Mesenchymal stem cell enhances chondral defects healing in horses

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of intralesional Mesenchymal Stem Cells (MSC) on the treatment of experimentally induced articular chondral defects in horses, emphasizing the benefits of this application in veterinary medicine. Chondral defects were induced in the medial femoral trochlea of both hind limbs of four horses. Thirty days post induction;the horses were divided into two groups. The G1 was submitted to treatment with MSC and the G2 was the control group. Clinical evaluations, synovial fluid analysis and synovial Prostaglandin E2 (PGE2) assessment were performed prior to defects and fortnightly up to 120 and 150 days. Macroscopic, histopathological and histochemical evaluations were performed at the end of the experiment. The treatment with MSC reduced the intraarticular inflammatory process. The G1 showed lower PGE2 concentrations in the synovial fluid and greater percentage of mononuclear cells and lower percentages of lymphocytes and neutrophils. The treatment improved the macro and microscopic aspects of repair tissue. No difference was observed in the scores of lameness between the G1 and G2. The use of MSC in the treatment of chondral defects minimized joint inflammation, as confirmed by synovial fluid analysis. The treatment resulted in an improved repair tissue, verified by macroscopic examination, histochemical and histopathological analysis.

Evaluation of Physicochemical,Microbiological and Sensory Stability of Frozen Stored Vacuum-Packed Lamb Meat

Nowadays, lamb meat represents only 7% of all meat produced in the world. In recent years the demand for standardized lamb meat cuts has been considered of great importance and the marketing occurs predominantly in the form of frozen cuts. Herewith, the main of this work was to evaluate the stability and safety of lamb meat during frozen storage. Meats were vacuum packed in high barrier multilayer plastic iflms and stored during 12 mon at （-18±1）℃. The meat stability was assessed by physical and chemical （lipid oxidation, objective color, pH value, cooking losses and instrumental texture）, microbiological （total count of psychrotrophic, coliform count at 45℃, coagulase-positive staphylococci and the presence of Salmonella） and sensory analysis （acceptance test and visual evaluation）. The vacuum packed lamb meat remained stable as to most physical and chemical indexes. Microbiological indexes showed good stability throughout the storage period according to Brazilian legislation standards to pathogenic microorganisms. Although a signiifcant reduction in tenderness （shear force increase from 3 to 8 kg）, it showed a good sensorial acceptance for all attributes tested, including texture, with scores of around 7 （like moderately） during the 12 mon of storage. Therefore, it can be concluded that, under the conditions applied in this study, lamb meat presents a shelf life of at least 12 mon when stored at-18℃.

Energy Efficiency Technologies for Hydroelectric Power Plants: A Case Study in Brazil

Hydroelectricity has great importance for the global macroeconomy. In Brazil, hydroelectricity has been highlighted as the main source of generation of the electric system both for its economic competitiveness and for the abundance of this energy resource. Based on a diagnosis methodology, this article presents a case study in a Brazilian hydroelectric plant in order to optimize the use of energy and propose improvements regarding the rationalization of its application. The systems associated with energy generation were evaluated and the results proved to be potentially advantageous with an estimated savings of 2910 MWh/year in the electricity consumption of the installation itself, with better use of the equipment and the possibility of increasing the power generated.

Comparison Study between Ultra-Chopper and Divide &Conquer Techniques

Background: Hard brunescent nuclei are difficult to chop with traditional techniques, because leathery tough strands may connect the posterior surface and span across the fragments, which poses a challenge to completely divide the nuclei. The ultra-chopping technique was designed to mitigate this issue. Purpose: To compare the intraoperative parameters between Ultra-Chopper and Divide & Conquer Techniques. Setting: This study was performed at Hospital Oftalmológico de Brasília, Brasília, DF, Brazil. Patients and Methods: A prospective, randomized and comparative study. Patients with the diagnosis of dense cataract and surgical extraction programmed were divided into two groups: Ultra-Chopper and Divide & Conquer. Intraoperative data were collected and submitted for the statistical analysis. Results: 36 eyes were included, 19 eyes with Ultra-Chopper and 17 eyes with Divide & Conquer. Groups were statistically equivalent in age and nucleus density. There were no surgical complications. Torsional time and cumulative dissipated energy were significantly reduced in the ultra-chopper group. The ultra-chopper group had less total case time, fluid usage and aspiration (ASP) time. Conclusion: The ultra-chopper tech- nique can reduce ultrasound energy dissipation during cataract surgery, and decrease case time, fluid usage and ASP time.

Energy Integration in South America Region and the Energy Sustainability of the Nations

The objective of this manuscript is to analyze relation involving the energy sector and socioeco-nomic growth and, then, contextualize the process of energy integration within the development policies in South America. The methodology considers data related to the world’s economy and energy consumption and energy integration policy in countries and regions;and, South America’s energy potential and the energy integration process. Results show that despite the political and institutional difficulties involving the process, energy integration can bring a lot of benefits for countries development. The process of energy integration in South America is divided in three moments, but in both periods the transnational energy projects were restricted, mostly, by a bi-lateral plan and the creation of physical links in a region. In the 21th century’s context, it should be noted Brazil’s participation which has been consolidated as a lead country in this process, and, also the IIRSA (Initiative for the Integration of Regional Infrastructure in South America, nowadays renamed as COSIPLAN) like the main initiative in energy integration in the continent, in a context where the projects are no longer limited to traditional economic blocs. Finally, we note a lack of consensus in defining a comprehensive model of integration and solving asymmetries both within countries and between them.

Vadose Zone Heterogeneity Effect on Unsaturated Water Flow Modeling at Meso-Scale

The understanding of unsaturated flow in heterogeneous formations is a prerequisite to the understanding of pollutant transfer in the vadose zone and the proper management of infiltration basins settled over such heterogeneous formations. This study addresses the effect of lithological heterogeneity of a glaciofluvial deposit on flow in the vadose zone underneath an infiltration basin settled in the Lyon suburbs. The basin had already been the subject of several previous studies, some of which demonstrated the impact of soil heterogeneity. But all of them were only based on the sedimentological study of a trench and no study addressed the potential spatial variability of results due to the spatial variability of soil heterogeneity. In this study, we model flow in the vadose zone for several case studies, including drainage, water infiltration during a rainfall event, and a complete meteorological chronic. These calculations were conducted for several sections, previously characterized in the basin using GPR and sedimentological study and compared with a blank (homogeneous section). The results clearly show that heterogeneity impacts unsaturated flow and that these impacts depend upon the section considered. Some geometrical architectural and textural parameters were proposed to explain the spatial variability and effect of the soil heterogeneity on unsaturated flow, thus establishing the first step towards modeling unsaturated flow in the basin at the meso-scale.

Evaluation of the Effectiveness of Preloaded IOL Injectors in Surgical Time

Background: The implantation of the intraocular lens (IOL) is still subject to error and complication, as it can result in traumatic opening of the IOL leading to rupture of the posterior capsule and zonular dialysis, it takes time to train paramedic teams to assemble such IOLs with the manual injectors. Moreover, there is a potential risk of comtamination and endophthalmitis as there is manipulation of the IOL and cartridge. The preloaded IOLs tend to reduce those unwanted results and may optimize the surgical time. Purpose: The aim of this study is to compare the effectiveness and implantation time between three injectors and three intraocular lenses, two pre-loaded and one conventional. Methodology: Videos of thirty patients undergoing cataract surgery from December 2019 to December 2020 at the Hospital Oftalmológico de Brasília (HOB), Brasília, Brazil were included in this observational, analytical retrospective study, non randomized. All patients had their surgeries recorded, from which the time of injection and opening of the intraocular lens (IOL) was extracted, 20 eyes were implanted with preloaded intraocular lens, and 10 eyes with conventional IOL implant. The patients were divided into three groups with similar eye characteristics. The first received the AutonoMeTM (CE) injector with the Clareon® IOL, the second the IsertTM injector (I) with the Hoya® IOL, and the third was injected with Johnson & Johnson Platinum 1 Series injector used to deliver Sensar® One AAB00 l

Calibration of Hargreaves-Samani Equation for Estimating Reference Evapotranspiration in Sub-Humid Region of Brazil

Reference evapotranspiration (ETo) is an important parameter used in numerous applications, such as climatological and hydrological studies, as well as for water resources planning and management. There are several methods to estimate ETo, being that the FAO Penman-Monteith (EToPM) method is considered standard. This method needs many parameters (solar radiation, air temperature, humidity and wind speed), however there are still many uncovered areas, suggesting the need for methods of calculating evapotranspiration based on few meteorological elements, such as air temperature. Therefore, this study aimed to determine the ETo by Hargreaves-Samani method in the experimental watershed of the “Riacho do Papagaio” farm, in county of Sao Joao, in north-eastern Brazil, using data of 2011 and 2012. Reference evapotranspiration estimated by non-calibrated Hargreaves-Samani method (EToHS) was overestimated in all months (RMSE = 1.43 mm·d-1), mainly in months of lower evaporative demand (from May to July). Because of these tendencies, this method cannot be used in its original form to estimate ET for this region;therefore, a calibration of radiation adjustment coefficient (kRs) was performed. The calibrated Hargreaves-Samani method (EToHSc) had better performance (RMSE = 0.52 mm·d-1), being suitable for predicting ETo in this region.

Background:Hepatitis E virus(HEV)is a member of the Hepeviridae family;it has four main genotypes and one serotype.While genotypes 1 and 2 cause epidemic hepatitis and are transmitted via water and the fecal-oral route,genotypes 3 and 4 are zoonotic In the various seroprevalence studies of hepatitis E in Brazil,the numbers reported vary widely and are difficult to interpret.The aim of this study was to analyze existing seroprevalence studies of hepatitis E in adults in Brazil.Main text:We searched the PubMed,Latin American and Caribbean Health Sciences and Embase databases for studies published from inception to May 12,2018 concerning infection by HEV in Brazil without time period or language restrictions.We included studies that presented data concerning hepatitis E seroprevalence in adults in Brazil,had a sample size>50 patients and whose method used for the detection of anti-HEV was standardized and commercialized.We also evaluated the quality of the articles using a list of criteria that totalized 9 items.Of the 20 studies ultimately analyzed,10(50%)were from the southeast region of Brazil,3(15%)were from the central-west region,3(15%)were from the northern region,2(10%)were from the northeast region and 2(10%)were from the southern region.Regarding the quality evaluation of the studies,the mean score was 5.6(range:4-8).The estimated overall seroprevalence of HEV infection in the adult population was 6.0%(95%CI:5.0-7.0);in subgroup analyses,we observed that the prevalence of anti-HEV antibodies in blood donors was 7.0%(95%CI:5.0-8.0),whereas in the general population,it was 3.0%(95%CI:2.0-4.0).Conclusions:The results of this systematic review indicate that there should be national investment in the prevention of hepatitis E virus infection in Brazil,including the implementation of improvements in basic sanitation and guidance regarding the appropriate handling of animal waste and the optimal cooking of vegetables,meat and their derivatives.

This documentary research aimed to describe the results of an epidemiological survey that sought to determine the prevalence of Infections Related to Health Care (IRHC) in newborns admitted to a Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) at the city of Rio de Janeiro. For methodology, the existing data in the original research database were used as the primary source. The method used was the case study in a quantitative approach. The data have been statistically arranged by odds ratio, which measured the possibility of IRHC development at the 102 newborns, by exposition at the risk factors. Results: IRHC prevalence with pneumonias, sepsis, navel’s infection and ocular infections predominance rises. Prematures are 4.10 more susceptible. Twelve hours after amniotic rupture there are 1.77 more chances of infections. Babies with more than 10 days of hospitalization are 4.70 more susceptible than those with 10 days. The registers examined were incipient at the IRHC’s characterization, beginning and duration, which make the IRHC’s diagnostic/notification difficult.
