Using optical coherence tomography images to evaluate fungal growth in reline resins

As changes in hard or soft oral tissues normally have a microbiological component,it is important to develop diagnostic techniques that support clinical evaluation,without destroying microbio-logical formation.The optical coherence tomography(OCT)represents an alternative to analyze tissues and microorganisms without the need for processing.This imaging technique could be defined as a fast,real-time,in situ,and non-destructive method.Thus,this study proposed the use of the OCT to visualize biofilm by Candida albicans in reline resins for removable prostheses.Three reline resins(silagum-Comfort,Coe Comfort,and soft-Confort),with distinct char-acteristics related to wa ter sorption and fungal inhibition were used.A total of 30 samples(10 for each resin group)were subjected to OCT scanning before and 96 h after inoculation with Candida albicans(URM 6547).The biofilm analysis was carried out through a 2D optical Callisto sD-OCT(930 nm)operated in the spectral domain.Then,the images were preprocessed using a3×3 Gaussian filter to remove the noise,and then Otsu binarization,allowing segmentation and pixel counting.The layer's biofilm formed was clearly defined and,indeed,its visualization is modified by water sorption of each material.silagum-Comfort and soft.Confort showed some similarities in the scattering of light between the clean and inoculated samples,in which,the latter samples presented higher values of light signal intensity.Coe-Comfort samples were the only ones that showed no di®erences between the clean or inoculated images.Therefore,the results of this study suggest that OCT is a viable technique to visualize the biolm in reline materials.becausendings in the literature are still scarcely using the OCT technique to visualize biolm in reline resins,further studies are encouraged.It should not contain any references or displayed equations.

The generation of the continental crust is widely accepted to have taken place predominantly in the Archean,when TTG magmatism associated with greenstone-belt supracrustal succession development was typically followed by emplacement of high-K granites before crustal stabilization.This study focuses on the Campos Gerais complex(CGC),which is an Archean granite-greenstone belt lithological association in a tectonic window located in the southwesternmost portion of the são Francisco craton(sFC).The CGC is an important segment of Paleo-to Mesoarchean continental crust to be integrated into paleogeographic reconstructions prior to the transition into the Paleoproterozoic.This investigation reports field relationships,28 major and trace element compositions,U–Pb(zircon)geochronological results,and Hf and sm–Nd isotope data for orthogneiss and amphibolite samples.The results indicate that the CGC records a complex Archean crustal evolution,where voluminous 2.97 Ga TTG tonalites and trondhjemites(ε_(Nd)(t)=-4.7;T_(DM)=3.24 Ga)were followed by 2.89 Ga sanukitoid tonalite production(ε_(Nd)(t)=-1.9;T_(DM)=3.02 Ga),broadly coeval with the development of the Fortaleza de Minas and Pitangui greenstone-belts.These events are interpreted to represent the initial stage of an important subduction-accretion tectonic cycle,which ended with the emplacement of 2.82–2.81 Ga high-K leucogranites and migmatization of the TTG-sanukitoid crust,with hybrid and two-mica,peraluminous compositions(ε_(Nd)(t)=-8.0 to-8.6;T_(DM)=3.57–3.34 Ga).The presence of inherited zircons with207Pb/206Pb ages of 3.08 Ga,3.29 Ga,3.55 Ga and 3.62 Ga indicates that the Mesoarchean tectonic processes involved reworking of Meso-to Eo-archean crust.Renewed TTG magmatism took place at ca.2.77 Ga represented by juvenile tonalite stocks(ε_(Nd)(t)=+1.0 to-1.5;T_(DM)=2.80–2.88 Ga)which intrude the TTG-greenstone belt association.Crustal stabilization was attained by 2.67 Ga,allowing for the emplacement of within-plate tholeiitic amphibolites(ε_(Nd)(t)=-3.1;T_(DM)=2.87 G

Dimensioning Urban Drainage systems in Housing subdivisions in the Amazon Using Different Hydrological Models

Hydrological studies for sizing urban drainage systems in the Amazon have often been neglected and little investigated for rainwater projects. This research evaluated alternative hydrological models used in sizing urban drainage network projects in subdivisions with subsidized houses in the Amazonian region in brazil. statistical tests of these models were performed for both original and alternative scenarios. The methodological steps we conducted as follows: 1) evaluate the dimensioning of infrastructure project networks, considering two case studies contemplated by the Calha Norte Program (CNP) in the state of Amapá;2) test the statistical significance of the dimensioning of network diameters (α sidering a) benchmark project (MD or M1) approved by the Ministry of Defense;b) determination of concentration time (Csub>tsub>) and rainfall intensity-duration-frequency (IDF) relationships, as well as estimating diameters using alternative models. The results indicated a significant influence on the diameters of the projected rainfall networks (p suggesting that alternative models predicted more unfavorable flow peaks than the original model. We conclude that the benchmarking model underestimated the diameter of the project compared to alternative models, which means the optimized Csub>tsub> parameter significantly impacts dimensioning estimates in rainwater projects in these Amazonian municipalities. This suggests that underestimated parameters in MD may cause inefficiency in the stormwater system projects in future similar scenarios.

Mouse housing system using pressurized cages intraventilated:Reproductive performance and lung histopathology

The present study is a report on the use of individual micro fans attached to the lids of mice cages, leading to cage pressurization and internal ventilation. The effect of this ventilation system was analyzed in relation to reproductive performance and lung histopathology of bALb/c, sPF mice, and was based on the results of previous studies, which demonstrated the mechanical efficiency of the system. No statistical differences were observed in relation to interbirth interval, number of offspring born, and number and weight of offspring weaned. Lung histopathology, however, showed that the group of animals kept under the microenvironmental ventilation system for 229 days presented no pulmonary lesions (score 0), whereas animals in the control group, kept in a conventional micro isolator, without ventilation, presented score 1 (discrete inflammatory reaction and hemorrhage, 5 animals);score 2 (hemorrhage, 1 animal) and score 3 (interstitial pneumonia and hemorrhage or peribronchitis and hemorrhage, 2 animals). Data demonstrates that the presence and functioning of the micro fans on the lids did not interfere with the reproductive performance of the animals and improve the quality in laboratory animals production, providing them without any kind of pulmonary lesions.

The central importance of quantum chemistry is to obtain solutions of the schr?dinger equation for the accurate determination of the properties of atomic and molecular systems that occurred from the calculation of wave functions accurate for many diatomic and polyatomic molecules, using self Consistent Field method (sCF). The application of quantum chemical methods in the study and planning of bioactive compounds has become a common practice nowadays. From the point of view of planning it is important to note, when it comes to the use of molecular modeling, a collective term that refers to methods and theoretical modeling and computational techniques to mimic the behavior of molecules, not intend to reach a bioactive molecule simply through the use of computer programs. The choice of method for energy minimization depends on factors related to the size of the molecule, parameters of availability, stored data and computational resources. Molecular models generated by the computer are the result of mathematical equations that estimate the positions and properties of the electrons and nuclei, the calculations exploit experimentally, the characteristics of a structure, providing a new perspective on the molecule. In this work we show that studies of Highest Occupied Molecular Orbital Energy (HOMO), Low Unoccupied Molecular Orbital Energy (LUMO) and Map of molecular electrostatic potential (MEP) using Hatree-Fock method with different basis sets (HF/3-21G*, HF/3-21G**, HF/6-31G, HF/6-31G*, HF/6-31G** and HF/6-311G), that are of great importance in modern chemistry, biochemistry, molecular biology, and other fields of knowledge of health sciences. In order to obtain a significant correlation, it is essential that the descriptors are used appropriately. Thus, the quantum chemical calculations are an attractive source of new molecular descriptors that can, in principle, express all the geometrical and electronic properties of molecules and their interactions with biological receptor.

Giant sialolith with 20 Years of Evolution in the submandibular Duct

sialolithiasis is a common disease that affects the major salivary glands, which is characterized by obstruction of the gland itself or its excretory duct due to the formation of a sialolith, resulting in decreased salivary flow. It mainly affects the submandibular glands (80% - 90%), probably because it has a long duct that surrounds the mylohyoid muscle and emerges against gravity through the Wharton’s duct. The size of the salivary calculus can vary from below 1 millimeter (mm) to a few centimeters in diameter, where most stay below 10 mm. Only 7% are greater than 15 mm and these are classified as giant calculi. This report presents a case of asymptomatic giant sialolith (approximately 60 mm b>inb> b>diameterb>) located in the duct of the right submandibular gland, with 20 years of evolution. The treatment of choice was the surgical removal of the sialolith (calculus) through the salivary duct with maintenance of the gland. Although the individual did not present complaints related to the presence of the giant calculi, its removal had a great impact on their quality of life, since a significant respiratory improvement was reported by the individual. The major difference reported was better sleep quality.

Allelopathy of the Leaf Extract of Eucalyptus Genetic Material on the Physiological Performance of Millet seeds

This study aims to evaluate the possible allelopathic effects of young and mature leaf extract from of two eucalyptus genetic materials on the physiological performance of millet seeds. The experiment was carried out in a completely randomized design, in a 5 × 2 × 2 factorial arrangement [five concentrations of the extract (0, 25%, 50%, 75%, and 100%) × two genetic materials (1 - Eucalyptus grandis × Eucalyptus urophylla and 2 - Eucalyptus grandis × Eucalyptus camaldulensis) × two maturation stages of leaves (young and mature leaves)] with four replicates, each one with 25 seeds. seeding was performed on the germitest paper substrate distributed in Petri dishes, moistened with the extract according to the treatments, being allocated in biochemical oxygen demand (b.O.D) adjusted at 25°C and 12 h photoperiod. Percentage, speed index, mean germination time, aerial part and primary root length, and dry matter weight of aerial part and root system of seedlings were evaluated. The leaf extracts of the two eucalyptus clones had all the analyzed variables changed with effect more evident on young leaf extract of the genetic material 1. It can be concluded that the tested genetic materials have a detrimental effect on the physiological performance of millet seeds.
