Genetic diversity and relatedness inferred from microsatellite loci as a tool for broodstock management of fine flounder Paralichthys adspersus

Paralichthys adspersus is a native species from the Pacific coast of South America that is of great economic importance for Peruvian *** though establishing sustainable farming depends on avoiding irreversible damage to the population gene pool due to processes such as inbreeding,studies focusing on genetically characterizing farmed stocks are yet to be *** using ten microsatellite loci on captive and wild individuals of ***,we successfully characterized the only commercial broodstock of this species in Peru by means of determining the genetic diversity and inferring *** most microsatellite loci showed deviations from Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium,the genetic diversity levels in the commercial broodstock were considered healthy compared to those obtained for a wild population,with an average number of alleles of 17.40,an effective number of alleles of 9.14,and an observed and expected heterozygosity of 0.49 and *** significant differences between the broodstock and the wild population in terms of genetic diversity were *** fixation index and analysis of molecular variance also indicated a low rate of differentiation between both *** relatedness estimation,the analysis based on five method-of-moment estimators and a maximum-likelihood estimator showed the category“unrelated”as being the most probable relationship among the individuals within the commercial *** findings reveal the conservation of genetic diversity in this population and outline potential breeding strategies that hatchery managers could use to minimize the loss of genetic diversity and long-term *** could help establish proper genetic management in captive populations of *** and should apply to other captive stocks where pedigree information is lacking.

Background:The characterization of surface and canopy fuel loadings in fire-prone pine ecosystems is critical for understanding fire behavior and anticipating the most harmful ecological effects of ***,the joint consideration of both overstory and understory strata in burn severity assessments is often *** aim of this work was to assess the role of total,overstory and understory pre-fire aboveground biomass(AGB),estimated by means of airborne Light Detection and Ranging(LiDAR)and Landsat data,as drivers of burn severity in a megafire occurred in a pine ecosystem dominated by Pinus pinaster *** the western Mediterranean ***:Total and overstory AGB were more accurately estimated(R^(2) equal to 0.72 and 0.68,respectively)from LiDAR and spectral data than understory AGB(R^(2)=0.26).Density and height percentile LiDAR metrics for several strata were found to be important predictors of *** severity responded markedly and non-linearly to total(R^(2)=0.60)and overstory(R ^(2)=0.53)AGB,whereas the relationship with understory AGB was weaker(R ^(2)=0.21).Nevertheless,the overstory plus understory AGB contribution led to the highest ability to predict burn severity(RMSE=122.46 in dNBR scale),instead of the joint consideration as total AGB(RMSE=158.41).Conclusions:This study novelty evaluated the potential of pre-fire AGB,as a vegetation biophysical property derived from LiDAR,spectral and field plot inventory data,for predicting burn severity,separating the contri-bution of the fuel loads in the understory and overstory strata in Pinus pinaster *** evidenced relationships between burn severity and pre-fire AGB distribution in Pinus pinaster stands would allow the implementation of threshold criteria to support decision making in fuel treatments designed to minimize crown fire hazard.

Functional Analysis of Chemometric Data

The objective of this paper is to present a review of different calibration and classification methods for functional data in the context of chemometric applications. In chemometric, it is usual to measure certain parameters in terms of a set of spectrometric curves that are observed in a finite set of points (functional data). Although the predictor variable is clearly functional, this problem is usually solved by using multivariate calibration techniques that consider it as a finite set of variables associated with the observed points (wavelengths or times). But these explicative variables are highly correlated and it is therefore more informative to reconstruct first the true functional form of the predictor curves. Although it has been published in several articles related to the implementation of functional data analysis techniques in chemometric, their power to solve real problems is not yet well known. Because of this the extension of multivariate calibration techniques (linear regression, principal component regression and partial least squares) and classification methods (linear discriminant analysis and logistic regression) to the functional domain and some relevant chemometric applications are reviewed in this paper.

BACKGROUND The results obtained to date concerning food groups,diet quality and colorectal cancer(CRC)risk vary according to criteria used and the study *** To study the relationships between food groups,diet quality and CRC risk,in an adult population of the Basque Country(North of Spain).METHODS This observational study included 308 patients diagnosed with CRC and 308 ageand sex-matched subjects as *** recruitment,dietary,anthropometric,lifestyle,socioeconomic,demographic and health status information was *** to the dietary recommendations was evaluated utilizing the Healthy Eating Index for the Spanish Diet and the *** logistic regressions were used to evaluate the associations of food group intakes,diet quality scores,categorized in tertiles,with CRC *** The adjusted models for potential confounding factors showed a direct association between milk and dairy products consumption,in particular high-fat cheeses[odds ratio(OR)third tertile vs first tertile=1.87,95%confidence intervals(CI):1.11-3.16],and CRC *** the consumption of fiber-containing foods,especially whole grains(OR third tertile vs first tertile=0.62,95%CI:0.39-0.98),and fatty fish(OR third tertile vs first tertile=0.53,95%CI:0.27-0.99)was associated with a lower risk for ***,higher MD adherence was associated with a reduced CRC risk in adjusted models(OR third tertile vs first tertile=0.40,95%CI:0.20-0.80).CONCLUSION Direct associations were found for high-fat cheese,whereas an inverse relation was reported for fiber-containing foods and fatty fish,as well as adherence to a Mediterranean dietary pattern.

Given the interdependence of multiple factors in age-related vestibular loss (e.g., balance, vision,cognition), it is important to examine the individual contributions of these factors with ARVL. While therelationship between the vestibular and visual systems has been well studied (Bronstein et al., 2015),little is known about the association of the peripheral vestibular system with neurodegenerative disorders (Cronin et al., 2017). Further, emerging research developments implicate the vestibular system asan opportunity for examining brain function beyond balance, and into other areas, such as cognition andpsychological functioning. Additionally, the bidirectional impact of psychological functioning is understudied in ARVL. Recognition of ARVL as part of a multifaceted aging process will help guide thedevelopment of integrated interventions for patients who remain at risk for decline. In this review, wewill discuss a wide variety of characteristics of the peripheral vestibular system and ARVL, how it relatesto neurodegenerative diseases, and correlations between ARVL and balance, vision, cognitive, and psychological dysfunction. We also discuss clinical implications as well as future directions for research, withan emphasis on improving care for patients with ARVL.
