Soil and climate equally contribute to changes in the species compositions of Brazilian dry forests across 300 km

Aims Understanding the factors that control biodiversity distributions at different spatial scales has been a key challenge for conservation *** biodiversity,reflected in differences in species compositions among sites(beta diversity),can be derived from species replacement(turnover)and is driven by multiple ***,we sought to tackle this issue through two questions related to threatened Brazilian seasonally dry forests:(i)what is the contribution of species turnover to beta diversity?and(ii)which factors drive variations in species compositions among forest patches?Methods We sampled tree species and environmental variables(soils and climate)in 17 dry forest patches spaced almost 300 km *** used the beta diversity partitioning framework to determine the contribution of *** used redundancy analysis,with properly controlled spatial structure,to assess the contributions of the environmental and spatial factors to the variations of the species *** Findings Beta diversity among the patches was mainly represented by the turnover component(98.2%),with Simpson dissimilarity superior to other regions of the country(means of 0.89 and 0.71 in multiple site and pairwise measures,respectively).The environmental factors measured explained more than space,representing 30.3%of the variation of the species composition,of which 28.1%was nonspatially *** suggest that 300 km represents a threshold at which edaphic and climatic predictors have similar effects in determining community turnover(14.9%and 12.6%,respectively,without spatial structure).Thus,conservation strategies should be considered across landscapes to effectively protect tropical forest diversity,as even considering the different climatic aspects covered by the scale,landscaped edaphic varieties are important drivers of species turnover.

Yield of capsule endoscopy in obscure gastrointestinal bleeding:A comparative study between premenopausal and menopausal women

AIM To evaluate differences in capsule endoscopy(CE) performed in the setting of obscure gastrointestinal bleeding(OGIB) among premenopausal women(PMW) and menopausal women(MW).METHODS Retrospective, single-center study, including female patients submitted to CE in the setting of OGIB between May 2011 and December 2016. Patients were divided into 2 groups according to age, considering fertile age as ≤ 55 years and postmenopausal age as > 55 years. The diagnostic yield(DY), the rebleeding rate and the time to rebleed were evaluated and compared between groups. Rebleeding was defined as a drop of Hb > 2 g/dL or need for transfusional support or presence of melena/*** A hundred and eighty three female patients underwent CE for OGIB, of whom 30.6%(n = 56) were PMW and 69.4%(n = 127) were MW. The DY was 30.4% in PMW and 63.8% in MW. The most common findings were angiodysplasias in both groups(PMW: 21.4%, MW: 44.9%)(P = 0.003). In PMW, only 1.8% required therapeutic endoscopy. In 17.3% of MW, CE findingsled to additional endoscopic treatment. Rebleeding at 1, 3 and 5 years in PMW was 3.6%, 10.2%, 10.2% and 22.0%, 32.3% and 34.2% in MW. Postmenopausal status was significantly associated with higher DY(P < 0.001), TY(P = 0.003), rebleeding(P = 0.031) and lower time to rebleed(P = 0.001).CONCLUSION PMW with suspected OGIB are less likely to have significant findings in CE. In MW DY, need for endoscopic treatment and rebleeding were significantly higher while time to rebleed was lower.

Hygroscopic Behavior of Lyophilized Powder of Grugru Palm (<i>Acrocomia aculeata</i>)

The objective of this study was to determine adsorption isotherms and hygroscopic behavior of lyophilized powder from grugru palm. The powders of grugru palm were obtained by lyophilization process without maltodextrin (T1) and with 8% matodextrin (T2). The experimental data were obtained through the static gravimetric method at temperatures (25℃, 30℃, 35℃ and 40℃), with different saturated solutions of salts. The models of GAB, BET, Henderson and Oswin were fitted to experimental data. The values obtained for hygroscopicity were 7.68% and 6.86% and the degrees of caking were 0.33% and 0.09% for T1 and T2, respectively. Mathematical models of adsorption isotherms for grugru palm powders can be classified as Type III. The GAB and Oswin models represented better the behavior of isotherms for T1 and T2. Grugru palm powder showed an increase in the humidity of the monolayer Xm along with increasing temperature. The grugru palm powder demonstrated to be a non-hygroscopic product, non-caking features.

Motor competence and health-related fitness in children:A cross-cultural comparison between Portugal and the United States

Background: Motor competence and health-related fitness are important components for the development and maintenance of a healthy lifestyle in children. This study examined cross-cultural performances on motor competence and health-related fitness between Portuguese and ***: Portuguese(n = 508; 10.14 § 2.13 years, mean § SD) and U.S.(n = 710; 9.48 § 1.62 years) children performed tests of cardiorespiratory fitness(Progressive Aerobic Cardiovascular Endurance Run), upper body strength(handgrip), locomotor skill performance(standing long jump), and object projection skill performance(throwing and kicking). Portuguese and U.S. children were divided into 2 age groups(6à9 and 10à13 years) for data analysis purposes. A twoàfactor oneàway analysis of covariance(ANOVA) was conducted with the Progressive Aerobic Cardiovascular Endurance Run, handgrip, standing long jump scores, kicking, and throwing speed(km/h) as dependent ***: Results indicated that Portuguese children, irrespective of sex, presented better performances in locomotor and cardiorespiratory performance(standing long jump and Progressive Aerobic Cardiovascular Endurance Run) than U.S. children in both age bands. U.S. children outperformed Portuguese children during throwing and handgrip tests. Kicking tests presented gender differences: Portuguese boys and U.S. girls outperformed their internationally matched ***: Cultural differences in physical education curricula and sports participation may impact differences in motor competence and fitness development in these countries.

Antarctic corals are known from the Upper Cretaceous Santa Marta Formation(Santonian–early Campanian)and Gamma Member(late Campanian)of Snow Hill Island Formation(late Campanian–early Maastrichtian)but they have not so far been taxonomically *** describe three corals taxa based on 29 specimens collected in 2007 and 2016 on James Ross Island(northeast of the Antarctic Peninsula).They represent the first formal record of scleractinian corals from the Santa Marta Formation,identified as Caryophylliidae *** Gamma Member of Snow Hill Island Formation,identified as Astreopora *** Fungiacyathus *** family Caryophylliidae and the genus Astreopora were not restricted to the Weddellian Biogeographic Province but the species Fungiacyathus deltoidophorus was endemic to Antarctica during the *** genus Fungiacyathus and the family Caryophylliidae thrive in Antarctica until the present *** occurred in shallower environments during the late Campanian than *** specimens related to Astreopora have yet to be found in Antarctica after the late *** can be explained by the capacity of Fungiacyathus and Caryophyllidae to endure cold waters,since they are asymbiotic *** symbiotic Astreopora sp.,due to its sensitivity to low temperatures,became extinct in this continent as soon as the Antarctic waters began to cool,around the Campanian/*** presence of Astreopora *** Gamma Member of Snow Hill Island Formation may represents the first occurrence of this genus in Antarctica and the oldest record of this genus in the Southern Hemisphere.

Clinical prognostic factors for disabling Crohn's disease: A systematic review and meta-analysis

AIM: To identify demographic and clinical factors asso-ciated with disabling Crohn's disease (CD). METHODS: A systematic review and meta-analysisof observational studies, focusing on the factors that can predict the prognosis of different outcomes of CD was undertaken. PubMed, ISI Web of Knowledge and Scopus were searched to identify studies investigat-ing the above mentioned factors in adult patients with CD. Studies were eligible for inclusion if they describe prognostic factors in CD, with inclusion and exclusion criteria defined as follows. Studies with adult patients and CD, written in English and studying association between clinical factors and at least one prognosis out-come were included. Meta-analysis of effects was un-dertaken for the disabling disease outcome, using odds ratio (OR) to assess the effect of the different factors in the outcome. The statistical method used was Mantel-Haenszel for fixed effects. The 16-item quality assess-ment tool (QATSDD) was used to assess the quality of the studies (range: 0-42). RESULTS: Of the 913 papers initially selected, sixty studies were reviewed and three were included in the systematic review and meta-analysis. The global QA-TSDD scores of papers were 18, 21 and 22. Of a total of 1961 patients enrolled, 1332 (78%) were classified with disabling disease five years after diagnosis. In two studies, age at diagnosis was a factor associated with disabling disease five years after diagnosis. Individu-als under 40 years old had a higher risk of developing disabling disease. In two studies, patients who were treated with corticosteroids on the first flare developed disabling disease five years after diagnosis. Further, perianal disease was found to be relevant in all of the studies at two and five years after diagnosis. Finally, one study showed localization as a factor associated with disabling disease five years after diagnosis, with L3 being a higher risk factor. Nitric oxide plays a key role in the suppressive activity of tolerogenic dendritic cells

Tolerogenic dendritic cells （DCs） are widely studied for their possible use in the treatment of inflammatory disorders, such as autoimmune diseases. One of the obstacles for the use of this cell-based therapy is the characterization of drugs that are able to modulate DCs. We have previously shown that chloroquine （CQ）, an antimalarial agent, has the ability to modulate DCs towards a tolerogenic phenotype.1 These tolerogenic DCs are able to suppress the development of experimental autoimmune encephalomyelitis （EAE）, a T cell-driven mouse model of human multiple sclerosis. In addition, several studies have proposed that nitric oxide （NO） plays a major role in the dif- ferentiation of regulatory T cells （Tregs） and the suppression of Thl/Th17 cells.2＂3 However, little is known about the role of DC-derived NO in the modulation of inflammatory auto- immune responses. Thus, we aimed to evaluate whether NO plays a role in the tolerogenic activity of CQ-treated DCs （CQ- DCs）. We found that CQ induces DC production of NO and expression of indoleamine 2,3-dioxygenase （IDO）, as well as inducible nitric oxide syrtthase （iNOS）.
