In this editorial I comment on the article by Ahmed et al published in a recent issue of the World J Orthop 2023;14:*** is well known that patients who have undergone a liver transplant(LT)may need to have a total hip arthroplasty(THA)or total knee arthroplasty(TKA)*** et al stated that the mortality rate in these patients was similar to the one of the general ***,there are three articles previously published that found higher mortality in LT patients who experienced THA/TKA than in the general population(individuals without LT).Therefore,in this Editorial I would like to point out that there is controversy in the literature regarding whether LT patients undergoing THA/TKA have higher mortality than the general ***,future research should attempt to resolve this controversy.

There is controversy in the literature on where to place the tourniquet(thigh,calf,ankle)for foot and ankle *** some authors prefer the ankle tourniquet to the calf tourniquet,others state that the surgeon can decide between using the thigh tourniquet or the ankle tourniquet,since there was no difference in postoperative pain between *** to place the tourniquet during foot and ankle surgery to cause the least possible postoperative pain to the patient as a result of the tourniquet is a common question in clinical *** reality is that,unfortunately,there is no consensus on this *** the only possible way to answer this question would be to conduct a comparative study with sufficient statistical power to reach scientifically sound *** does not seem easy to carry out such a study,but it would be important to be able to answer the question posed in the title of this Editorial once and for all.

The role of tropical forests in the global carbon budget remains controversial,as carbon emissions from deforestation are highly *** high uncertainty arises from the use of either fixed forest carbon stock density or maps generated from satellite-based optical reflectance with limited sensitivity to biomass to generate accurate estimates of emissions from *** space missions aiming to accurately map the carbon stock density rely on direct measurements of the spatial structures of forests using lidar and *** found that lost forests are special cases,and their spatial structures can be directly measured by combining archived data acquired before and after deforestation by space missions principally aimed at measuring ***,using biomass mapping,we obtained new estimates of carbon loss from deforestation ahead of forthcoming space ***,using a high-resolution map of forest loss and the synergy of radar and lidar to estimate the aboveground biomass density of forests,we found that deforestation in the 2000s in Latin America,one of the severely deforested regions,mainly occurred in forests with a significantly lower carbon stock density than typical mature forests.

Lesser kestrels Falco naumanni are migratory central-place foragers that breed in dynamic arable landscapes. After arriving from migration, kestrels have no knowledge of the distribution of crops, and consequently prey, around their colony. The energy demand of pairs increases as breeding season progresses, but at the same time prey abundance, and their knowledge on prey distribution, also increases. Wind can have a strong influence on flight cost and kestrels should try to reduce energy expendi- ture when possible. When prey abundance is low, kestrels have little knowledge of prey distribution, and pairs have no chicks, they could reduce foraging flight cost by leaving the colony with tailwinds. When prey is abundant, knowledge on prey distribu- tion has increased, and chick demand is high, kestrels should fly to the most favorable foraging patches. We analyzed foraging trips directions in a lesser kestrel colony along the breeding season and in relation to wind speed and direction. We recorded 664 foraging trips from 19 individuals using GPS-dataloggers. We found that outward flights direction changed from uniform to a concentrated distribution along the season, as prey abundance and individual experience increased. We also found a temporal trend in the angular difference between outward flights and wind directions, with low values early in the season and then increa- sing as expected, but again low values at the end, contrary to expectation. Results suggest changes in kestrels foraging strategy along the season in relation to wind. Kestrels depart more with tailwinds in exploratory flights early in the season, while there is a spurious coincidence in direction to preferred foraging patches and dominant wind direction at the end [Current Zoology 60 （5）： 604-615, 2014].

There are thousands of abandoned mine land(AML)sites in the *** need to be restored to reduce wind and water erosion,provide wildlife forage,shade streams,and improve *** created from woody biomass that would normally be burned in slash piles can be applied to soil to improve soil properties and is one method to restore AML soil productive *** this‘waste’biomass for biochar and reclamation activities will reduce wildfire risk,air pollution from burning,and particulates released from burning *** has the potential to improve water quality,bind heavy metals,or decrease toxic chemical concentrations,while improving soil health to establish sustainable plant cover,thereby preventing soil erosion,leaching,or other unintended,negative environmental *** forest residues to create biochar also helps reduce woody biomass and improves forest health and *** address concerns surrounding organic and inorganic contaminants on the biochar and how this might affect its’efficacy and provide valuable information to increase restoration activities on AMLs using biochar alone or in combination with other organic *** examples of AML biochar restoration sites initiated to evaluate short-and long-term above-and belowground ecosystem responses are presented.

AIM:To evaluate the effect of lid scrubbing using a gel combining different natural extracts on ocular signs and symptoms of dry eye ***:A retrospective study was performed on 19 dry eye patients(51.1±16.0y).Non-invasive tear break-up time,tear meniscus height,meibomian gland loss,lipid layer thickness,conjunctival redness,corneal staining,ocular surface disease index(OSDI),and ocular pain intensity were measured before(baseline),1wk,and 2mo after lid scrubbing with a gel containing different natural extracts(okra extract,aloe vera leaf juice,hydrolysed soy protein,caffeine,citrus unshiu peel extract,and raspberry seed oil).RESULTS:Compared with the baseline,there was a statistically significant improvement in both first(P=0.048)and average(P=0.026)non-invasive tear break-up time 2mo after treatment,as well as in corneal staining(P=0.043,0.012),OSDI(P<0.001),and ocular pain intensity(P<0.001)after 1wk and *** addition,there was no correlation between ocular signs and ***:The lid scrubbing with a gel combining different natural extracts show beneficial effects on tear film stability,corneal damage,and ocular symptoms,which is the reason why this therapeutic procedure is proposed as an alternative for dry eye ***,it is not possible to attribute this beneficial effect solely to the presence of the natural extracts in the gel,primarily due to the absence of a negative control group.

Endometriosis is a common disease in premenopausal women involving pelvic organs specially. Howeverendometriosis that affects the appendix is rarely seen except appendiceal endometriosis that mimics acute appendicitis. In a patient with acute appendicitis we diagnosed and operated on, histopathological examination of the appendix revealed appendiceal endometriosis which caused symptoms.

From the Schwarzschild metric we obtain the higher-order terms for the deflection of light around a massive object using the Lindstedt-Poincaré method to solve the equation of motion of a photon around the stellar object. The asymptotic series obtained by this method was obtained up to order 20 in the expansion parameter, and was found to better approximate the numerical solution with higher order terms—a property that can’t be taken for granted for any asymptotic series. Additionally, we obtain diagonal Padé approximants from the perturbation expansion, and we show how these are a better fit for the numerical data than the original formal Taylor series. Furthermore, we use these approximants in ray-tracing algorithms to model the bending of light around massive objects.

AIM To characterize esophageal endoluminal landmarks to permit radial and longitudinal esophageal orientation and accurate lesion *** Distance from the incisors and radial orientation were estimated for the main left bronchus and the left atrium landmarks in 207 consecutive patients using white light examination. A sub-study was also performed using white light followed by endoscopic ultrasound(EUS) in 25 consecutive patients to confirm the *** scope orientation throughout the exam was maintained at the natural axis,where the left esophageal quadrant corresponds to the area between 6 and 9 o'clock. When an anatomical landmark was identified, it was recorded with a photograph and its quadrant orientation and distance from the incisors were determined. The reference points to obtain the distances and radial orientation were as follows: the midpoint of the left main bronchus and the most intense pulsatile zone of the left atrium. With the video processor system set to moderate insufflation, measurements were obtained at the end of the patients' air *** The left main bronchus and left atrium esophageal landmarks were identified using white light in 99% and 100% of subjects at a mean distance of 25.8 cm(SD2.3), and 31.4 cm(SD 2.4) from the incisors, respectively. The left main bronchus landmark was found to be a tubular, concave, non-pulsatile, esophageal external compression, occupying approximately 1/4 of the circumference. The left atrium landmark was identified as a round, convex, pulsatile, esophageal external compression, occupying approximately 1/4 of the circumference. Both landmarks were identified using white light on the anterior esophageal quadrant. 目的反复喘息患者多为2岁以下的婴幼儿。在热带国家,对该人群住院期间接受呼吸支持治疗的风险的临床预测模型研究较少。该研究旨在评估就诊于哥伦比亚急诊科的反复喘息婴幼儿需要住院并接受呼吸支持治疗的临床预测因素。方法该研究是一项回顾性队列研究,纳入了2019年1~12月期间在哥伦比亚Rionegro的两个三级中心医院就诊的所有患有2次或2次以上喘息发作的婴幼儿(年龄均小于2岁)。主要结局指标是住院加呼吸支持治疗。采用多因素logistic回归模型确定需要住院并接受呼吸支持治疗的独立预测因素。结果共85名婴幼儿住院并接受呼吸支持治疗,其中34名(40%)予以高流量鼻导管吸氧,2名(2%)予以无创通气,6名(7%)予以机械通气,43名(51%)予以常规氧疗。多因素logistic回归模型分析显示,早产(OR=1.79,95%CI:1.04~3.10)、喂养困难(OR=2.22,95%CI:1.25~3.94)、鼻煽和/或咕噜声(OR=4.27,95%CI:2.41~7.56)和既往有1次以上喘息发作需要住院治疗(OR=3.36,95%CI:1.86~7.08)是需要住院并接受呼吸支持治疗的预测因素。该模型特异度高(99.6%),鉴别度中等,曲线下面积为0.70(95%CI:0.60~0.74)。结论该研究表明,早产、喂养困难、鼻煽和/或呼噜声,以及有1次以上需要住院治疗的喘息发作史,是急诊科就诊的反复喘息婴幼儿需要住院并接受呼吸支持治疗的独立预测因素。然而,还需收集更多的其他热带国家的证据来验证这个结论。
