Primary hyperparathyroidism (PHPT) is a relative common medical problem caused by the inappropriate secretion of parathyroid hormone (PTH) by one or more parathyroid glands. The diagnosis is established by serum calcium and PTH levels and once the diagnosis is established imaging studies help localize the hyperfunctioning adenoma in preparation for curative surgery. Until now, the imaging studies most commonly utilized in PHPT are ultrasonography and 99mTc-Sesta-methoxyisobutylisonitrile (mIBI) parathyroid scintigraphy. However, these studies often fail to localize the adenoma and inappropriately delay patient referral to a potentially curative surgery. We present the case of a 64-year-old female with symptomatic PHPT who had 3 negative 99mTc-Sestamibi Scans over a period of 5 years who eventually had a PET/CT with 11C-Choline that identified a right lower parathyroid adenoma. She underwent a right lower parathyroidectomy and had a successful outcome. We present a review the current imaging techniques used in the management of PHPT including 99mTc-Sesta-mIBI scintigraphy and its limitations and novel use of PET/CT with 11C-Choline and 18F-Choline in this disease and emphasize the fact that, according to current guidelines, failure to localize the adenoma should not delay referral for curative surgery.

Nerve Fibres Detection in Paired Eutopic and Ectopic Endometria from Women with Endometriosis: Correlation with Nerve Growth Factor Expression

Endometriosis, disorder characterized by the presence of endometrium outside the uterus cavity, is associated with chronic pelvic pain. Nerve growth factor (NGF) participates in development, repair and survival of neurons. We evaluated NGF and nerve fibres in eutopic and ectopic endometria from women with endometriosis and in normal endometrium from control patients without endometriosis. In endometrium collected during surgery for endometriosis (paired eutopic and ectopic endometria, proliferative n = 6 and secretory n = 7 phases) or during tubal ligation or hysterectomy for no endometrial disease (control, proliferative n = 6 and secretory n = 6 phases), NGF and neurofilament (NF) of nerve fibres were studied by immunohistochemistry measuring integrated optical density (IOD). Cytoplasmic NGF was detected in glands and stroma in all control, eutopic and ectopic endometrial samples;no statistical differences were found throughout the menstrual cycle. However, total (gland plus stroma) NGF IOD was higher in eutopic than in ectopic endometria during the secretory phase. NF was detected only in ectopic endometrium being eutopic and control endometria negative to this antibody, and no differences were observed between proliferative and secretory phases. Negative and significant correlation was found between NGF and NF expression in ectopic endometria only during the secretory phase. In conclusion, our results show a significant negative correlation between NGF and myelinated nerve fibres in secretory ectopic endometria. NGF expression was not significantly modified throughout the menstrual cycle in control and in endometriosis, even higher in eutopic than in ectopic tissues;the NGF secretion from lesions to pelvic cavity cannot be ruled out, and could explain the negative correlation observed. Although NF and NGF are not useful as diagnostic markers for endometriosis, their expression may be related to endometrial physiology and pathophysiology of the disease.

The Impact of Depressive Symptoms on Neuropsychological Performance Tests in HIV-Infected Individuals: A Study of the Hawaii Aging with HIV Cohort

Background: The frequency of neurocognitive impairment (NCI) in human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) -infected individuals remains high despite the availability of potent antiretroviral therapy (ART). The concurrence of depression among HIV-infected patients with NCI is common, especially among older individuals. Depression has been implicated as a risk factor for impaired neuropsychological performance (NP). This study explored the relationship between depressive symptoms and NP testing in HIV-infected individuals. methods: A cross-sectional analysis was performed within the Hawaii Aging with HIV Cohort, a large prospective study of cognition of older (50 or more years old) compared to younger (20 to 39 years old) HIV-infected individuals. Results: Two hundred and eighty-five HIV infected participants (157 older and 128 younger) were administered a battery of NP tests to measure performance in major cognitive domains. Depressive symptoms were measured using the Beck Depression Inventory (BDI). The rates of depressive symptoms and neuropsychological impairment were similar in older and younger groups. multivariate analyses revealed depressive symptoms were associated with NP test impairment in the younger group. In the older group, depressive symptoms were not associated with NP. Conclusion: This study suggests that depressive symptoms are associated with NP test impairment in younger HIV-infected individuals, but not in older individuals.

＜正＞Scar pigmentation changes throughout its maturation process and it is often used as one of the indicators for scar maturation,yet it is often rated *** purpose of this study was to investigate the application of a commercial spectrocolorimeter to produce a reliable measurement on scar *** Internationale de l’Eclairage （CIE） model of color has been adopted in this study for measurement of scar pigmentation 24 patients with hypertrophic scars at different stages of maturation were selected for the study,were inspected by two therapists using the Vancouver scar scale （VSS） and then using spectrocolorimeter for inter-rater *** measurements were taken after 30 min by the same group of therapists （test-retest reliability）.Results indicated that the inter-rater reliability among the three therapists was satisfactory,with intra-class correlation coefficient （ICC）（2,2） from 0.50 to 0.99 in all the three color *** test-retest reliability of the spectrocolorimeterwas satisfactory with ICC （3,6） ranged from 0.95 to *** difference was also noted between the measurements of normal skin and hypertrophic scar （P＜0.00,t-values:from 2.78 to 0.05,d.f.:from 29.7 to 46.00） in all color parameters,except the chroma C*.We also found a positive relationship between VSS scores and the spectrocolorimeter *** spectrocolorimeter is found to be a reliable instrument to quantify scar pigmentation and to differentiate normal skin and scar *** further studies,the constructs of scar properties could further be explored using this spectrocolorimeter. 2003 Elsevier Ltd and *** rights reserved.

Examination of Whey Degreasing by modified membrane Filtration

The largest amount of dairy by-products, especially the whey, comes from the manufacture of cheese. The whey proteins are used in several different industry technologies. The forage production is used for animal feeding in the forms of various flours mixed in feeds, and the food industry uses whey proteins as human nutrition, such as different dry soups, infant formulas and supplements. The fat components of whey may inhibit the efficient processing and might impair the use of whey in these technologies. Thus, the aim of the experiment was to investigate a cheap and economical separation of the lipid fraction of whey. This separation method was made by microfiltration, which is an inexpensive, effective and energy efficient method for this task. During the measurements, 0.2 μm and 0.45 μm microfiltration membranes were used in a laboratory tubular membrane filtration module, and the membrane separation method was combined and modified by using astatic mixer and/or air insufflation. The same pore size membranes were used in a vibrating membrane filtration equipment （VSEP）, too. The two different membrane filtration devices allowed the comparison of the effect of vibration and the effect of the static mixer and/or air insufflation. The flux values above 0.2 mPa transmembrane pressures strongly decreased on using the tubular membrane. Therefore, it can be determined that the use of the lower transmembrane pressures gave better flux combined with air insufflation and the use of static mixer. The flux values increased three times higher with using vibration during the microfiltration process than that without vibration. Comparing these methods, it can be concluded that the separation made on tubular membrane （0.2 μm） combined with statics mixer gave sufficient result according to the degreasing, retentions and flux values of the other components.

Each year in Hong Kong,about 350,000 surgical procedures are conducted for various types of *** review indicated that the prevalence of hypertrophic scar among Caucasians ranged from 15% to 63% and that the incidence was even higher among *** study aims to find out the prevalence rate of hypertrophic scar among the Hong Kong Chinese population after standardized surgical procedures.A systematic and objective scar measurement protocol is implemented in this *** spectrocolorimeter,miniscan XE plus was used to measure the scar pigmentation based on the theory of the CIE colour *** tissue ultrasound palpation system (TUPS) was employed to measure scar *** may 2001 to December 2003,154 patients,who received surgical intervention at the Department of Orthopaedics and Traumatology of a large regional hospital,were invited to join a scar-screening *** hundred and fifteen patients (74.67%) were found to have signs of hypertrophic scar based on thickness,pliability,pigmentation and vascularity (using the Vancouver scar scale (VSS) score).One hundred and one patients consented to have more comprehensive scar assessment. Results indicated that the scar thickness was 4.91.03 *** with the adjacent normal skin,the color of hypertrophic scar was significantly different in terms of lightness (d.f.=100,t=9.36,pmong patients reported pain (2.19.74) and itchiness (1,47.53) over the *** objective scar assessments showed that more than 70% of scars had increase in thickness and pigmentation after *** than 40% of patients reported pain and *** results showed that more than 70% of the scars in the HK Chinese population had become hypertrophic in terms of pigmentation,thickness and physical symptoms such as pain and itchiness 1 month after the surgical

针对无土栽培营养液循环系统中离子供应和吸收不平衡形成的营养液浓度增高、盐分增加 ,对产量和品质的影响 ,该文就不同蒸腾条件下 ,番茄对高盐分的反应进行了试验和分析。结果表明 :当营养液电导度 EC ( m S/cm)超过 2时 ,每增加一个 EC单位 ,上市的鲜重生产效率降低 5 .1% ,而收获的果数未受到影响 ,因此产量的降低主要是由于单果重的降低 ( 3 .8% )和非上市果数 (主要是蒂腐果 )的增加所致 ;控制环境 ,抑制蒸腾 ,上市的鲜重生产效率仅降低 3 .4 % ,与单果重的降低一致。根部高盐分没有影响单果干重的积累 ,温室内蒸腾控制对果实干重积累的影响也甚微。这一结果表明 :温室内蒸腾控制与根部盐分控制对产量有同样的重要性。

Studies were carried out to investigate the outdoor air pollution levels in vehicular traffic junctions in the major cities of Nsukka, Enugu and semi-urban area of Awgu all in Enugu State, Nigeria using standard analytical procedures. Pm2.5 was collected using Envirotech air sampler, APM 550 and analyzed gravimetrically. Other determined air pollutant gases such as SO2, NO2, O3 and CO were analyzed using colorimetric techniques. The mean hourly traffic density in the vehicular traffic junctions in Nsukka metropolis, Enugu metropolis and Awgu were 2015, 2873 and 587 respectively. Anti-m<sub>3</sub>muscarinic Acetylcholine Receptor Antibodies in Systemic Lupus Erythematosus

Background: Evidences have shown that anti-m3 muscarinic acetylcholine receptor IgG (anti-m3 mAChR IgG) are clinically useful autoantibody that exert a cholinergic pharmacologic effect binding and interacting with m3 mAChR at the level of exocrine gland (salivary and ocular). Aims: The aim of this study was to determine the associations between serum level of anti-m3 mAChR IgG in patients with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) and other autoantibodies, serum prostaglandin E2 (PGE2), and clinical manifestations. methods: Serum autoantibodies against m3 mAChR synthetic peptide were measured by enzyme-linked immuno absorbent assay (ELISA) using, as an antigen, a 25-mer peptide K-R-T-V-P-D-N-Q-C-F-I-Q-F-L-S-N-P-A-V-T-F-G-T-A-I corresponding to the amino acid sequence of the second extracellular loop of the human m3 mAChR. Serum levels of antinuclear antibodies (ANA), anti-Smith (Sm) antibodies, anti-phospholipid (APL) antibodies, and PGE2 were determined by ELISA in patients with SLE. Results: We found significantly enhanced titers of anti-m3 mAChR IgG in sera from SLE patients compared with healthy individuals (control). In addition, serum levels of PGE2 were significantly higher in SLE patients than in control patients and were significantly higher in active than in non-active SLE. No correlation was found with other autoantibodies present in SLE. By contrast, a positive correlation was found between anti-m3 mAChR IgG and PGE2 serum levels in SLE. Conclusions: As anti-m3 mAChR antibodies present in the sera of SLE patients may be another factor in the pathogenesis of this disease, and the increment of PGE2 in the sera of SLE has a modulatory action on the inflammatory process, suggesting that the presence of these autoantibodies against m3 mAChR may contribute to sustained immune deregulation and the strong inflammatory component observed in SLE.
