Electroosmotic water vapor transport (WVT) across very thin, flexible, functionalized conducting polymer (CP) microporous (μP) membranes at a very high rate is reported. Both passive and active (6 VDC applied) WVT are reported, the latter for the first time ever. WVT occurs with concomitant, effective blocking of chemical warfare (CW) agents, again demonstrated for the first time ever. Initial active liquid||membrane||liquid interface studies demonstrated WVT rates of >1.7 × 10-5g .mm-2s-1, >3 × the highest prior reported values of 5 × ***-2s-1. Subsequent vapor||membrane|| vapor interface studies using industry-standard methods (including ASTm E96B Upright Cup (“WVT”), ASTm F2298 (“Dynamic moisture Permeation Cell”) and ASTm F1868 (“Sweating Guard Hotplate”) were done at independent, external labs for independent corroboration. These yielded, e.g., WVT values of2564.4 g.m2.d-1 (passive) and3706.7 g.m2d-1 (active), to be compared with the highest (passive) value ever reported previously,984.8 g.m2.d-1 for a μP-Nylon membrane. more than 15 different membrane configurations, porosities and types were studied, including membranes with CP + organophosphate hydrolase (OPH), an enzyme reactive to CW agents. Efficient blocking of the actual CW agents GB, HD, VX is also reported, using the TOP-8-2-501standard. membranes also passed all Industry-standard durability tests, e.g. ASTm D2261 (Tearing), ASTm D5034 (Breaking), ASTm D3886 (Abrasion), ASTm F392 (Gelbo Flex). Incorporation into smart soldiers’ garments was demonstrated;power consumption was -2. mechanisms of enhanced WVT and CW agent blocking in the membranes are discussed.

采用熔融淬冷法制备了新型远红外Te基硫系玻璃Ge20-xTe65Se15Snx(x=0,2,4)。在Ge-Te-Se玻璃的基础上,通过引入重金属Sn,研究其对玻璃组成、结构和性能的影响。测试了样品的中红外热成像、X射线衍射(XRD)图谱、差热分析曲线(DSC)、可见/近红外吸收光谱、红外透射光谱。利用经典的Tauc方程计算了样品的光学带隙,根据金属标准和能量带隙理论讨论了玻璃光学带隙与组分变化的关系。分析结果表明,Ge-Te-Se-Sn玻璃具有良好的热稳定性,随着Sn的引入,玻璃的光学带隙减小,短波吸收截止边发生红移,但玻璃的红外截止波长基本不变。此外Sn可以有效减弱Ge-O杂质吸收峰的强度,提高玻璃红外透射性能。

Objectives: The aims of this study was to analyze the immuno-virologic response after optimised background antiretroviral therapy (OBT) associated to new active antiretroviral treatment (ART) in HIV-1 infected patients with chronic virologic failure. methods: We conducted a descriptive analysis of the immuno-virologic responses in HIV-1 adult infected patients: 1) harbouring multiple therapeutic failures with ART;2) with no virologic response obtained over 10 years (1997-2008);and 3) treated with OBT combined with new drugs including at least 1 of the 3 active ART among darunavir/ritonavir, etravirine and raltegravir;4) observed between month 0 (m0), before new ART to month 12 (m12) after new ART initialisation. Results: Twenty three patients were included in the study. After OBT, the proportion of patients with undetectable viral load was significantly higher at m6 and m12 than m0 (86% and 73% versus 0%, p = 0.03, respectively). At the same period, the median HIV viral load decreased significantly in 19/23 (83%) patients from 4.3 to 1.69log10 HIV-1 RNA copies/ml (p 3 [0 - 604] to 449/mm3 [130 - 964] between m0 and m12 (p 3 decreased from 57% to 23% (p = 0.02). Tolerability was good and no death was recorded during the 12-month' follow-up. Conclusions: These results show that the combination of OBT with the new ART can offer a salvage therapy in patients presenting a long-term history of virologic failures.

Distribution of Prunus serotina Ehrh. in North America and Its Invasion in Europe

Black cherry (Prunus serotina Ehrh.) is a native North American plant species. It includes five subspecies and is currently invasive in Europe. Since pre-Hispanic times, black cherry has been known and used by American inhabitants, and its botanical use was reported in the 19th century. The present study describes the taxonomic richness and taxonomic diversity of the species based on data from 554 taxonomically confirmed collection sites. Additionally, 19 climatic parameters were used to estimate the current and future potential distribution patterns of black cherry applying a climate change model to North America and Europe. Regions of northeast mexico, northwestern mexico, the Great American Basin, and the mississippi River-Great Lakes region in the USA are shown as areas where taxa of P. serotina are present. The potential distribution model of black cherry in North America shows a continuous pattern starting in the Center of mexico and following both main mexican mountain ranges (Sierra madre Oriental and Sierra madre Occidental). The pattern extends following two different paths throughout northern mexico toward the Rocky mountains and the Appalachians in the USA. Based on the NOAA-CCm3 climatic change model, decreased rainfall in wetlands will result in changes in future patterns in America. When applied to Europe, our model shows more extensive regions and more accurately than previous estimations;thus, the current potential distribution of the species includes important areas in the western part of the continent. The potential effect of climate change on P. serotina distribution suggests new and wider areas of possible invasion of this species throughout the continent mainly in France, Germany, and Italy. We suggest take into account the whole American taxa included in this species in the end to study its potential invasion in Europe and establishing suitable control strategies.

Combination curcumin and vitamin E treatment attenuates diet-induced steatosis in Hfe-/-mice

AIm To investigate the synergistic hepato-protective properties of curcumin and vitamin E in an Hfe^(-/-)high calorie diet model of *** Hfe^(-/-)C57BL/6J mice were fed either a high calorie diet or a high calorie diet with 1 mg/g curcumin; 1.5 mg/g vitamin E; or combination of 1 mg/g curcumin + 1.5 mg/g vitamin E for 20 wk. Serum and liver tissue were collected at the completion of the experiment. Liver histology was graded by a pathologist for steatosis, inflammation and fibrosis. RNA and protein was extracted from liver tissue to examine gene and protein expression associated with fatty acid oxidation, mitochondrial biogenesis and oxidative stress *** Hfe^(-/-)mice fed the high calorie diet developed steatohepatitis and pericentral fibrosis. Combination treatment with curcumin and vitamin E resulted in a greater reduction of percent steatosis than either vitamin E or curcumin therapy alone. Serum alanine aminotransferase and non-alcoholic fatty liver disease(NAFLD) activity score were decreased following combination therapy with curcumin and vitamin E compared with high calorie diet alone. No changes were observed in inflammatory or fibrosis markers following treatment. Epididymal fat pad weights were significantly reduced following combination therapy, however total body weight and liver weight were unchanged. Combination therapy increased the m RNA expression of Adipo R2, Ppar-α, Cpt1 a, Nrf-1 and Tfb2 m suggesting enhanced fatty acid oxidation and mitochondrial biogenesis. In addition, combination treatment resulted in increased catalase activity in Hfe^(-/-)mice. CONCLUSION Combination curcumin and vitamin E treatment decreases liver injury in this steatohepatitis model, indicating that combination therapy may be of value in NAFLD.
