Facial nerve monitoring in parotid gland surgery:Design and feasibility assessment of a potential standardized technique

Background:Even though the use of nerve monitoring during parotid gland surgery is not the gold standard to prevent damage to the nerve,it surely offers some advantages over the traditional *** from thyroid surgery,where a series of steps in intraoperative nerve monitoring have been described to confirm not only the integrity but—most importantly—the function of the recurrent laryngeal nerve,in parotid gland surgery,a formal guideline to follow while dissecting the facial nerve has yet to be ***:A five‐year retrospective study was done reviewing the intraoperative records of patients who underwent parotid gland surgery under neural *** operative findings regarding the neuromonitoring process,particularly in regard to the amplitude of two main branches,were revised.A literature search was done to search for guidelines to follow when a facial nerve loss of signal is ***:Fifty‐five patients were operated on using the Nim 3 Nerve Monitoring system(Medtronic);31 were female patients,and 47 patients had benign *** changes were observed in the amplitude records after a comparison was made between the first and the last *** were only three articles discussing the term loss of signal during parotid gland ***:Today,no sufficient attention has been given to the facial nerve monitoring process during *** study proposes a formal guideline to follow during this procedure as well as an instruction to consider when a loss of signal is observed to develop a uniform technique of facial nerve stimulation.

Aims Understanding the factors that control biodiversity distributions at different spatial scales has been a key challenge for conservation *** biodiversity,reflected in differences in species compositions among sites(beta diversity),can be derived from species replacement(turnover)and is driven by multiple ***,we sought to tackle this issue through two questions related to threatened Brazilian seasonally dry forests:(i)what is the contribution of species turnover to beta diversity?and(ii)which factors drive variations in species compositions among forest patches?Methods We sampled tree species and environmental variables(soils and climate)in 17 dry forest patches spaced almost 300 km *** used the beta diversity partitioning framework to determine the contribution of *** used redundancy analysis,with properly controlled spatial structure,to assess the contributions of the environmental and spatial factors to the variations of the species *** Findings Beta diversity among the patches was mainly represented by the turnover component(98.2%),with simpson dissimilarity superior to other regions of the country(means of 0.89 and 0.71 in multiple site and pairwise measures,respectively).The environmental factors measured explained more than space,representing 30.3%of the variation of the species composition,of which 28.1%was nonspatially *** suggest that 300 km represents a threshold at which edaphic and climatic predictors have similar effects in determining community turnover(14.9%and 12.6%,respectively,without spatial structure).Thus,conservation strategies should be considered across landscapes to effectively protect tropical forest diversity,as even considering the different climatic aspects covered by the scale,landscaped edaphic varieties are important drivers of species turnover.

Two-tiered reconstruction of Late Pleistocene to Holocene changes in the freezing level height in the largest glacierized areas of the Colombian Andes

One way of deducing vertical shifts in the altitudinal distribution of Colombian high-altitude páramo environments is by inferring fluctuations in the height of the local freezing *** our research,we are implementing two complementary approaches to reconstruct Late Pleistocene to Holocene changes in the freezing level height(FLH)in two of the most extensively glacier-covered areas of the northern *** combined remote sensing and field-based geomorphological mapping with time-series reconstruction of changes in the altitude of the 0°C *** in the FLH were based on alreadypublished~30 kyr paleo-reconstructions of sea surface temperatures(ssTs)of the eastern tropical Pacific and the western tropical Atlantic,as well as on reconstructed long-term sea level changes and empirical orthogonal functions of present-day(historical)Indo-Pacific and tropical Atlantic ssT *** also analyzed the probability distribution of air-sea temperature differences and the spatial distribution of grid points with ssTs above the minimum threshold necessary to initiate deep *** considered available historical nearsurface and free air temperature data of ERA-Interim reanalysis products,General Circulation Model(GCM)simulations,weather stations,and(deployed by our group)digital sensors,to assess the normal Environmental Lapse Rates(ELRs)at the regional to local *** combined maps of glacial landforms and our reconstructed FLHs provided us with a wellfounded inference of potential past glacier advances,narrowing down the coarse resolution of ice margins suggested by previous research *** extent of the areas with temperatures below the freezing point suggested here for the summits of our main study site exceeds in magnitude the corresponding glacier icecaps and front advances proposed by previous ***,our average lowest altitudes of the FLH for our comparative site are consistently above the main glacier-front advances previously su

The importance of grain and cut-off size in shaping tree beta diversity along an elevational gradient in the northwest of Colombia

Background:species turnover(β-diversity)along elevational gradients is one of the most important concepts in plant ***,there is a lack of consensus about the main driving mechanisms of treeβ-diversity at local scales in very diverse ecosystems(e.g.,Andean mountains),as well as how the sampling effect can alterβ-diversity ***,it has been hypothesized that patterns of change inβ-diversity at local scales along elevational gradients are driven by sampling effects stemming from differences in the size of the species pool rather than by underlying community assembly ***,we aim to evaluate the relative extent to which sampling effects,such as species pool size,grain size,and tree size cut-off,determine species sorting,and thus,the variability ofβ-diversity at local scales along elevational gradients in the northwest of ***:Using 151-ha permanent plots spread out along a 3000m elevational gradient,we used standardizedβ-deviation to assess the extent to which either sampling effects or the community assembly mechanisms determine the changes in species composition at local ***β-deviation was measured as the difference between the observed and nullβ-diversity divided by the standard deviation of the nullβ-*** found that the magnitude of change in localβ-deviation along the elevational gradient was significant and dependent on the employed spatial grain size and tree size ***,β-deviation increased with elevation in all sampling designs,which suggests that underlying community assembly mechanisms play a key role in shaping localβ-diversity along the elevational ***:Our findings suggest that grain size enlargement and the inclusion of trees with small diameters will improve our ability to quantify the extent to which the community assembly mechanisms shape patterns ofβ-diversity along elevational ***,we emphasize the scale-dependent nature of the assessment o
