Modeling Plume-Rise of Air Emissions from Animal Housing Systems: Inverse AERMOD

As fate and transport of air emissions from animal housing systems is of increasing concern, dispersion models have become commonly used tools to estimate the downwind concentrations of pollutants at certain locations surrounding the animal production farms. In application of Gaussian dispersion model for downwind concentration predictions of animal housing emissions, unknown plume rise (△h) and plume shape of the horizontally emitted plumes from animal housing systems have been vital weak points challenging the accuracy of the model predictions. This paper reports an inverse AERMOD modeling study to derive the plum rises of PM10 emissions from mechanically ventilated egg production houses based upon field measurements of PM10 emission rate, downwind concentrations, and meteorological conditions. In total, 87 hourly plume rises were found for 20 days (five days per season for four seasons, from fall 2008 to summer 2009). The mean plume rises for fall 2008, winter 2008, spring 2009 and summer 2009 were 16.2 m (SE = 11.2 m), 7.9 m (SE = 9.5 m), 16.5 m (SE = 12.4 m), and 14.3 m (SE = 10.0 m), respectively. The relationships between plume rises and various factors were tested. While the diurnal patterns of the plume rises were not consistent among different selective days, they generally followed the diurnal patterns of house ventilation rates. Plume rise for weekends were significantly higher than those for weekdays in fall. Multiple linear regression showed a significant positive relationship (p = 0.0134) between wind speed and the plume rises. Ambient relative humidity and total volume flow were also found to be slightly (p = 0.171 and 0.217, respectively) related to the plume rises.

Aims:The long-term effects of changing fire regimes on the herbaceous component of savannas are poorly understood but essential for understanding savanna *** present results from one of the longest running(>44 years)fire experiments in savannas,the experimental burn plots(EBPs),which is located in the Kruger National Park(South Africa)and encompasses four major savanna vegetation types that span broad spatial gradients of rainfall(450–700 mm)and soil ***:Herbaceous vegetation was sampled twice in the EBPs using a modified step-point method,once prior to initiation of the experiment(1954)and again after 44–47 *** combinations of three fire frequency(1-,2-and 3-year return intervals)and five season(before the first spring rains,after the first spring rains,mid-summer,late summer and autumn)treatments,as well as a fire exclusion treatment,were applied at the plot level(;7 ha each),with each treatment(n=12 total)replicated four times at each of the four sites(n=192 plots total).The effects of long-term alterations to the fire regime on grass community structure and composition were analyzed separately for each *** findings:Over the 44+years duration of the experiment,fires were consistently more intense on sites with higher mean annual rainfall(>570 mm),whereas fires were not as intense or consistent for sites with lower and more variable rainfall(f herbivory along with more variable rainfall regimes likely minimized the effects of fire for the more arid *** a consequence,fire effects on grass community structure and composition were most marked for the higher rainfall sites and generally not significant for the more arid *** the high-rainfall sites,frequent dry season fires(1-to 3-year return intervals)resulted in high grass richness,evenness and diversity,whereas fire exclusion and growing se

AIM:To evaluate the suitability of reference genes in gastric tissue samples and cell ***:The suitability of genes ACTB,B2M,GAPDH,RPL29,and 18S rRNA was assessed in21 matched pairs of neoplastic and adjacent nonneoplastic gastric tissues from patients with gastric adenocarcinoma,27 normal gastric tissues from patients without cancer,and 4 cell lines using reverse transcription quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction(RT-qPCR).The ranking of the best single and combination of reference genes was determined by Normfinder,geNorm,BestKeeper,and *** addition,GenEx software was used to determine the optimal number of reference *** validate the results,the mRNA expression of a target gene,DNMT1,was quantified using the different reference gene combinations suggested by the various software packages for ***:ACTB was the best reference gene for all gastric tissues,cell lines and all gastric tissues plus cell ***+B2M or ACTB+B2M was the best combination of reference genes for all the gastric *** the other hand,ACTB+B2M was the best combination for all the cell lines tested and was also the best combination for analyses involving all the gastric tissues plus cell *** to the GenEx software,2 or 3 genes were the optimal number of references genes for all the gastric *** relative quantification of DNMT1 showed similar patterns when normalized by each combination of reference *** level of expression of DNMT1 in neoplastic,adjacent non-neoplastic and normal gastric tissues did not differ when these samples were normalized using GAPDH+B2M(P=0.32),ACTB+B2M(P=0.61),or GAPDH+B2M+ACTB(P=0.44).CONCLUSION:GAPDH+B2M or ACTB+B2M is the best combination of reference gene for all the gastric tissues,and ACTB+B2M is the best combination for the cell lines tested.

Combined pars plana vitrectomy and Baerveldt glaucoma implant placement for refractory glaucoma

AIMTo evaluate outcomes of combined pars plana vitrectomy and Baerveldt glaucoma implant (PPV-BGI) placement for refractory *** medical records of 92 eyes (89 patients) that underwent PPV-BGI were retrospectively reviewed, including 43 eyes with neovascular glaucoma (NVG) and 49 eyes with other types of glaucoma (non-NVG).RESULTSOutcome measures were visual acuity (VA), intraocular pressure (IOP), glaucoma medical therapy, complications, and success [VA>hand motions (HM), IOP≥6 mm Hg and ≤21 mm Hg, no subsequent glaucoma surgery]. Cumulative success rates for the non-NVG group and NVG group were 79% and 40% at 1y, respectively (P=0.038). No difference in the rates of surgical success were found between pars plana and anterior chamber tube placement. Preoperative IOP (mean±SD) was 30.3±11.7 mm Hg in the Non-NVG group and 40.0±10.6 mm Hg in the NVG group, and IOP was reduced to 15±9.5 mm Hg in the non-NVG group and 15±10.5 mm Hg in the NVG at 1y. Number of glaucoma medications (mean±SD) decreased from 2.7±1.3 in the non-NVG group and 2.8±1.3 in the NVG group preoperatively to 0.76±1.18 in the non-NVG group and 0.51±1.00 in the NVG group at 1y. Improvement in VA of ≥2 Snellen lines was observed in 25 (27%) eyes, although only 33% of non-NVG eyes and 2.3% of NVG eyes maintained VA better than 20/200 at 1y. Nonclearing vitreous hemorrhage was the most common postoperative complication occurring in 16 (17%) eyes, and postoperative suprachoroidal hemorrhages developed in 5 (5.4%) ***-BGI is a viable surgical option for eyes with refractory glaucoma, but visual outcomes are frequently poor because of ocular comorbidities, especially in eyes with NVG. The location of tube placement does not influence surgical outcome and should be left to the discretion of the surgeon.

Background: Motor competence and health-related fitness are important components for the development and maintenance of a healthy lifestyle in children. This study examined cross-cultural performances on motor competence and health-related fitness between Portuguese and ***: Portuguese(n = 508; 10.14 § 2.13 years, mean § SD) and U.S.(n = 710; 9.48 § 1.62 years) children performed tests of cardiorespiratory fitness(Progressive Aerobic Cardiovascular Endurance Run), upper body strength(handgrip), locomotor skill performance(standing long jump), and object projection skill performance(throwing and kicking). Portuguese and U.S. children were divided into 2 age groups(6à9 and 10à13 years) for data analysis purposes. A twoàfactor oneàway analysis of covariance(ANOVA) was conducted with the Progressive Aerobic Cardiovascular Endurance Run, handgrip, standing long jump scores, kicking, and throwing speed(km/h) as dependent ***: Results indicated that Portuguese children, irrespective of sex, presented better performances in locomotor and cardiorespiratory performance(standing long jump and Progressive Aerobic Cardiovascular Endurance Run) than U.S. children in both age bands. U.S. children outperformed Portuguese children during throwing and handgrip tests. Kicking tests presented gender differences: Portuguese boys and U.S. girls outperformed their internationally matched ***: Cultural differences in physical education curricula and sports participation may impact differences in motor competence and fitness development in these countries.

Responses of Soil Microbial Community Structure and Diversity to Agricultural Deintensification

Using a scheme of agricultural fields with progressively less intensive management (deintensification), different manage- ment practices in six agroecosystems located near Goldsboro, NC, USA were tested in a large-scale experiment, including two cash-grain cropping systems employing either tillage (CT) or no-tillage (NT), an organic farming system (OR), an integrated cropping system with animals (IN), a successional field (SU), and a plantation woodlot (WO). Microbial phos- pholipid fatty acid (PLfA) profiles and substrate utilization patterns (BIOLOG ECO plates) were measured to examine the effects of deintensification on the structure and diversity of soil microbial communities. Principle component analyses of PLfA and BIOLOG data showed that the microbial community structure diverged among the soils of the six systems. Lower microbial diversity was found in lowly managed ecosystem than that in intensive and moderately managed agro- ecosystems, and both fungal contribution to the total identified PLfAs and the ratio of microbial biomass C/N increased along with agricultural deintensification. Significantly higher ratios of C/N (P found in the WO and SU systems, and for fungal/bacterial PLfAs in the WO system (P ficant decreases (P fication for contributions of total bacterial and gram positive (G+) bacterial PLfAs. Agricultural deintensification could facilitate the development of microbial communities that favor soil fungi over bacteria.
