Variations of OCT measurements corrected for the magnification effect according to axial length and refractive error in children

Purpose:The aim of this paper was to examine the distribution of macular,retinal nerve fiber layer(RNFL)thickness and optic disc parameters of myopic and hyperopic eyes in comparison withemmetropic control eyes and to investigate their variation according to axial length(AL)andspherical equivalent(SE)in healthy ***:This study included 293 pairs of eyes of 293children(145 boys and 148 girks),ranging in age from 6 to 17 years,Subjects were dividedaccording to SE in control(emmetropia,99 children),myopia(100 children)and hyperopia(94children)groups and according to axial AL in 68 short(25.00 mm,36).Macular parameters,RNFL thickness and opticdisc morphology were assessed by the Cirrus^(TM) *** was measured using the ***'s formula was used for calculating the corrected AL-related ocular *** Mean age(±SD)was 10.84±3.05 years;mean(±SD)SE was+0.14±0.51 D(range from8.75 to+8.25 D)and mean AL(±SD)was 23.12±*** RNFL thickness,averagemacular thickness and macular volume decreased as AL and myopia *** correlationsbetween AL/SE and optic disc parameters were found after correcting for magnification ***:AL and refractive error affect measurements of macular and RNFL thickness inhealthy *** make a correct interpretation of ocT measurements,ocular magnificationeffect should be taken into account by clinicians or OCT manufacturers.

Mortality rate after total knee arthroplasty or total hip arthroplasty in patients with a history of liver transplant

In this editorial I comment on the article by Ahmed et al published in a recent issue of the World j Orthop 2023;14:*** is well known that patients who have undergone a liver transplant(LT)may need to have a total hip arthroplasty(THA)or total knee arthroplasty(TKA)*** et al stated that the mortality rate in these patients was similar to the one of the general ***,there are three articles previously published that found higher mortality in LT patients who experienced THA/TKA than in the general population(individuals without LT).Therefore,in this Editorial I would like to point out that there is controversy in the literature regarding whether LT patients undergoing THA/TKA have higher mortality than the general ***,future research should attempt to resolve this controversy.

Background:One of the pathological hallmarks distinguishing Alzheimer’s disease from other dementias is the accumulation of amyloid beta(Aβ).Higher physical activity is associated with decreased dementia risk,and one potential path could be through Aβlevels *** aimed to explore the relationship between physical activity and Aβin middle-aged and older ***:A systematic search of PubMed,Web of Science,PsycINFO,Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials,and SPORTDiscus was performed from inception to April 28,*** were eligible if they included physical activity and Aβdata in adults aged 45 years or ***-level metaanalyses of intervention and observational studies were performed to examine the role of physical activity in modulating Aβ***:In total,37 articles were included(8 randomized controlled trials,3 non-randomized controlled trials,4 prospective longitudinal studies,and 22 cross-sectional studies).The overall effect size of physical activity interventions on changes in blood Aβwas medium(pooled standardized mean difference=-0.69,95%confidence interval(95%CI):-1.41 to 0.03;I^(2)=74.6%).However,these results were not statistically significant,and there were not enough studies to explore the effects of physical activity on cerebrospinal fluid(CSF)and brain Aβ.Data from observational studies were examined based on measurements of Aβin the brain using positron emission tomography scans,CSF,and *** physical activity was positively associated with Aβonly in the CSF(Estimate r=0.12;95%CI:0.05-0.18;I^(2)=38.00%).Conclusion:Physical activity might moderately reduce blood Aβin middle-aged and older ***,results were only near statistical significance and might be interpreted with caution given the methodological limitations observed in some of the included *** observational studies,higher levels of physical activity were positively associated with Aβonly in ***,further research is needed t

The chemical composition of marabou（Dichrostachys cinerea） wood and its treatment with acetic acid were *** different treatment approaches,direct acetosolv and combined acid prehydrolysis/acetosolv,were *** effects of acetic acid concentration（50%,70% and 90%） and temperature（normal boiling temperature and 121°C） on yield of solids,solubilization of lignin and hemicelluloses and recovery of cellulose were evaluated for both *** solubilization of marabou components was observed in the direct acetosolv treatment at 121°C,especially at the highest acetic acid concentration,where around 84.8% of lignin and 78% of hemicelluloses were *** the material was subjected to acid prehydrolysis prior to acetosolv treatment,lignin solubilization was improved,especially at low acetic acid *** 80% of the solubilized lignin was recovered from the liquors in the direct acetosolv treatment,but the recovery was lower in the combined *** was well preserved in all the treatment schemes.

T follicular helper expansion and humoral-mediated rejection are independent of the HVEM/BTLA pathway

The molecular pathways contributing to humoral-mediated allograft rejection are poorly defined. In this study, we assessed the role of the herpesvirus entry mediator/B- and T-lymphocyte attenuator （HVEM/BTLA） signalling pathway in the context of antibody-mediated allograft rejection. An experimental setting was designed to elucidate whether the blockade of HVEM/BTLA interactions could modulate de novo induction of host antidonor-specific antibodies during the course of graft rejection. To test this hypothesis, fully allogeneic major histocompatibility complex-mismatched skin grafts were transplanted onto the right flank of recipient mice that were treated with isotype control, anti-CD40L or modulatory antibodies of the HVEM/BTLA signalling pathway. The frequencies of CD4 T follicular helper （Tfh） cells （B220-, CD4＋ CXCR5＋ PD-lhigh）, extrafollicular helper cells （B220-, CD4＋ CXCR5- PD-1＋ and PD-1-） and germinal centre （GC） B cells （B220＋Fas＋ GL7＋） were analysed by flow cytometry in draining and non-draining lymph nodes at day 10 post transplantation during the acute phase of graft rejection. The host antidonor isotype-specific humoral immune response was also assessed. Whereas blockade of the CD40/CD40L pathway was highly effective in preventing the allogeneic humoral immune response, antibody-mediated blockade of the HVEM/BTLA-interacting pathway affected neither the expansion of Tfh cells nor the expansion of GC B cells. Consequently, the course of the host antidonor antibody-mediated response proceeded normally, without detectable evidence of impaired development. In summary, these data indicate that HVEM/BTLA interactions are dispensable for the formation of de novo host antidonor isotype-specific antibodies in transplantation.

On a Classical Theorem on the Diameter and Minimum Degree of a Graph

In this work, we obtain good upper bounds for the diameter of any graph in terms of its minimum degree and its order, improving a classical theorem due to Erdos, Pach, Pollack and Tuza. We use these bounds in order to study hyperbolic graphs （in the Gromov sense）. To compute the hyperbolicity constant is an almost intractable problem, thus it is natural to try to bound it in terms of some parameters of the graph. Let H（n, δ0） be the set of graphs G with n vertices and minimum degree 50, and j（n, Δ） be the set of graphs G with n vertices and maximum degree A. We study the four following extremal problems on graphs： a（n,δ0） = min{δ（G）｜ G ∈H（n, δ0）}, b（n, δ0） =- max{δ（G）｜ e ∈H（n, δ0）}, α（n, Δ） = min{δ（G） [ G ∈ j（n, Δ）} and β（n,Δ） = max{δ（G） ] G∈Π（n,Δ）}. In particular, we obtain bounds for b（n, δ0） and we compute the precise value of a（n, δ0）, α（n, Δ） and w（n, Δ） for all values of n, r0 and A, respectively.

Bioactive Amines: Aspects of Quality and Safety in Food

Presented in several types of food, bioactive amines are described as organic bases of low molecular weight. They have vasoactive, psychoactive and toxicological characteristics and constitute a potential health risk. The concentration of amines formed in foods depends on the type of microorganisms present, the action of decarboxylase enzymes produced by microorganisms on specific amino acids and favorable conditions for enzymatic activity. The presence of these chemical metabolites has been suggested as a quality indicator in routine analyzes for food production and marketing monitoring. The detection of bioactive amines can be performed by chromatographic methods, fluorometric and enzymatic kits. Bioactive amine formation can be prevented mainly through the adoption of good manufacturing practices, but the industry can also use other methods such as temperature control in the production chain, modified atmosphere packaging and food irradiation. This review aims to address the formation of bioactive amines in foods, emphasizing the formation and classification of these metabolites, aspects related to health, acceptable limits, detection methods and control methods used in the industry to ensure food safety and quality. The success of this approach is linked to the importance of bioactive amines as quality indicators, as well as the discussion on the development of methodologies for determining these substances and discussion of acceptable parameters in food.

Endoscopic and anesthetic feasibility of EUS and ERCP combined in a single session versus two different sessions

AIM:To discuss the feasibility of single session endoscopic ultrasonography(EUS) to discuss and endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography(ERCP) ***:Retrospective endoscopic and anesthetic outcome comparison of performing both EUS and ERCP in a single endoscopic session(Group Ⅰ) versus performing each procedure in two different sessions(Group Ⅱ) was *** following variables were evaluated:epidemiological variables,American Society of Anesthesiologists Physical Status Classification(ASA) level,procedural time,propofol dose,anesthetic complications,endoscopic complications and diagnostic yield,and therapeutic procedures on both groups.T-student,ChiSquare and Fisher test were used for ***:We included 39 patients in Group Ⅰ(mean age:69.85 ± 9.25;27 men) and 46 in Group Ⅱ(mean age:67.46 ± 12.57;25 men).Procedural time did not differ significantly between both groups(Group Ⅰvs Group Ⅱ:93 ± 32.78 vs 98.98 ± 38.17;P >0.05) but the dose of propofol differed(Group Ⅰ vs Group Ⅱ:322.28 ± 250.54 mg vs 516.96 ± 289.06 mg;P = 0.001).Three patients had normal findings on both *** anesthetic complications [O2 desaturation(2),broncoaspiration(1)] and 9 endoscopic complications [pancreatitis(6),bleeding(1),perforation(1),cholangitis(1)] occurred without significant differences between both groups(P > 0.05).We did not find any significant difference regarding age,sex,ASA scale level,diagnostic yield or therapeutic maneuvers between both ***:The performance of EUS and ERCP in a single session offers a similar diagnostic and therapeutic yield,does not entail a higher complication risk and requires a significantly smaller dose of propofol for sedation compared with performing each exploration in a different session.

Identification of the precise molecular pathways involved in oncogene-induced transformation may help us gain a better understanding of tumor initiation and promotion. Here, we demonstrate that SOX2^+ foregut epithelial cells are prone to oncogenic transformation upon mutagenic insults, such as Kras^G12D and p53 deletion. GFP-based lineage-tracing experiments indicate that SOX2^+ cells are the cells-of-origin of esophagus and stomach hyperplasia. Our observations indicate distinct roles for oncogenic KRAS mutation and P53 deletion. p53 homozygous deletion is required for the acquisition of an invasive potential, and Kras^G12D expression, but not p53 deletion, suffices for tumor formation. Global gene expression analysis reveals secreting factors upregulated in the hyperplasia induced by oncogenic KRAS and highlights a crucial role for the CXCR2 pathway in driving hyperplasia. Collectively, the array of genetic models presented here demonstrate that stratified epithelial cells are susceptible to oncogenic insults, which may lead to a better understanding of tumor initiation and aid in the design of new cancer therapeutics.

Dear Editor, During recent decades, a novel mechanism of secretion has been identified in a wide range of mammalian cells. It involves the release of bioactive membrane nanovesicles （30-100 nm）, termed exosomes, upon the fusion of multivesicular bodies with the plasma membrane （Thery et al., 2009）. Exosomes are implicated in diverse functions, such as scavenging of archaic proteins, intercellular messengers delivering cell-specific signals, and vehicles for transmissible pathogens. Exosomes have also been described in other organisms such as bacte- ria, Drosophila, and fungi.
