Frequency and distribution of neglected tropical diseases in Mozambique:a systematic review

Ecological immunology: do sexual attraction and immunity trade-off through a desaturase?

Given the limited availability of resources in nature, sexual attractiveness may trade off with immunocompetence, as the immunocompetence handicap hypothesis (ICHH) posits. In invertebrates, a direct link between trade-offs through hormonal/molecular effectors in sexual signals and immunity has not been found so far. Here, we assessed how variation in sexual signals affected parasite infection in two sex pheromone selected lines of the moth Chloridea virescens: an attractive line with a low ratio of 16:Ald/Z11-16:Ald and an unattractive line with a high ratio. When infecting these lines with an apicomplexan parasite, we found that the attractive Low line was significantly more susceptible to the parasite infection than the unattractive High line. Since the ratio difference between these two lines is determined by a delta-11-desturase, we hypothesized that this desaturase may have a dual role, i.e., in the quality of the sexual signal as well as an involvement in immune response, comparable to testosterone in vertebrates. However, when we used CRISPR/cas9 to knockout delta-11-desturase in the attractive Low line, we found that the pheromonal phenotype did change to that of the High line, but the infection susceptibility did not. Notably, when checking the genomic location of delta-11-desaturase in the C. virescens, we found that mucin is adjacent to delta-11-desaturase. When comparing the mucin sequences in both lines, we found four nonsynonymous SNPs in the coding sequence, as well as intronic variation between the two lines. These differences suggest that genetic hitchhiking may explain the variation in susceptibility to parasitic infection.

Selectivity in feeding preferences and ranging patterns in spider monkeys Ateles geoffroyi yucatanensis of northeastern Yucatan peninsula, Mexico

The spider monkey, a fruit specialist and important seed dispersal agent in the Neotropics, is an endangered primate due to habitat loss, hunting and the pet trade. Spider monkeys have been the subject of a few studies in Central and South Ame- rica, but little is known about the diet and ranging for this primate in southern Mexico. Here we report the results of a six-month long study （October 2010 to March 2011） of the feeding preferences and ranging patterns of the Yucatan spider monkey Ateles geoffroyi yucatanensis living in the ＂Ya＇ax＇che＂ reserve by the Caribbean coast in northeast Yucatan peninsula. Focal animal and scan sampling as well as GPS tracking were used to document spider monkey feeding behavior, location of food trees and ranging in the reserve. The spider monkeys used 36 species of plants （94% trees; n = 432） and six non tree morphospecies as a source of food. Six tree species accounted for 〉~80% of total feeding time and for 74% of all trees used. Fruits accounted for 59% of total feeding time, followed by leaves （35%）, palm piths （5%） and other plant parts （1%）. Total range used by the monkeys was esti- mated at 43% of semievergreen rainforest habitat available （ca 40ha）. Range use was not random with segments showing light, moderate and heavy use; the use of different areas of their range varied monthly and was closely linked to the spatial dispersion of the trees used for food [Current Zoology 59 （1）： 125-134, 2013].

BACKGROUND Equations for estimation glomerular filtration rate(eGFR)have been associated with poor clinical performance and their clinical accuracy and reliability have been called into *** To assess the longitudinal changes in measured glomerular filtration rate(mGFR)in patients with autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease(ADPKD).METHODS Analysis of an ambispective data base conducted on consecutive patients diagnosed with *** mGFR was assessed by iohexol clearance;while eGFR was calculated by three different formulas:(1)The chronic kidney disease epidemiology collaboration(CKD-EPI);(2)Modification of diet in renal disease(MDRD);and(3)The 24-hour urine creatinine clearance(CrCl).The primary end-points were the mean change in mGFR between the baseline and final visit,as well as the comparison of the mean change in mGFR with the change estimated by the different *** Thirty-seven patients were included in the *** compared to baseline,month-6 mGFR was significantly decrease by-4.4 mL/minute±10.3 mL/minute(P=0.0132).However,the CKD-EPI,MDRD,and CrCl formulas underestimated this change by 48.3%,89.0%,and 45.8%respectively,though none of these differences reached statistical significance(P=0.3647;P=0.0505;and P=0.736,respectively).The discrepancies between measured and estimated glomerular filtration rate values,as evaluated by CKD-EPI(r=0.29,P=0.086);MDRD(r=0.19,P=0.272);and CrCl(r=0.09,P=0.683),were not correlated with baseline mGFR *** This study indicated that eGFR inaccurately reflects the decline in mGFR and cannot reliably track changes over *** poses significant challenges for clinical decision-making,particularly in treatment strategies.

GRID-INDEPENDENT CONSTRUCTION OF MULTISTEP METHODS

A new polynomial formulation of variable step size linear multistep methods is pre- sented, where each k-step method is characterized by a fixed set of k - 1 or k parameters. This construction includes all methods of maximal order （p = k for stiff, and p = k ＋ 1 for nonstiff problems）. Supporting time step adaptivity by construction, the new formulation is not based on extending classical fixed step size methods; instead classical methods are obtained as fixed step size restrictions within a unified framework. The methods are imple- mented in MATLAB, with local error estimation and a wide range of step size controllers. This provides a platform for investigating and comparing different multistep method in realistic operational conditions. Computational experiments show that the new multi- step method construction and implementation compares favorably to existing software, although variable order has not yet been included.

One potential drawback of compost-based passive bioreactors,which is a promising biotechnology for acid mine drainage（AMD） treatment,is the transport of dissolved organic matter（DOM）-metal complexes in surface *** address this problem,the objective of this study was to assess the maximum capacity of organic substrates to release soluble DOM-metal complexes in treated water. Investigation on directional effects of Vrancea subcrustal earthquakes

This paper evaluates possible directional effects from strong ground motions recorded during the last four significant subcrustal earthquakes produced in the Vrancea seismic zone（Romania） in August 1986（Mw=7.1）,May 1990（Mw=6.9 and 6.4） and October 2004（Mw=6.0）.Several measures of the horizontal component of the ground motion given in the literature（Boore et al.,2006;Boore,2010） are computed and are related to the geometric mean of the as-recorded horizontal *** method is applied in order to quantify the influence of the earthquake magnitude and of the soil class on some strong ground motion parameters（*** intensity,PGV/PGA,or mean period TM）.The study of the directional effects is performed using the distribution of IJMAand of the rotation angle corresponding to a measure of the horizontal component of the ground motion（RotD 100） and the results reveal a visible directional pattern for IJMA,while in the case of RotD100 the directional patterns are less visible.
