yield. The greatest effects of SCA for (FY) were cross AN-447XCML-264 (17.56 t·ha-1) and AN-388RXCML-319 (16.54 t·ha-1), in (GY) were cross AN-447XCML-315 (1.94 t·ha-1) and B-40XCML-319 (1.78 t·ha-1). For heterosis, higher value in forage yield was cross AN-447XCML-264 (20.7%), in grain yield, were B-40XCML-319 (27.1%) and B-32XCML-319 (22.1%) crosses. These results show that it is possible to structure a hybrid program using best lines from CIMMYT, INIFAP and UAAANUL.

In this paper we discuss ways to obtain information about the quality of ground water and their availability. We classify the different approaches in two categories： geophysical methods, e.g., electroresistivity sounding, seismic survey, gravimetry, MT （magnetotelluric） method, and geochemical methods. The former ones are able to provide information on the geological structure,meaning depth, range, amount of water and possible connections among different exploration areas or regions at risk due to contamination. On the other hand, the last ones provide information about the quality of water and the possible of use for agriculture, industry or human consumption. As a case study we aim at the Guarani Aquifer, more specifically at its recharge zone on the southern rim.

The Use of Coffee Pulp as a Potential Alternative Supplement in Ruminant Diets

The study was conducted to evaluate the use of dried industrial coffee pulp in diets as supplement for ruminants. Two diets were formulated： A and B with 30% coffee pulp content each and different concentrations of carbohydrates （milled corn, corn bran, molasses, alfalfa hay） and fibrous residues （corn stubble, sugar cane mash） as ingredients. The dried coffee pulp was subjected to proximate analyses, whilst the two diets were subjected to nutritional and microbiological analyses. The results of the proximate analyses showed that the dried coffee pulp has 18% crude protein （CP）, 33.6% crude fibre （CF） and total digestible nutrients （TDN） content of 63.8%. Diets A and B had the similar mean values for CP, CF and TDN （17%, 4.3% and 75.6%, respectively）. The microbiological results showed that the two diets had the same minimal values for Escherichia coli, Salmonella spp. and coliform bacteria, which were all within the normal allowed values. The results indicate that dry coffee pulp in diets could be supplemented to ruminants for supporting milk and meat production without any adverse effect on their health.

The study investigates the effect of spatial and temporal tree-fall gaps structure on spiders’ assemblage in an Atlantic forest fragmented area in Brazil. It was conducted in the Michelin Ecological Preserve-REM (Bahia), 190 ha forest remnant. Samples were collected on leaf-litter (50 × 50 cm) at five tree-fall gaps formations (2), within five adjacent primary forest and five inner edge parcels. During 16 months (between May 2009 and October 2012), 480 m2 leaf-litter samples were collected, from which spiders were extracted using mini-Winkler traps. The objective of this study was to isolate entomopathogenic fungus from fleas (Ctenocephalides canis Curtis) collected from Cannis familiaris specimens. From 60 collected fleas, two dead insects presented white mycelia growth on the body surface, changing to a creamy color as time passed;the insects presented a mummified aspect, typical characteristic caused by entomopathogenic fungus. This fungus was identified as Beauveria bassiana (Balsamo-Crivelli) Vuillemin by their mycelia characteristics, macro- and micro-morphology. Up to our knowledge, this is the first report of entomopathogenic fungus isolated from adult C. canis fleas.

Educational Video Increases Maternal Self-Efficacy for Prevention of Diarrhoea in Young Children:A Randomised Clinical Trial

The aim of this study was to compare the scores of maternal self-efficacy for child diarrhoea prevention, between intervention and control groups, according to sanitary, social and demographic characteristics. A randomised clinical trial was carried out on 163 mothers of children under 5 years old. Data collection was conducted during two months, at two different moments (M0 and M1);at the moment M0 only the intervention group watched the educational video to promote self-efficacy for child diarrhoea prevention;at M1 (two months later) the scale was applied to both groups. In the intervention group, greater mean self-efficacy scores were obtained compared with the control group. The following variables showed statistically significant associations (p < 0.05) with maternal self-efficacy: age 35 or over;high school education;working outside the home;residence with 4 to 5 people;house not of brick or mortar;public refuse collection;piped water supply;consumption of mineral water;and public sewerage network. After use of the video “Diarrhoea: you can prevent it”, the maternal self-efficacy increased, proving that this strategy is able to assist the nursing staff in educational practices.
