Phylogenetically Distinct Cellulose Synthase Genes Support Secondary Wall Thickening in Arabidopsis Shoot Trichomes and Cotton fiber

Through exploring potential analogies between cotton seed trichomes （or cotton fiber） and arabidopsis shoot trichomes we discovered that CesAs from either the primary or secondary wall phylogenetic clades can support secondary wall thickening. CesA genes that typically support primary wall synthesis, AtCesA 1,2,3,5, and 6, underpin expansion and secondary wall thickening of arabidopsis shoot trichomes. In contrast, apparent orthologs of CesA genes that support secondary wall synthesis in arabidopsis xylem, AtCesA4,7, and 8, are up-regulated for cotton fiber secondary wall deposition. These conclusions arose from：（a） analyzing the expression of CesA genes in arabidopsis shoot trichomes; （b） observing birefringent secondary walls in arabidopsis shoot trichomes with mutations in AtCesA4, 7, or 8; （c） assaying up-regulated genes during different stages of cotton fiber development; and （d） comparing genes that were *** with primary or secondary wall CesAs in arabidopsis with genes up- regulated in arabidopsis trichomes, arabidopsis secondary xylem, or cotton fiber during primary or secondary wall deposition. Cumulatively, the data show that：（a） the xylem of arabidopsis provides the best model for secondary wall cellulose synthesis in cotton fiber; and （b） CesA genes within a ＂cell wall toolbox＂ are used in diverse ways for the construction of particular specialized cell walls.

The association between sexual function and prostate cancer risk in US veterans

Sexual dysfunction and prostate cancer are common among older men. few studies explored the association between these two illnesses. We examined whether sexual function is associated with prostate cancer risk among older men. Among 448 men undergoing prostate biopsy at the Durham Veterans Affairs Hospital, sexual function was ascertained from the Expanded Prostate Cancer Index Composite sexual assessment. We tested the link between sexual function and prostate cancer risk adjusting for multiple demographic and clinical characteristics using logistic regression. Multinomial logistic regression was used to test the associations with risk of low-grade （Gleason 〈6） and high-grade （Gleason 〉7 or 〉4 ＋ 3） disease versus no cancer. Of 448 men, 209 （47%） had a positive biopsy; these men were less likely to be white （43% vs 55%, P=0.013）, had higher prostate-specific antigen （PSA）（6.0 vs 5.4 ng ml-1, P 〈 0.001）, but with lower mean sexual function score （47 vs 54, P = 0.007）. There was no difference in age, BMI, pack years smoked, history of heart disease and/or diabetes. After adjusting for baseline differences, sexual function was linked with a decreased risk of overall prostate cancer risk （OR. 0.91 per lO-point change in sexual function, P= 0.004） and high-grade disease whether defined as Gleason ≥7 （OR： 0.86, P= 0.001） or 〉4 ＋ 3 （OR： 0.85, P= 0.009）. Sexual function was unrelated to low-grade prostate cancer （OR： 0.94, P = 0.13）. Thus, among men undergoing prostate biopsy, higher sexual function was associated with a decreased risk of overall and high-grade prostate cancer. Confirmatory studies are needed.

Man-made environments such as tropical hydroelectric reservoirs alter the preexisting carbon (C) cycle and remove C from circulation through burial in sediments. Phytosociology and floristic Composition of the Infesting Community in Rice Crop Waterlogged

The objective of this study is to identify and quantify the floristic composition of the weed community in the rice crop waterlogged in the municipality of Arari-MA. The botanical material was obtained in three areas by randomly a hollow rectangle of 0.50 m × 0.30 m by forty five times in each plot. The aerial parts of weeds were harvested, identified, counted and oven dried with forced air ventilation at 333.15 K to 343.15 K. These data were used to determine the phytosociological parameters and the Shannon-Wiener diversity index was also calculated. A total of 6607 plants were collected, being 4115 (62.28%) in the vegetative phase and 2492 (37.72%) in the reproductive phase. The monocotyledonous group obtained the largest number of plants, 2882 in the vegetative phase and 1535 in the reproductive phase. The Cyperaceae family recorded nine species and four genera and the Poaceae, seven and four species in the vegetative and reproductive phases, respectively. The species of higher IVI in the vegetative phase was E. sellowiana in the area A1 with 82.86%, and in the reproductive f. dichotoma with IVI of 90.49% in the area A3. The individuals density and species richness were higher in the vegetative phase of the culture and the monocotyledonous group predominated with the Cyperaceae and Poaceae families, and the weed diversity among the areas was low.

Grid-Connected Emergency Back-Up Power Supply

This paper documents design and modeling of a grid-connected emergency back-up power supply for medium power applications. Back-up power supplies are very important in regard to support electrical loads in the events of grid power outage. However, grid-integration of a back-up power supply substantiates continual power transfer to the loads, especially to the critical loads, which should not suffer from power interruptions. Therefore, design and circuit modeling of switching converters based reliable grid-tied emergency back-up power supply are presented in this paper. There are a rectifier-link boost derived battery charging circuit and a 4-switch push-pull power inverter circuit which are controlled by high frequency pulse width modulation (PWM) signals. This paper presents a state averaging model and Laplace domain transfer function of the charging circuit and a switching converter model of the power inverter circuit. A changeover relay based transfer switch controls the power flow towards the utility loads. During off-grid situations, loads are fed power by the proposed inverter circuit and during on-grid situations, battery is charged by an ac-link rectifier-fed boost converter. However, there is a relay switching circuit to control the charging phenomenon of the battery. The proposed design is simulated in PLECS and the simulation results corroborate the reliability of the presented framework.

Purpose:The aim of the present study was to assess both the credibility and strength of evidence arising from systematic reviews with meta-analyses of observational studies on handgrip strength and health ***:An umbrella review of systematic reviews with meta-analyses of observational studies was *** assessed meta-analyses of observational studies based on random-effect summary effect sizes and their p values,95%prediction intervals,heterogeneity,small-study effects,and excess *** graded the evidence from convincing(Class I)to weak(Class IV).Results:from 504 articles returned in a search of the literature,8 systematic reviews were included in our review,with a total of 11 ***,nine of the 11 of the outcomes reported nominally significant summary results(pf the more stringent p value(pfidence interval(95%CI):0.670.78),(2)cardiovascular death risk in mixed populations(n=15 studies;relative risk=0.84,95%CI:0.780.91),and(3)incidence of disability(n=7 studies;relative risk=0.76,95%CI:0.660.87).Conclusion:The present results show that handgrip strength is a useful indicator for general health status and specifically for early all-cause and cardiovascular mortality,as well as *** further inform intervention strategies,future research is now required to fully understand mechanisms linking handgrip strength scores to these health outcomes.

Measurements and Visualization of the fluid field of the Plume from an Animal Housing Ventilation fan

Various dispersion models have been developed to simulate the fate and transport of air emissions from animal housing systems to meet the increasing need for knowledge in this area. However, the accuracy of the models may be challenged due to the unknown plume rise and plume shape. This paper reports a combination of theoretical and field study of the plum rise and shape of air flow from a ventilation fan commonly used in mechanically ventilated animal houses. The theoretical modeling of the plume shape was conducted using a commercial Computational fluid Dynamics (CfD) package named floEfD;the field measurements of the plume field was conducted using five 3D ultrasonic anemometers to simultaneously measure the air flow in the plume at various locations (four heights and five downwind distances). The TECPLOT package was used to visualize the plume flow field based upon anemometer measurements. While the plume shapes were found to be left-shifted by the CfD model and TECPLOT visualization, the magnitudes of the 3D wind velocities from field measurement were found to be significantly larger than those from CfD model. The plume field measurements indicated that the plume of a 0.6 m (24-inch) ventilation fan had a depth about 9 m, a width about ±6 m, and a rise (lifting) beyond the highest measurement point, 4.88 m (16 ft).

Modeling Plume-Rise of Air Emissions from Animal Housing Systems: Inverse AERMOD

As fate and transport of air emissions from animal housing systems is of increasing concern, dispersion models have become commonly used tools to estimate the downwind concentrations of pollutants at certain locations surrounding the animal production farms. In application of Gaussian dispersion model for downwind concentration predictions of animal housing emissions, unknown plume rise (△h) and plume shape of the horizontally emitted plumes from animal housing systems have been vital weak points challenging the accuracy of the model predictions. This paper reports an inverse AERMOD modeling study to derive the plum rises of PM10 emissions from mechanically ventilated egg production houses based upon field measurements of PM10 emission rate, downwind concentrations, and meteorological conditions. In total, 87 hourly plume rises were found for 20 days (five days per season for four seasons, from fall 2008 to summer 2009). The mean plume rises for fall 2008, winter 2008, spring 2009 and summer 2009 were 16.2 m (SE = 11.2 m), 7.9 m (SE = 9.5 m), 16.5 m (SE = 12.4 m), and 14.3 m (SE = 10.0 m), respectively. The relationships between plume rises and various factors were tested. While the diurnal patterns of the plume rises were not consistent among different selective days, they generally followed the diurnal patterns of house ventilation rates. Plume rise for weekends were significantly higher than those for weekdays in fall. Multiple linear regression showed a significant positive relationship (p = 0.0134) between wind speed and the plume rises. Ambient relative humidity and total volume flow were also found to be slightly (p = 0.171 and 0.217, respectively) related to the plume rises.
