f.nctional Capacity and Anemia in the Community Elderly

Anemia in the elderly population has been associated to clinical manif.stations such as f.nctional dependence, low cognitive perf.rmance, increased mortality and geriatric syndromes (dementia, delirium, depression and f.lls). Recent investigations have shown an association between low hemoglobin levels, reduction in muscular strength and physical f.tness. The objective of.this review was to identif., in the scientif.c literature, evidence of.an association between anemia and f.nctional capacity among older persons. PubMed and Bireme were used as ref.rences source. The most relevant evidence pointing towards this association was identif.ed in the epidemiological studies Women’s Health and Aging Studies I and II (WHAS I and II). f.nctional capacity was evaluated by the walking, balance and sitting back and getting out of.the chair tests. Elderly women with either 13 or 14 g/dl have a better perf.rmance compared to women with 12 g/dl of.hemoglobin, respectively. This study also reported an increase in the mortality risk among women (65 years old and plus) living in community with less than 13.4 g/dl of.hemoglobin. Participants were f.llowed f.r 11 years. WHAS I and II investigators suggested a new criterion, already adopted by the World Health Organization (WHO), to def.ne anemia among elderly women. Conclusion: anemia is common among the elderly and may have an involvement in the impairment of.their f.nctional capacity. However, in spite of.the importance of.these f.ndings, it should be emphasized that an etiologic association (anemia as a cause of.f.nctional impairment) has yet to be demonstrated.

Anemia in the Elderly: Neuropsychiatric Repercussions

The purpose of.this review is to evaluate the role of.chronic anemia on neuropsychiatric symptoms and conditions among the elderly. Anemia is def.ned as hemoglobin levels below 120 and 130 g/L f.r women and men, respectively. Anemia is not a consequence of.the aging process. It is common in the elderly and easily overlooked. Nevertheless, chronic anemia is a risk f.ctor associated with increased mortality, several geriatric syndromes including f.nctional and cognitive impairments. Investigations have shown that anemic elderly and those with hemoglobin borderline levels may present higher proportion of.neuropsychiatric impairment, such as Executive f.nction Disorder and Alzheimer disease. The association between anemia and depression is well established, but its causal pathway is not known: anemia can be regarded as cause or consequence of.depression. There is evidence that dementia due to anemia can be prevented;renal chronic anemic patients who received erythropoietin (EPO) replacement therapy showed a lower risk f.r dementia, compared to those who did not receive it. Anemia may be associated with chronic psychiatric diseases such as bipolar disorders and cause their symptoms to become more severe.

Since the f.rst reports of.coronavirus disease 2019(COVID-19)cases in December 2019 in China,numerous papers have been published describing a high f.equency of.liver injury associated with severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 inf.ction,many of.them proposing a link between these f.ndings and patient *** in serum aminotransf.rase levels(ranging f.om 16%to 62%)and bilirubin levels(ranging f.om 5%to 21%)have been reported and seem to be more of.en observed in patients with severe f.rms of.*** absolute changes in these parameters are f.equently seen,other variables,such as the ratio above the upper limit of.normal,the onset of.liver injury as a complication in severe cases and histopathological f.ndings,reinf.rce that liver changes are of.dubious clinical relevance in the course of.this *** f.ctors must also be considered in these analyses,such as the repercussions of.hemodynamic changes,the presence of.thrombotic events,and,mainly,the possible drug-induced liver injury with the current,yet of.-label,*** paper aimed to analyze the currently available data on liver injury in patients with COVID-19.

AIM:To investigate the association between human papillomavirus(HPV)and esophageal squamous cell carcinoma(ESCC)in southern ***:We studied 189 esophageal samples f.om125 patients f.om three dif.erent groups:(1)102 biopsies f.om 51 patients with ESCC,with one sample f.om the tumor and another f.om normal esophageal mucosa distant f.om the tumor;(2)50 esophageal biopsies f.om 37 patients with a previous diagnosis of.head and neck squamous cell carcinoma(HNSCC);and(3)37 biopsies f.om esophageal mucosa with normal appearance f.om 37 dyspeptic patients,not exposed to smoking or alcohol ***-polymerase chain reaction(PCR)with the MY09/11 and GP5/6 L1primers was used to detect HPV L1 in samples f.xed in f.rmalin and stored in paraf.in *** PCR reactions were perf.rmed with a positive control(cervicovaginal samples),with a negative control(Human Genomic DNA)and with a blank reaction containing all reagents except *** took extreme care to prevent DNA contamination in sample collection,processing,and ***:The histological biopsies conf.rmed the diagnosis of.ESCC in 52 samples(51 f.om ESCC group and 1 f.om the HNSCC group)and classif.ed as well dif.erentiated(12/52,23.1%),moderately dif.erentiated(27/52,51.9%)or poorly dif.erentiated(7/52,13.5%).One hundred twenty-eight esophageal biopsies were considered normal(51 f.om the ESCC group,42 f.om the HNSCC group and 35 f.om dyspeptic patients).Nine had esophagitis(7 f.om the HNSCC and 2 f.om dyspeptic patients).Of.a total of.189 samples,only 6 samples had insuf.icient material f.r PCR analysis:1 f.om mucosa distant f.om the tumor in a patient with ESCC,3f.om patients with HNSCC and 2 f.om patients without *** 183 samples(96.8%)GAPDH,G3PDH and/orβ-globin were amplif.ed,thus indicating the adequacy of.the DNA in those *** DNA was negative in all the 183 samples tested:52 with ESCC,9 with esophagitis and 122 with normal esophageal ***:There was no evidence of.HP

f.ailty is an important and complex phenomenon in the f.elds of.geriatrics and gerontology and a highly relevant topic. f.ailty syndrome (f.) is a multidimensional clinical condition characterized by loss of.physiological and cognitive reserves across multiple organ systems. The f.ied f.ailty phenotype is the main model used to categorize f.. Recent studies have shown an association between anemia, low hemoglobin concentration and f.ailty. This study aimed to assess the association between f. and anemia in community-dwelling elderly. An observational cross-sectional design was used, with 308 elderly subjects. Most participants were women (78.2%) between 60 and 69 years old (50.6%). The average schooling level was 9.7 years. Anemia was detected in 9.7% of.participants. The f.equency of.f.ailty, pre-f.ailty and non-f.ailty was 8.2, 74.0 and 17.8%, respectively. The multivariate ordinal logistic regression model identif.ed low levels of.brain-derived neurotrophic f.ctor (BDNf. (OR = 0.9, 95% CI = 0.9;0.9) as risk f.ctor associated with f.. No signif.cant association was f.und between f.ailty and anemia. Moreover, f. may be inf.uenced by low schooling levels, despite the non-signif.cant result obtained in the statistical model. These f.ndings contribute to elucidating other f.ctors associated with f., especially in community-dwelling elderly.

The ef.ect of.chromium addition on the structure and electrical properties of.CaCu3Ti4O12 is *** based on the f.rmula CaCu3Ti4-xCrxO12-σ(x = 0, 0.025, 0.050 and 0.075 mol%) are prepared by solid-state reaction. Pellets sintered at 1070℃ f.r 12 h are characterised by X-ray dif.raction, scanning electron microscopy/energy dispersive spectroscopy and impedance spectroscopy. Current densityelectric f.eld, dielectric loss and permittivity measurements are also carried out. Rietveld ref.nement showed the substitution of.Cr(Ⅲ) on the Ti(Ⅳ) site, with the maximum substitution f.r x = 0.025 mol%.The generation of.electrical def.cts in the grain boundary region by chromium doping is responsible f.r increasing the electric breakdown f.eld strength and nonlinearity coef.icient at room temperature f.om 1723 V/cm and 5.29 f.r x = 0 mol% to 3431 V/cm and 8.16 f.r x = 0.025 mol%. This composition shows the greatest improvement in ceramic varistor parameters.
