Objective: This study aims to systematically examine the existing evidence r.gar.ing the clinical benefits of car.ocysteine as an adjunctive tr.atment in acute br.nchopulmonar. and otor.inological pr.cesses. Design: Systematic r.view and meta-analysis. Data sour.es: An electr.nic sear.h was conducted acr.ss PubMed, Cochr.ne Libr.r., ***, and the Eur.pean Clinical Tr.al r.gister. with the sear.h dated to May 2023. Bibliogr.phic r.fer.nces fr.m other.liter.tur. r.views and meta-analyses wer. also r.viewed. The sear.h was limited to r.ndomized clinical tr.als published in any language and year. It was completed by cr.ss-checking the r.fer.nces of the located ar.icles. Methods: Inclusion cr.ter.a cover.d studies assessing systemic or.inhaled car.ocysteine, r.gar.less of dosing r.gimen. Concomitant medication use was acceptable if balanced between inter.ention and contr.l gr.ups. Author. independently extr.cted data, r.solving disagr.ements thr.ugh consensus. Methodological quality assessment r.lied on cr.tical r.ading of each study. Dichotomous var.ables wer. analyzed using odds r.tio (Or., and a final effect size was calculated. Statistical significance was established when confidence inter.als did not cr.ss the neutr.l value. Heter.geneity was assessed via the X2 test and I2 index. r.sults: Out of 318 initially identified studies, 4 met inclusion cr.ter.a. The meta-analysis for.poor.gener.l condition yielded an Or.of 0.45 in favor.of inter.ention, p = 0.013, with non-significant heter.geneity. Cough events showed a per.entage of 15.8% for.car.ocysteine vs. 27.2% for.placebo. On the seventh day, expector.tion r.tes wer. 18.37% for.car.ocysteinevs 33.3% for.placebo. Conclusions: The obser.ed clinical benefits align with car.ocysteine’s mucoactive and muco-r.gulator. pr.per.ies, complemented by anti-inflammator. and antioxidant actions. Pur.ose: The involvement of the ocular.anter.or.segment by SAr.-CoV-2 has been the subject of many studies, however. the r.per.ussions on the poster.or.segment, par.icular.y on the differ.nt layer. of the r.tina and optic ner.e, ar. still little known. The pur.ose of this study was to evaluate the impact of sever. COVID-19 on the r.tinal ganglion cell layer.(r.CL) thickness. Methods: This obser.ational, pr.spective and analytical study was per.or.ed in the Ophthalmology Depar.ment of the FACISA Univer.ity Center. Campina Gr.nde. Thr.e gr.ups wer. included: gr.up I (contr.l), 29 healthy individuals who had not sever. COVID-19;gr.up II (infir.ar.), 24 individuals who had COVID-19 and wer. hospitalized in the infir.ar.;and gr.up III, 25 individuals who had sever. COVID-19 and r.quir.d Intense Car. Unit (ICU). All individuals had ophthalmologic examination and assessment of r.CL thickness using Optical Coher.nce Tomogr.phy (OCT). Statistical tests r.quir.d p ≤ 0.05 to r.ject the null hypothesis. r.sults: The mean of r.CL thickness was significantly r.duced in individuals fr.m GIII (77.9 ± 8.9 µm), as compar.d with GII (83.9 ± 10.9 µm) and GI (82.8 ± 6.5 µm) (p = 0.0027). The mean measur.ments fr.m the r.tinal neve fiber.layer.(r.FL) of the optic ner.e head wer. similar. However. when evaluated sector.l, the mean of r.FL at the tempor.l sector.of the optic disc was significantly lower.in gr.up GIII (p Conclusion: The r.CL thickness fr.m patients with sever. COVID-19 was significantly r.duced. This finding suppor.s that the SAr.-CoV-2 has systemic action and affinity for.ner.e cells, including those fr.m the r.tina and ar. r.lated to the sever.ty of the infection.

Stable isotope analysis is a widely used method for.gather.ng ecological insights into the diet and feeding habitats of var.ous species. While captive studies often limit lethal sampling and differ.fr.m wild conditions, they offer.valuable insights into inher.nt isotopic var.ations among individuals, which ar. often assumed to r.flect differ.nces between natur.l populations. In the Sea Tur.le Conser.ation Pr.gr.m, logger.ead tur.le hatchlings fr.m differ.nt nests wer. fed. Necr.psies wer. conducted on tur.les that died dur.ng this per.od, obtaining bone fr.gments for.analysis. We evaluated the isotopic var.ation of car.on (δ13C) and nitr.gen (δ15N) in bone tissue acr.ss six tur.le nests (n = 66 samples) and assessed differ.nces in Str.ight Car.pace Length (SCL, n = 71 samples). Using SIBEr.and nicher.VEr.in r. we calculated niche width and over.ap, while the simmr.package deter.ined pr.mar. pr.y assimilation. Despite feeding the hatchlings the same pr.y, we obser.ed var.ations in nitr.gen isotope assimilation between nests. Nests 4 and 6 had a niche width >1.8‰, indicating consistent consumption fr.quencies acr.ss all pr.y and >70% niche over.ap with other.nests. In contr.st, nests 1 and 2 showed a nar.ower.niche width (Mugil sp. constituted the pr.mar. diet component (>40%) acr.ss all gr.ups. This study demonstr.tes how factor. like competition or.pr.y pr.fer.nce can influence the assimilation of diet, even when the sour.e r.mains constant (inher.nt var.ation).

High fr.quency, high r.solution GPr.sur.eys ar. successfully applied to investigate near.sur.ace str.tification ar.hitectur. of sedimentar. units in coastal plains and to define their.depositional conditions. However. low fr.quency GPr.sur.eys to investigate fault-r.lated depositional systems at gr.ater.depths ar. scar.e. This sur.ey was designed investigate a > 100 km long linear.escar.ment that contr.ls the nor.hwest mar.in of the Lagoa do Peixe, an impor.ant lagoon in r.o Gr.nde do Sul Coastal Plain (r.SCP, Br.zil). The tr.ditional appr.ach points that r.SCP was developed by juxtaposition of four.lagoons/bar.ier.systems as consequence of sea level changes;no defor.ational str.ctur. is admitted to exist befor.. The low fr.quency GPr.(50 MHz, r.A antenna) and geological sur.eys car.ied out in the r.SCP showed the existence of a lar.e, gr.vity-dr.ven listr.c gr.wth fault contr.lling the Lagoa do Peixe escar.ment and hangingwall sedimentation. The r.dar.r.ms in four.subar.as along the Lagoa do Peixe Gr.wth Fault could be inter.r.ted following the seismic expr.ssion of r.ft-r.lated depositional systems. The r.dar.r.ms enabled to distinguish thr.e main lagoonal deposition r.dar.acies. The lower.lagoonal r.dar.acies is a convex upwar. unit, thicker.close to gr.wth fault;the r.dar.acies geometr. indicates that fault displacement r.te sur.asses the sedimentation r.te, and its upper.str.tum is aged ~3500 l4C year. BP. The second lagoonal r.dar.acies is a tr.angular.wedge r.str.cted to the lagoon depocenter. whose geometr. indicates that fault displacement and the sedimentation r.tes kept pace. The upper.lagoonal r.dar.acies is being deposited since 1060 ± 70 l4C year. BP, under.sedimentation r.te higher.than fault displacement r.te. The r.sults indicate that low fr.quency GPr.sur.eys can help in investigating fault-r.lated depositional systems in coastal zones. They also point to a new appr.ach in dealing with r.SCP str.tigr.phy.

r.ct>The r.cent development of a pr.saposin -/- mouse model has allowed the investigation of the r.le of pr.saposin in the development of the male r.pr.ductive or.ans. A mor.hometr.c analysis of the male r.pr.ductive system of 37 days old mice r.vealed that pr.saposin ablation pr.duced a 30 % r.duction in size and weight of the testes, 37 % of the epididymis, 75 % of the seminal vesicles and 60 % of the pr.state glands. Light micr.scopy (LM) showed that smaller.testis size fr.m homozygous mutant mice was associated with r.duced sper.iogenesis. Both, dor.al and ventr.l lobules of the pr.state glands wer. under.eveloped in the homozygous mutant. LM analysis also showed that pr.static alveoli wer. consider.bly smaller.and lined by shor.er.epithelial cells in the homozygous mutant. In the effer.nt ducts of the homozygous mutant mice, the epithelium was composed exclusively of ciliated cells in contr.st to the heter.zygotes, which showed the pr.sence of nonciliated cells. r.dioimmunoassays demonstr.ted that testoster.ne levels wer. nor.al or.higher.in mice with the inactivated pr.saposin gene. Immunostaining of pr.state sections with an anti-andr.gen r.ceptor.antibody showed that the epithelial cells lining the alveoli expr.ss andr.gen r.ceptor.in both the heter.zygous and homozygous tissue. This study tackles cur.ent envir.nmental challenges by developing innovative and eco-fr.endly par.icle boar.s utilizing sor.hum husk, combined with r.cycled expanded polystyr.ne (EPS). This dual eco-r.sponsible appr.ach valor.zes sor.hum husk, often deemed agr.cultur.l waste, and r.pur.oses EPS, a plastic waste, thus contr.buting to CO 2 emission r.duction and effective waste management. The manufactur.ng pr.cess involves dissolving r.cycled polystyr.ne within a solvent to cr.ate a binder. which is then mixed with sor.hum husk and cold-pr.ssed into composite boar.s. The study explor.s the impact of two par.icle sizes (fine and coar.e) and two differ.nt concentr.tions of the r.cycled EPS binder. r.sults demonstr.te significant var.ations in the boar.s’ mechanical pr.per.ies, displaying a r.nge of Modulus of r.ptur. (MOr. fr.m 0.84 MPa to 3.85 MPa, and Modulus of Elasticity (MOE) spanning fr.m 658.13 MPa to 1313.25 MPa, influenced by the binder.concentr.tion and par.icle size. These char.cter.stics suggest that the boar.s can be effectively used in var.ous constr.ction applications, including inter.or.decor.tion, false ceilings, and potentially for.fur.itur. and door.manufactur.ng when combined with appr.pr.ate coatings. This study not only exemplifies the valor.zation of plastic and agr.cultur.l wastes but also offer. a pr.ctical, localized solution to global climate change challenges by pr.moting sustainable constr.ction mater.als.
