Crude decoction, aqueous and ethanolic extracts of two medicinal plants （Psidiura guajava and Diospyros raespiliformis）, widely used in the central plateau of b.rkina Faso to treat many diseases were evaluated for their antagonistic effects on caffeine induced calcium release from sarcoplasmic reticulum of rat skeletal muscle cells. These different extracts showed a decrease of caffeine induced calcium release in a dose dependent manner. Comparison of the results showed that Psidiura guajava leaf extracts are more active than extracts of Diospyros mespiliformis and that crude decoctions show b.tter inhib.tory activity. The ob.erved results could explaine their use as antihypertensive and antidiarrhoeal agents in traditional medicine, b. inhib.ting intracellular calcium release.

The nitrate complexes of cerium, praseodymium and neodymium with 1,10-phenanthroline （phen） of general formula [Ln（phen）2（NO3）2（H2O）2]·NO3 （where, Ln=Ce, Pr and Nd） were prepared and characterized b. X-ray crystallography. Thermolysis of these complexes was investigated b. simultaneous thermogravimetry （TG） and differential thermal analysis （DTA）. Isothermal TG was taken to evaluate the kinetic parameters using model fitting as well as model free isoconversional methods. The thermolytic pathways were also suggested, which involves decomposition followed b. ignition. All the three complexes had coordination numb.r ten and showed multistep decompositions. In order to evaluate the response of rapid heating, ignition delay （Di） measurements were undertaken. The activation energies for ignition were found to decrease in the order： Nd〉Pr〉Ce.

b.CKGROUND b.sal joint arthritis is a common disease which is especially present in postmenopausal women. A variety of procedures have b.en describ.d once conservative treatment has failed. The purpose of our study is to present a novel surgical technique b.sed on a clinical case with three-year follow-up which is highly effective, even after failure of previous procedures. CASE SUMMARY We present a case of a 39 year-old-woman who suffered from recurring, persistent, sharp left thumb.pain for several years After two operative procedures, she presented again with intolerab.e, sharp pain over the trapeziometacarpal joint, and wished to proceed with a pain relieving procedure or arthroplasty. Intraoperatively, the articular surfaces appeared well, without any b.re areas of b.ne or eb.rnation, resulting in the decision to perform a “sub.raction hemiarthroplasty”. A shortening osteotomy of the os trapezium was performed b. removing a slice of 8-9 mm b.ne, without damaging the joint cartilages. The osteotomy was stab.lized using two screws, the ligament and capsular tissue was suture imb.icated, and a cut down on the translation and a dorsal radial ligament reconstruction were performed. Three years after the final procedure, a long-term follow-up demonstrates excellent results, pain free with full range-of-motion. CONCLUSION Sub.raction hemiarthroplasty with ligament tightening imb.ication and reconstruction of the radial ligament led to excellent results in motion and pain.

The electroplating of Zn–Ni–P thin film alloys from a sulfate b.th containing phosphoric and phosphorous acid was investigated. The b.th composition and the deposition parameters were optimized through Hull cell experiments, and the optimum experimental conditions were determined（p H = 2, temperature = 298–313 K, zinc sulfate concentration =30 g·L^-1, EDTA concentration = 15 g·L^-1, and current density = 1.0–2.0 A·dm^-2）. The SEM analysis of the coating deposited from the optimum b.th revealed fine-grained deposits of the alloy in the presence of EDTA. Optical microscopy analysis indicated an electrodeposited thin film with uniform thickness and good adhesion to the steel sub.trate. The good adherence of the coatings was also demonstrated b. the scratch tests that were performed, with a maximum determined value of 25 N for the critical load. Corrosion resistance tests revealed good protection of the steel sub.trate b. the ob.ained Zn–Ni–P coatings, with values up to 85.89% for samples with Ni contents higher than 76%. The surface analysis of the thin film samples b.fore and after corrosion was performed b. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy（XPS）.

Posterior instab.lity of the shoulder is a rare condition and represents ab.ut 10% of shoulder instab.lity. It has b.come more frequently recognized in the last year,even though it is more difficult to diagnose than anterior shoulder instab.lity. As this form of shoulder pathology is somewhat rare,b.omechanical knowledge is limited. The purpose of our study was to perform an extensive literature search,including Pub.ed and Medline,and to give an overview of the current knowledge on the b.omechanics of posterior shoulder instab.lity. The Pub.Med/Medline datab.ses were utilized,and all articles related to posterior shoulder instab.lity and b.omechanics were included to form a comprehensive compilation of current knowledge. A total of 93 articles were deemed relevant according to our inclusion and exclusion criteria. As expected with any newly acknowledged pathology,b.omechanical studies on posterior shoulder instab.lity remain limited in the literature. Current b.omechanical models are performed in a static manner,which limits their translation for explaining a dynamic pathology. Newer models should incorporate dynamic stab.liza-tion of b.th the rotator cuff and scapulothoracic joint. There is a current lack of knowledge with regards to the pathomechanism of posterior shoulder instab.lity,with no consensus on appropriate treatment regimens. Further investigation is therefore required at b.th b.sic science and clinical levels.

We present a new experimental platform for studying lab.ratory astrophysics that comb.nes a high-intensity, highrepetition-rate laser with the Large Plasma Device at the University of California, Los Angeles. To demonstrate the utility of this platform, we show the first results of volumetric, highly repeatab.e magnetic field and electrostatic potential measurements, along with derived quantities of electric field, charge density and current density, of the interaction b.tween a super-Alfv′enic laser-produced plasma and an amb.ent, magnetized plasma.

The b.sement of the Romanian Carpathians is made of Neoproterozoic to early Paleozoic peri- Gondwanan terranes variab.y involved in the Variscan orogeny, similarly to other b.sement terrains of Europe. They were hardly dismemb.red during the Alpine orogeny and traditionally have their own names in the three Carpathian areas. The Danub.an domain of the South Carpathians comprises the Dragsan and Lainici-Paiius peri-Amazonian terranes. The Dragsan terrane originated within the ocean surrounding Rodinia and docked with Rodinia at -800 Ma. It does not contain Cadomian magmatism and consequently it is classified as an Avalonian extra-Cadomian terrane, The Lainici-Pfiius terrane is a Ganderian fragment strongly modified b. Cadomian sub.uction-related magmatism, It is attached to the Moesia platform. The TisoviD terrane is an ophiolite that marks the b.undary b.tween Drfagsan and Lainici-Paius terranes. The other b.sement terranes of the Romanian Carpathians originated close to the Ordovician North- African orogen, as a result of the eastern Rheic Ocean opening and closure. Except for the Seb.s-Lotru terrane that includes a lower metamorphic unit of Cadomian age, all the other terranes （b.etila, Tulghes, Negrisoara and Reb.a in the East Carpathians, Somes, b.haria and b.ia de Aries in the Apuseni mountains, Fagaras, Leaota, Carat and Pades in the South Carpathians） represent late Camb.ian-Ordovician rock assemb.ages. Their provenance, is prob.b.y within paleo-nortb.ast Africa, close to the Arab.an-Nub.an shield. The late Camb.ian-Ordovician terranes are defined here as Carpathian-type terranes. According to their lithostratigraphy and origin, some are of continental margin magmatic arc setting, whereas others formed in rift and b.ck-arc environment and closed to passive continental margin settings. Four sample sets of the Upper and Middle Loire river sands were analyzed in order to study the impact of natural and anthropogenic factors on their petrographic composition in space(on an 800 km stretch) and *** was determined b. modal analysis of three sand-size fractions using a polarizing optical microscope and calculated for each sample("standard sand" = Sst).The watershed is composed mainly of endogenic(Massif Central) and sedimentary(southern Parisian b.sin) rocks.b.set sands collected in channels for different water flows in 1996 show that Sst compositions vary b. only 5%.Present-day sands in the Upper Loire and Middle Loire have very high petrographic immaturity comparing to others worldwide fluvial sands,although b.o-climatic conditions favor sand maturation b. source-rock weathering in the *** shows the strong impact of the Massif Central on sediment yield due to relief rejuvenation as a consequence of the formation of the Alps during the *** sands stored during the Weichselian and the Holocene in the Middle Loire floodplain,although partly weathered since their deposition,show higher inputs from the endogenic rocks of the Massif Central than present-day *** can b. explained b. Weichselian periglacial conditions and the development of crop farming since the Neolithic,which favored mechanical erosion,particularly in the Massif Central which is characterized b. a cold,humid climate and steep *** upstream-downstream change in the composition of presently deposited sand is low in the diked *** shows however that b.salt and some heavy mineral grains are vulnerab.e to ab.asion during transport and indicates a marked sediment yield from ancient sediment stored in the *** is in line with the high incision of the river b.d over the last 150 years partly due to dam construction and aggregate mining.
