Experimental Model for Biological Control of Stored Grain Pests

The insecticidal efficacy of the diatomaceous earth against granary weevil, Sitophilus granarius l. （Coleoptera： Curculionidae）, with two essential oils for the degree of repellent activity, was evaluated in an experimental model in laboratory tests. The diatomaceous earth was obtained from three Romanian sources （Patirlagele, Urloaia and Adamclisi） and was applied at four doses of 100, 300, 500 and 900 ppm （5, 15, 25 and 45 mg, respectively） on three replicates each variant. Mortality of S. granarius adults was estimated after 7, 14 and 21 d of exposure on treated grain. The insecticidal efficacy of the examined diatomaceous earth against the granary weevil was highly influenced by exposure time, dose and essential oil type. The longer exposure times increased weevil mortality in the case of low doses （100 ppm and 300 ppm）. After 60 d from the experiment initiation, the exposed grains from each variant were assessed about the progeny production. For the model proposed as bio-experiment, two essential oils in concentration of 80μl/l air and 125μl/l of Thymus vulgaris l. and Satureja hortensis l., respectively, were tested compared with untreated control in laboratory conditions. Both plant species belong to the family lamiaceae, and the major active insecticidal compound was thymol among other providing to terpenoid class, such as eugenol and linalool. The species S. granarius chosen for experimental model was grown in the Research-Development Institute of Plant Protection （RDIPP） Bucharest bio-base. The results show that mortality induced from diatomaceous earth was at the level between 83.33% and 100% in all variants after 21 d, compared with untreated control and a standard product Silicosec.

Insights into the Social Determinants of Health in Older Adults

In this paper, we review the social determinants of health in older adults and their complex interrelationship with medical diseases. Also, we provide recommendations to address these determinants in the integrated healthcare plan. The social determinants in older adults and its influence in health outcomes have been studied for decades. There is solid evidence for the interrelationship between social factors and the health of individuals and populations;however, these studies are unable to define their complex interrelatedness. Health is quite variable and depends on multiple biological and social factors such as genetics, country of origin, migrant status, etc. On the other hand, health status can affect social factors such as job or education. Addressing social determinants of health in the integrated healthcare plan is important for improving health outcomes and decreasing existing disparities in older adult health. We recommend a person-centered approach in which individualized interventions should be adopted by organizations to improve the health status of older adults at the national and global level. Some of our practical recommendations to better address the social determinants of health in clinical practice are EHR documentation strategies, screening tools, and the development of linkages to the world outside of the clinic and health system, including social services, community activities, collaborative work, and roles for insurance companies.

Physicochemical and Rheological Characterization of an Acidic Milk Product: Kefir Concentration Effect

The main objective of this study was the analysis of physicochemical and rheological behavior of a drinkable beverage prepared with different concentrations (5%, 10% and 20% w/w) of Kefir. Several rheological models were also evaluated to determine the model that better fit experimental data. Apparent viscosity was measured with a Brookfield Viscometer within shear rates of 0.26 rad/s to 2.09 rad/s; and with an Ar-2000ex TA Instruments Rheometer within shear rates of 0.01 rad/s to 1,000 rad/s. Physicochemical tests, such as titratable acidity, chloride percent, fat concentration, color, humidity, syneresis, and total solids, were determined using laboratory equipment. The main result observed in all samples tested with Brookfield viscometer was that Kefir drink behaved as a Newtonian Fluid within shorter strain rates (0.26 rad/s to 2.09 rad/s). However, when the same samples were tested with Ar-2000ex Rheometer, a different behavior was observed: Over a wider range of shear rates, the fully non-Newtonian behavior of Kefir samples was discovered. Besides, additional variables such as shear and normal stresses, and loss and storage modulus, were analyzed with Ar-2000ex Rheometer. The rheological model that better fitted the experimental data was Cross model, followed by Power law Model. Statistical analysis of viscosity data acquired with Brookfield Viscometer from all Kefir concentrations was not significant (p values greater than 0.05); which demonstrated that the effect of Kefir concentration over shorter strain rates was not significant, and thus, the samples behave as a Newtonian fluid. On the other hand, p values lower than 0.05 were observed in most of the different Kefir concentration samples tested with Ar-2000ex Rheometer; which indicates that a statistical significant effect was observed and thus a non-Newtonian behavior of Kefir samples. Uptake of prostate cancer screening and associated factors among Chinese men aged 50 or more: a population-based survey

Objective: To investigate the uptake rate of prostate specific antigen(PSA) testing among Hong Kong Chinese males aged 50 or above, and identify factors associated with the likelihood of undergoing a PSA ***: A population-based telephone survey was conducted in Hong Kong in 2007. The survey covered demographic information, perceived health status, use of complementary therapy, cancer screening behavior, perceived susceptibility to cancer and family history of cancer. Descriptive statistics, percentages and logistic regression analysis were used for data ***: A total of 1,002 men aged 50 or above took part in the study(response rate =67%), and the uptake rate of PSA testing was found to be 10%. Employment status, use of complementary therapy, perceiving regular visits to a doctor as good for health and the recommendations of health professionals were significant factors associated with PSA ***: The uptake rate of PSA testing in the study population was very low. Among all the factors identified, recommendations from health professionals had the strongest association with the uptake of PSA testing, and they should therefore take an active role in educating this population about cancer prevention and detection.

Contamination of Water for Domestic Use and Human Consumption by Heavy Metals Derived from Mining Activity in Parral, Chihuahua, Mexico

Research was done with the objective of evaluating the quality of water supplied to the potable water system in Hidalgo Del Parral, which comes from two main supply sources： wells from ＂Valle del Verano＂, which provide water to the east side of the city, and the Water Treatment Plant, which receives water from different mines and supplies the west side of the city. When this plant is overcome on its capacity of treatment, a part of the water from the mines is fed directly to the northwest part of the city. The metals lead （Pb）, chromium （Cr）, cadmium （Cd）, zinc （Zn）, and arsenic （As） were analyzed by atomic absorption （AA） technique, based on the United States Environmental Protection Agency （EPA） Method 7000B （Revision 2, February 2007）. The digestion process was done according to the guidelines established in Method NMX-AA-051-SCFI-2001, Analysis of Water-Determination of Metals by Atomic Absorption, developed by the National Standardization Technical Committee for Environmental Protection （Mexico）. The samples were collected from the following points： 13 wells and 2 re-pumping stations of ＂Valle del Verano＂, the inlet and outlet of the Water Treatment Plant, and domestic faucets. The east side of the city, supplied by the wells of ＂Valle del Verano＂, is metal-pollution free. The water that comes from the mines contains high concentrations of As, Zn, Cd and Pb, with levels that can get to 0.12, 32.6, 0.26 and 3.5 mg/l, respectively. This water pollution generated by mining can be concluded from the high levels found in the domestic samples in which, for several points, the concentrations exceed the parameters set by the current guideline. According to the results, it is vital to set a plan of remediation for the water that comes from the mines, because there is a great risk for health in the consumotion of this water.

Estimation of the carbon pool in soil and above-ground biomass within mangrove forests in Southeast Mexico using allometric equations

We report the results of carbon stored in soil and aboveground biomass from the most important area of mangroves in Mexico, with dominant vegetation of Red mangrove （Rhizophora mangle l.）, Black mangrove （Avicennia germinans l.）, white mangrove （laguncularia racemosa Gaertn.） and button mangrove （Conocarpus erectus l.）. We sampled soils with high fertility during the dry season in 2009 and 2010 at three sites on Atasta Peninsula, Campeche. We used allometric equations to estimate above ground biomass （AGB） of trees. AGB was higher in C. erectus （253.18±32.17 t？ha-1）, lower in A. germinans （161.93±12.63 t？ha-1）, and intermediate in R. mangle （181.70±16.58 t？ha-1） and l. racemosa （206.07±19.12 t？ha-1）. Of the three studied sites, the highest absolute value for AGB was 279.72 t？ha-1 in button mangrove forest at any single site. Carbon stored in soil at the three sites ranged from 36.80±10.27 to 235.77±66.11 t？ha-1. The Tukey test （p 〈0.05） made for AGB was higher for black mangrove showed significant differences in soil carbon content between black mangrove and button mangrove. C. erectus had higher AGB compared with the other species. A. germinans trees had lower AGB because they grew in hypersaline environments, which reduced their development. C. erectus grew on higher ground where soils were richer in nutrients. AGB tended to be low in areas near the sea and increased with distance from the coast. A. germinans usually grew on recently deposited sediments. We assumed that all sites have the same potential to store carbon in soil, and then we found that there were no significant differences in carbon content between the three samples sites： all sites had potential to store carbon for long periods. Carbon storage at the three sampling sites in the state of Campeche, Mexico, was higher than that reported for other locations.

Glucose and Insulin levels are Increased in Obese and Overweight Mothers’ Breast-Milk

Objective: To analyze the relationships between mothers’ pre-pregnancy body mass index (BMI) and levels of glucose and insulin in breast-milk. Methods: Participants were 32 breast-feeding mothers who were assigned to either normal weight (group 1: n = 21, BMI between 18.5 and 24.9 kg/m2) or overweight/obese (group 2: n = 11, BMI ≥ 25 kg/m2) based on their pre-pregnancy BMI. Breast-milk samples were collected at six weeks postpartum. Glucose and insulin concentrations were measured in the breast-milk samples. To control for any extreme dietary influences on breast-milk glucose concentrations, mothers completed 24-hour food recalls. Results: Mean milk-glucose values of groups 1 and 2 were 32.6 ± 21.8 mg/dl and 51.9 ± 20.5 mg/dl respectively. Milk-borne insulin values were 4.5 ± 7.6 μIU/ml and 30.1 ± 56.3 μ IU/ml, respectively. Independent-samples t tests found that glucose levels of group 2 were greater than those of group 1, t(30) = 2.43, p = 0.02;and milk-borne insulin was greater in group 2 than in group 1, t(30) = 2.075, p = 0.05. Mothers’ pre-pregnancy BMI was found correlated with both breast-milk glucose (r = 0.483, p = 0.005) and insulin (r = 0.565, p = 0.001). Conclusion: This study found that in comparison with normal weight mothers, over-weight/ obese mothers have higher concentrations of glucose and insulin in their breast-milk. Further studies are needed to explain the underlying mechanisms, and possible consequences of infant exposure to higher levels of glucose and insulin in breast-milk.

Relevant Frequency of Multiple Infections with High- and low-Risk HPV Genotypes among Mexican Women Attending a Tertiary Care Hospital

Aims: To assess the frequency and the main HPV genotypes circulating among a group of women attending at a third level Hospital in Mexico City. Methods: A cross-sectional and descriptive study was performed in a group of 143 female outpatients of the Gynecology and Obstetrics Service at the National Institute of Perinatology of Mexico. Cervical swabs were taken from participants and subjected to simultaneous detection/genotyping of HPV by linear Array Genotyping Test (Roche Molecular Systems). Mann-Whitney U, median and/or Square Chi tests were used to compare socio-demographical features between HPV-infected and uninfected women. Results: A total of 66 women (46.2%) had HPV infection. Overall, 112 genotypes were detected either as single infections (45.5%) or multiple genotype infections (54.5%). The cumulated frequency of multiple infections with high-/low- and high-/high-risk HPV genotypes was 63.9 %. The most frequent high-risk genotypes were HPV52 HPV58 and HPV51, whereas the most frequent low-risk genotypes were HPV6, HPV53 and HPV84. Infected women were significantly younger and have less stable partner relationships than uninfected women (p lusion: A relevant frequency of mixed infections with high- and low-risk HPV genotypes, other than those considered most prevalent worldwide, was observed. Most circulating high-risk genotypes among the women of this study are not covered by commercial vaccine formulations.

Participation of angiotensin II in chronic kidney diseases including diabetic nephropathy (DN) has been extensively described. Similarly, several studies support a protective role for angiotensin-(1-7). However, other studies suggest that some of the cellular effects of angiotensin-(1-7) may be deleterious. The objective of this study was to determine the role of exogenous angiotensin-(1-7) on renal hypertrophy development in rats with streptozotocin-induced diabetes. A control group and three groups of rats with streptozotocin-induced diabetes: untreated diabetic rats, diabetic rats treated with captopril, and diabetic rats treated with angiotensin-(1-7), were studied. After two weeks of treatment, the kidneys were removed under anesthesia with pentobarbital. The kidneys were weighed and the renal cortex was separated for analysis of AT1R, TGF-β1, MASR, and ACE2 expression by western blot. Rats in the three groups with diabetes had hyperglycemia, increased food and water consumption, and higher urinary volume than control rats. Treatment with captopril or angiotensin-(1-7) reversed streptozotocin-induced renal hypertrophy, measured by kidney weight, protein/DNA ratio in renal cortex, glomerular area, or proximal tubular cells area, proteinuria, and creatinine clearance reduction.
