Tilted global solar irradiance in Bah.ain: an experimental study

In th. present work, tilted global solar irradiance data are presented and analysed, measured for a period of 1 year on th. campus of Bah.ain Polytech.ic, Kingdom of Bah.ain, from both.a fixed ph.tovoltaic panel and a moving one via a two-axis solar tracker. Th. fixed panel faces south.with.an angle of 26 degrees with.respect to th. h.rizontal, coinciding with.th. local geograph.cal latitude. Th. second panel is moved by two motors, controlled by a global positioning system and suitable software so th.t th. Sun's rays are perpendicular to th. panel surface. A pyranometer is installed on each.panel, recording th. tilted global solar irradiance, stored by using a data logger. Th. analysis of th. data obtained sh.ws a 33% solar energy gain on an annual basis for th. moving panel (2780 versus 2088 kWh.m2 on th. fixed panel). More importantly, in June, wh.n th. energy demand in Bah.ain is elevated due to th. increased residential c.oling loads, th. solar energy received by th. moving panel is 54.7% h.gh.r compared with.th.t of th. fixed panel. on a percentage basis, th. increase in solar energy from th. moving panel is profound in th. early morning and late evening h.urs. Moreover, th. reduction in th. solar energy received by th. fixed panel from May to June does not appear in th. moving panel because of th. adjustable orientation of th. latter. Th.ough.ut th. year, th. mean daily solar power varies between 0.37 and 0.56 kW/m2 for th. fixed panel, and 0.45 and 0.70 kW/m2 for th. moving panel. In winter, solar energy fluctuations are elevated due to erratic weath.r conditions th.t present a peak standard deviation of 28% of th. corresponding mean. Th. data presented are useful for potential solar investments in Gulf countries. Nd^(3+)-doped tellurite glasses are promising materials for th.rmometers based on th. fluorescence intensity ratio(FIR)***,at h.gh.Nd^(3+)concentrations,energy transfer(ET)processes such.as optical reabsorption and c.oss-relaxation can affect th. Nd^(3+)emission,wh.ch.h.s been little explored in th. ***,th. present work investigated th. use of Nd^(3+)-doped tellurite glass(samples doped with.Nd^(3+)at 0.2 mol%,0.5 mol%,2.0 mol%,and 4.0 mol%)in fluorescence th.rmometers,in th. temperature range from 299 to 371 *** results indicate a strong dependence of th. FIR parameters on th. Nd^(3+)concentration,due to ch.nges in th. emission band profiles caused by optical reabsorption of th. Nd^(3+)emissions and c.oss-relaxation processes.A decrease of th. relative sensitivity of th. ratio^(4)F_(5/2)→^(4)I_(9/2)/^(4)F_(3/2)→^(4)I_(9/2)is observed for samples doped with.h.gh.r amounts of Nd^(3+).Th. maximum relative sensitivity at 299 K is 3.00%/K,wh.ch.is th. h.gh.st value among th. reported Nd^(3+)ions.

Investigation of h.AR2 antagonists as a potential strategy to modulate bovine leukocytes

Background Dairy cows experiencing ketosis after calving suffer greater disease incidence and are at greater risk of leaving th. h.rd. In vitro administration of beta-h.droxybutyric acid(Bh.A;th. primary blood ketone) h.s inh.bitory effects on th. function of bovine leukocytes. Bh.A is a ligand of h.AR2 and th. activation of th.se receptors promotes an anti-inflammatory response wh.ch.may be related with.immunosuppression observed in transition dairy cattle. Th. objective of th.s study was to identify and test antagonists for h.AR2 in bovine immune cells cultured with.*** We observed expression of h.AR2 at th. protein level with.n lymph.cytes, monocytes, and granulocytes. Th. proportion of cells expressing h.AR2 tended to be greater in mid-lactation compared to early lactation cows;th. increase was a result of increased proportion of T and B cells expressing h.AR2. Stimulation of h.AR2 with.niacin or Bh.A promoted ca^(2+) mobilization in neutroph.ls and mononuclear cells. Mononuclear cells treated with.Bh.A h.d diminish.d intracellular ca^(2+) responses wh.n h.AR2 was knocked down by si RNA silencing, indicating ca^(2+) mobilization was mediated by h.AR2 signaling. Two candidate antagonists for h.AR2, synth.sized from niacin(NA-1 and NA-5), were tested;monocytes and neutroph.ls pre-treated with.NA-1 and NA-5 h.d reduced ca^(2+) mobilization after incubation with.Bh.A. Furth.rmore, NA-5 but not NA-1 prevented Bh.A-associated reductions in cyclic *** We demonstrated th.t h.AR2 is present on bovine leukocytes and h.s greater expression later in lactation. We confirmed th.t Bh.A and niacin derived h.AR2 antagonists alter bovine leukocyte activity. our results demonstrate th.t both.Bh.A and niacin affect bovine leukocyte ca^(2+) mobilization in a h.AR2-dependent manner.

“Yin-Yang ph.losoph.” for th. design of anticancer drug delivery nanoparticles

Understanding th. in vivo transport process provides guidelines for designing ideal nanoparticles (NPs) with.h.gh.r efficacy and fewer off-target effects. Many fac.ors, such.as particle size, morph.logy, surface potential, structural stability, and etc., may influence th. delivering process of NPs due to th. existence of various ph.siological barriers with.n th. body. h.rein, we summarise th. distinct influences of NP ph.sicoch.mical properties on th. four consecutive in vivo transport steps: (1) navigating with.bloodstream with.n blood vessels, (2) transport ac.oss vasculature walls into tumour tissues, (3) intratumoural transport th.ough.th. interstitial space, and (4) cellular uptake & intracellular delivery by cancerous cells. We found th.t th. ph.losoph. beh.nd th. current consensus for NP design h.s certain similarities to th. “Yin-Yang” th.ory in traditional ch.nese culture. Almost all ph.sicoch.mical properties, regardless of big or small sizes, long or sh.rt length. positive or negative zeta potentials, are double-edged swords. Th. balance of potential benefits and side effects, drug selectivity and accessibility sh.uld be fully considered wh.n optimising particle design, similar to th. “Yin-Yang h.rmony”. Th.s paper presents a compreh.nsive review of th. advancements in NPs research. focusing on th.ir distinct features in tumour targeting, drug delivery, and cell uptake. Additionally, it deliberates on future developmental trends and potential obstacles, th.reby aiming to uncover th. ways th.se ch.racteristics influence th. Slits h.ve been widely used in laser-plasma interactions as plasma optical components for generating h.gh.h.rmonic ligh. and controlling laser-driven particle ***,we propose and demonstrate th.t periodic th.n slits can be regarded as a new breed of optical elements for efficient focusing and guiding of intense laser *** fundamental ph.sics of intense laser interaction with.th.n slits is studied,and it is revealed th.t relativistic effects can lead to enh.nced laser focusing far beyond th. pure diffractive focusing *** addition,th. interaction of an intense laser pulse with.periodic th.n slits makes it feasible to ach.eve multifold enh.ncement in both.laser intensity and energy transfer efficiency compared with.conventional *** results provide a novel meth.d for manipulating ultra-intense laser pulses and sh.uld be of interest for many laser-based applications.

Empath. allows h.mans and oth.r animals to sh.re th. emotional state of anoth.r, adopting th.t individual’s perspective on a given situation. Th.s ability is fundamental for species living in groups. h.lping beh.vior in laboratory animals h.s been used to study empath.. In th.s test, subjects are exposed to a conspecific th.t is trapped and learn to open th. cage to release th. oth.r animal. h.wever, th. interpretation of h.lping beh.vior as an emph.tically motivated action is still controversial. h.re we review th. studies th.t use th. h.lping beh.vioral test proposed by Ben-Ami Bartal and colleagues in 2011 to better understand motivational fac.ors for th.s beh.vior. In addition, we compare meth.dological aspects of th.se studies. In conclusion, h.lping beh.vior can be driven by empath., but oth.r fac.ors such.as th. desire for social contact and learning components cannot be ruled out as motivators. In addition, studies focused on evaluating neurobiological mech.nisms underlying h.lping beh.vior in laboratory rodents can h.lp elucidate th. fac.ors involved in releasing th. trapped co-specific.
