BACKGROUND Venous thromboembolism,which includes deep venous thrombosis and pulmonary embolism,is a well-known causal disorder with high morbidity and mortality *** or acquired conditions affecting components of coagulation and fibrinolysis systems have been linked to venous thromboembolism pathogenesis as they may lead to a pro-inflammatory state in human *** is a zoonosis that potentially leads to acute systemic cachectic-inflammatory effects in experimental animal models but is not yet proven in *** is known that venous thrombosis can occur during acute inflammatory/infectious diseases,although it is not well established with regard to toxoplasmosis *** SUMMARY A 70-year-old Caucasian man and his 32-year-old son developed general malaise,chills,fever,and myalgia,having established a diagnosis of *** days later,they presented dry cough leading to further investigations that revealed an incidental deep venous thrombosis plus pulmonary embolism in them *** screening showed both patients had a factor V Leiden mutation *** and son completely recovered without any sequalae after anticoagulant *** have not presented symptom recurrence of either medical disorder during 1 year of *** Toxoplasmosis may enhance the risk of venous thromboembolism in patients showing factor V Leiden mutation heterozygosis.

Chlorhexidine is widely used in dentistry to treat various gingival conditions. Its side effects are widely described. Histologically, the gingiva consists of a stratified squamous epithelium, with a predominance of keratinocytes, the latter being fundamental in healing processes. Thus, the objective of this in vitro study was to evaluate the effects of a new product with active oxygen (blue®m) on keratinocytes. Keratinocytes (HACAT) were incubated with different concentrations of blue®m (1, 10 and 100 μl/ml), and another well was used as a control, without the presence of mouthwash. BACKGROUND Acute decompensation(AD)of cirrhosis is related to systemic inflammation and elevated circulating *** this context,biomarkers of inflammation,such as calprotectin,may be of prognostic *** To evaluate serum calprotectin levels in patients hospitalized for complications of *** This is a prospective cohort study that included 200 subjects hospitalized for complications of cirrhosis,20 outpatients with stable cirrhosis,and 20 healthy *** calprotectin was measured by enzyme-linked immunosorbant *** Calprotectin levels were higher among groups with cirrhosis when compared to healthy *** median calprotectin was related to Child-Pugh C,ascites,and hepatic *** calprotectin was related to acute-on-chronic liver failure(ACLF)and infection in the bivariate,but not in multivariate *** was not associated with survival among patients with ACLF;however,in patients with AD without ACLF,higher calprotectin was associated with a lower 30-d survival,even after adjustment for chronic liver failure-consortium(CLIF-C)AD score.A high-risk group(CLIF-C AD score≥60 and calprotectin≥580 ng/mL)was identified,which had a 30-d survival(27.3%)similar to that of patients with grade 3 ACLF(23.3%).CONCLUSION Serum calprotectin is associated with prognosis in patients with AD without ACLF and may be useful in clinical practice to early identify patients with a very low short-term survival.

This study describes the phytochemical profile and antioxidant activity of an extract from the leaves of Pouteria caimito (Sapotaceae). The extract in ethanol was obtained by maceration at room temperature and subjected to the liquid-liquid partition to obtain fractions in hexane and ethyl acetate. Steroids, triterpenes, saponins, alkaloids and flavonoids were identified by the phytochemical prospection of extracts and fractions from the leaves. The analysis of the ethyl acetate fraction by UPLC-QTOF-MS allowed us to identify eight triterpenes, namely, euscaphic acid (1), hyptadienic acid (2), betulinic acid (3), oleanolic acid (4), ursolic acid (5), 3β-(O-p-coumaroyl)- alphitolic acid (6), 3β-(O-p-coumaroyl)-maslinic acid (7) and 3β-(O-p-coumaroyl)-2-hydroxy-urs-12-en-28-oic acid (8). The ethanol extract and ethyl acetate fraction presented total phenolic contents of 10.6 ± 0.1 and 11.4 ± 0.3 mg GAE g-1, respectively, and considerable antioxidant activity in the DPPH assay with EC50 values of 299.4 ± 1.5 and 391.8 ± 0.9 μg·ml-1, respectively.

Nine 3,3’-(arylmethylene)bis(2-hydroxynaphthalene-1,4-dione) derivatives were synthesized through the reaction between 2-hydroxy-1,4-naphthalen-1,4-dione and different aromatic alde-hydes in water applying ultrasonic irradiation for 5 min at room temperature and microwave irradiation for 15 min at 70°;C. Two of the nine derivatives, compounds 3-e and 3-i, obtained from 3-bromo-hydroxybenzaldehyde and 5-methylfuran-2-carbaldehyde, respectively, are previously unpublished. The structures of all compounds were established on the basis of their spectral data and mass analysis. The attractive features of this synthesis protocol include mild conditions, high atom-economy and excellent yields with the elimination of water as the only by-product.

Development of Active Films with Collagen Fiber and Polyvinyl Alcohol Mixture and Incorporation of Oregano and Rosemary Essential Oils in Their Matrix

The aim was to develop films with a new mixture of collagen fiber plus polyvinyl alcohol added of oregano or rosemary essential oils at different levels (0%, 2%, 4% and 6%), as well as to assess the antimicrobial activity, physical, optical, microstructure and molecular properties in the films. An interaction between the ingredients was observed at the molecular level by FTIR. The amide II and amide III bands, which are important to verify collagen conformation, showed intense peaks in the films. The formation of a network through collagen fibers was produced, acting as a reinforcement in matrix. The films with essential oil had an expressive antimicrobial activity by the steam contact method (micro-atmosphere), mainly for Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus. The mixture of collagen fiber plus polyvinyl alcohol added of essential oils is a promising matrix for application in food as active packaging.

Adenosquamous carcinoma of the head and neck (ASC) is a rare and aggressive variant of squamous cell carcinoma, a locally aggressive malignancy characterized by the presence of two distinct components: a squamous cell carcinoma and an adenocarcinoma. The purpose of this study was to report an additional rare case of adenosquamous carcinoma affecting the maxilla, with clinical microscopic features and a complex mid-facial rehabilitation.

The objective of this study was to evaluate the changes induced by isolated soy protein (ISP)-based diet on glycemia and oxidative stress biomarkers in diabetic rats. Fifteen male Wistar rats (35 ± 4 g, aged 21 days) were assigned to three groups: Casein (C group), which received casein-based diet during experimental protocol;Diabetic treated with Casein (D + C group) that received casein-based diet before and after diabetes induction;Diabetic treated with ISP (D + S group) that received casein-based diet before diabetes induction and after received ISP-based diet for the experimental protocol. Diabetes was induced by a single dose of streptozotocin (50 mg/kg body weight i.v.). After three weeks of dietary treatment, total nitrates, lipid peroxidation, antioxidant enzyme activities of superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT), glutathione-S-transferase (GST) were measured in heart homogenates. ISP-based diet promoted an improvement in the glycemic levels of diabetic rats compared with casein-based diet (362 ± 25 vs 461 ± 30 mg/dL). CAT activity demonstrated a significant decrease in D + C and D + S groups. D + S group presented a significant increase in SOD and GST activities. Lipid peroxidation was not different among experimental groups. The overall results suggested the potential benefits of ISP-based diet consumption to improve the life quality of diabetic patients.

New Sulfonamides Derived from Carvacrol: Compounds with High Antibacterial Activity against Resistant Staphylococcus aureus Strains

Nine new sulfonamides derived from carvacrol were prepared through a reaction between 4-hydroxy-2-isopropyl-5-methyl benzene sulfonyl chloride with various amines in excellent yields (76% - 92%). The sulfonamides were characterized using spectrometric and spectroscopic methods. Among these compounds, three derivatives showed excellent results in antibacterial activity against resistant S. aureus strains, with MIC values ranging from 3.9 to 62.50 ppm. The sulfonamide derivative of 4-methylaniline (SULF-1) had the best performance for all tested strains of bacteria (MIC = 3.9 to 15.62 ppm). Furthermore, the sulfonamide derivative of 4-fluoro aniline (SULF-3), which also presented promising results, was found to have a synergistic effect when combined with tetracycline and partial synergistic effect when combined with ampicillin, exhibiting an FIC index between 0.50 and 0.75. The sulfonamide derivative of 4-methylaniline had a synergistic effect in combination with erythromycin exhibiting an FIC index of 0.37. Carvacrol in association with the antibiotics tested did not have a synergistic effect.
