Aging can be interpreted as an unavoidable process whose end point is the death. Aging entails, in the hemostasis field, some changes that favour blood hypercoagulability. Both the plasminogen activator inhibitor (PAI-1), specific inhibitor of the tissue plasminogen activator (t-PA), accompanied by the oxidative stress and the marked decrease of the main antioxidant—glutathione are fundamental in the bases of elderly pathologies which can cause death. There is some scientific evidence of the relationship between aging, neuro-degenerative diseases, an excessive production of reactive oxygen species and the decrease of proteolysis in brain. The cerebral plasminogen/plasmin system represents the essential proteolytic mechanism that degrades amyloid peptides (β-amyloidosis) for action of plasmin with effectiveness. This physiologic process is being considered as a preventive neurodegenerative mechanism. At the same time, the decrease of glutathione levels in aging entails a decrease of cerebral plasmin activity and a progressive descent of t-PA activity due to a descent in t-PA expression and an increase in PAI production. All of them entail an increment of amyloid beta peptides (Aβ) production and a lower level of their clearance. Both mechanisms, oxidative stress, direct consequence of the oxygenate metabolism of aerobics cells, and changes in the systemic fibrinolysis and cerebral b-amyloidolytic activity, play a very important role in thromboembolic disease, metabolic syndrome—obesity, insulin resistance, hyperglycemia—, type 2 Diabetes Mellitus and Alzheimer’s disease, clinical processes that accompany the aging. Water represents a critical nutrient, the absence of which will be lethal within days. Water’s importance for the prevention of nutrition-related noncommunicable diseases has received more attention recently. There are major gaps in knowledge related to the measurement of total fluid intake and hydration status at the population level. It is poorly understood the effects of chronic mild dehydration and fluid consumption on specific health outcomes including obesity. Urolithiasis is the only disorder that has been consistently associated with chronic low daily water intake. Water is an essential nutrient required for life, but until now, it was considered mainly as a universal solvent, which served to prepare the broth of life inside the cells, but the function of water now takes unusual importance with our discovery of the unsuspected ability of the human body to transform the power of light into chemical energy by dissociating the molecule from water, as it happens in plants. The process that we replicated in the laboratory for the first time in 2007, represents a light at the end of the tunnel, in the growing and serious problem of contamination of the mysterious and vital liquid that we call water.

Vaccines and recommendations for their use in inflammatory bowel disease

The patient with inflammatory bowel disease will be predisposed to numerous infections due their immune status. It is therefore important to understand the immune and serologic status at diagnosis and to put the patient into an adapted vaccination program. This program would be applied differently according to two patient groups: the immunocompromised and the non-immunocom-promised. In general, the first group would avoid the use of live-virus vaccines, and in all cases, inflammatory bowel disease treatment would take precedence over vaccine risk. It is important to individualize vaccination schedules according to the type of patient, the treatment used and the disease *** addition, patient with inflammatory bowel disease should be considered for the following vaccines: varicella vaccine, human papilloma virus, influenza, pneumococcal polysaccharide vaccine and hepatitis B vaccine.

Serratia marcescens has been recognized as an important cause of nosocomial and community-acquired infections. To our knowledge, we describe the first case of S. marcescens rhabdomyolysis, most probably related to acute cholecystitis and secondary bacteremia. The condition was successfully managed with levofloxacin. Keeping in mind the relevant morbidity and mortality associated with bacterial rhabdomyolysis, physicians should consider this possibility in patients with suspected or proven bacterial disease. We suggest S. marcescens should be regarded as a new causative agent of infectious rhabdomyolysis.

The Lower Cretaceous sediments of the Ceahlǎu Nappe （from the bend region of the Romanian Carpathians） were investigated from lithological and micropaleontological （calcareous nannoplankton） points of view. Our investigations revealed that the studied deposits were sedimented within the latest Tithonian-Albian interval. The calcareous nannofossil assemblages of the turbidite calcareous successions （the Sinaia Formation） were assigned to the NJK-？NC5 calcareous nannofossil zones, which cover the Late Tithonian-Early Barremian interval. The sandy-shaly turbidites, which followed the calcareous turbidites of the Sinaia Formation, are Early Barremian-Early Albian in age （interval covered by the ？NC5-NC8 calcareous nannofossil zones）. Because the studied deposited are mainly turbidites, many reworked nannofossils from older deposits are present in the calcareous nannofloras. Thus, some biozones （i.e., NC5）, defined based on the last occurrences of nannofossils, could not be identified. The calcareous nannofossil assemblages are composed of Tethyan taxa （which dominate the nannofloras） and cosmopolitan taxa. During two intervals （the Late Valanginian and across the Barremian/Aptian boundary）, Tethyan and cosmopolitan nannofossils, together with Boreal ones, were observed. This type of mixed calcareous nannoplankton assemblage is indicative for sea-level high-stand, which allows the nannofloral exchange between the Tethyan and Boreal realms, within the two-above mentioned intervals.

A simple method for the fabrication of ultrathin films containing low molecular weight dye material is introduced(post-adsorption technique). The chromophore used is 4-nitro-4'-decyloxy azobenzene quaternary ammonium salt (azo-10Q).In classical layer-by-layer (LBL) procedures, where the substrate is dipped alternately into the chromophore solution and thecomplementary polyelectrolyte, the chromophore tends to desorb from the film during subsequent immersion in thepolyanion solution, and there is little or no indication of multilayer growth. The extent of desorption depends somewhat onthe selection of polyelectrolyte, the ionic strength and the pH of solution. An alternative approach is to first prepareconventional LBL films from a pair of oppositely charged polyelectrolytes, and then to soak this film into the chromophoresolution, where adsorption by penetration into the LBL film may take place. In preliminary results, a linear dependence ofUV absorbance on layer number of LBL film thus prepared was found, demonstrating the apparent effectiveness of the post-adsorption technique for the preparation of azo-10Q-containing ultrathin films.

After natural or artificial insemination, the spermatozoon starts a journey from the site of deposition to the place of fertilization. However, only a small subset of the spermatozoa deposited achieves their goal： to reach and fertilize the egg. Factors involved in controlling sperm transport and fertilization include the female reproductive tract environment, cell-cell interactions, gene expression, and phenotypic sperm traits. Some of the significant determinants of fertilization are known （i.e., motility or DNA status）, but many sperm traits are still indecipherable. One example is the influence of sperm dimensions and shape upon transport within the female genital tract towards the oocyte. Biophysical associations between sperm size and motility may influence the progression of spermatozoa through the female reproductive tract, but uncertainties remain concerning how sperm morphology influences the fertilization process, and whether only the sperm dimensions per se are involved. Moreover, such explanations do not allow the possibility that the female tract is capable of distinguishing fertile spermatozoa on the basis of their morphology, as seems to be the case with biochemical, molecular, and genetic properties. This review focuses on the influence of sperm size and shape in evolution and their putative role in sperm transport and selection within the uterus and the ability to fertilize the oocyte.

The interaction of oviductal epithelial cells （OECs） with the spermatozoa has beneficial effects on the sperm functions. The aim of this study is to evaluate the in vitro fertilizing capacity of incubating spermatozoa previously selected by density gradient in OEC and determinate some sperm characteristics that could explain the results obtained. In this study, we assessed in vitro fertilization （IVF）, tyrosine phosphorylation, phosphatidylserine translocation, nuclear DNA fragmentation, and chromatin decondensation. Three experimental sperm groups, previously selected by Percoll gradient, were established according to the origin of the sperm used for IVF：（i） W30 group： spermatozoa were incubated with oocytes in the absence of OEC; （ii） NB group： after sperm incubation in OEC, the unbound spermatozoa were incubated with oocytes, in the absence of OEC; and （iii） B group： after sperm incubation with OEC, the bound spermatozoa were incubated with oocytes in the OEC plates. The results showed that sperm from the NB group led to a lower IVF yield, accompanied by low penetration rates （NB： 19.6%, B： 94.9%, and W30： 62.9%; P 〈 0.001） and problems of nuclear decondensation. Moreover, higher levels of tyrosine phosphorylation were observed in the NB group compared with the W30 and B groups （NB： 58.7%, B： 2.5%, and W30： 4.5%; P 〈 0.01）. A similar trend was observed in phosphatidylserine translocation （NB： 93.7%, B. 5.7%, and W30： 44.2%; P 〈 0.01）. These results demonstrate that the OEC exerts a rigorous degree of sperm selection, even within an already highly selected population of spermatozoa, and can capture the best functional spermatozoa for fertilization.
