Insight into the mechanisms of trichloronitromethane formation by vacuum ultraviolet: QSAR model and FTIcR-MS analysis

Vacuum ultraviolet(VUV) photolysis is recognized as an environmental-friendly treatment process. Nitrate(NO-3) and natural organic matter(NOM) are widely present in water *** investigated trichloronitromethane(TcNM) formation during chlorination after VUV photolysis, because TcNM is an unregulated highly toxic disinfection byproduct. In this study:(1) we found reactive nitrogen species that is generated under VUV photolysis of NO-3react with organic matter to form nitrogen-containing compounds and subsequently form TcNM during chlorination;(2) we found the mere presence of 0.1 mmol/L NO-3can result in the formation of up to 63.96 μg/L TcNM;(3) we found the changes in pH(6.0-8.0), chloride(1-4 mmol/L), and bicarbonate(1-4 mmol/L) cannot effectively diminish TcNM formation;and,(4) we established the quantitative structure-activity relationship(QSAR) model,which indicated a linear relationship between TcNM formation and the Hammett constant(σ) of model compounds;and,(5) we characterized TcNM precursors in water matrix after VUV photolysis and found 1161 much more nitrogen-containing compounds with higher aromaticity were generated. Overall, this study indicates more attention should be paid to reducing the formation risk of TcNM when applying VUV photolysis process at scale.

Turmeric (curcuma longa L.) is one of the essential condiments all over the world. Turmeric is an important medicine in the eastern medical systems and its therapeutic properties have been well recorded. Curcumin, commonly called diferuloyl methane (hydrophobic polyphenol), was studied extensively for its biological properties. Sri Lankan turmeric records relatively higher percentage (up to 9%) of curcumin. The bioactive compounds with insecticidal or pesticidal activity were studied from the Sri Lankan turmeric as there is an increasing demand for natural products to control ticks and fleas in dogs against the chemicals that induce some secondary effects. Fifty grams (50 g) of dried coarsely ground turmeric (curcuma longa L.) was subjected to sequential extractions with four different solvents in ascending order of polarity using Soxhlet apparatus. The treatments consisted of solvent-fractionated turmeric extracts from hexane, dichloromethane (CH2Cl2), ethyl acetate (EtOAc) and Methanol (CH3OH) dissolved in the water to 100 ppm. Nonalcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH)—the severe histological form of nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD)—is regarded as a major health problem worldwide (1,2). The disease can progress to liver cirrhosis and eventually to hepatocellular carcinoma (1,3). Treatment of NASH and NASH-fibrosis is thus increasingly being given priority in the clinical field. Yet, these efforts face challenges not only related to the design and validation of novel pharmacological agents, but also to the need to optimize treatment options as well as improve access to therapies. In fact, while many drugs are currently being tested for safety and efifcacy, only a few approved options for the treatment of NASH presently exist (4,5). It is thus expected that, in the near future, emphasis will be given to selecting the right drug for treating NASH patients from a wide spectrum of treatment choices. Hence, identiifcation of early predictors of treatment response represents an unmet and relevant need.

Ductus arteriosus is the communication between the proximal aorta and the pulmonary artery which diverts well oxygenated blood from the placenta to the systemic circulation bypassing the fluid filled lung in the fetal circulation. Therefore it is very essential for fetal survival. After birth, in term infants the ductus usually closes within the first day of life, starting with functional closure followed by anatomical closure by vascular remodeling.

Improvement of VIS and IR camouflage properties by impregnating cotton fabric with PVB/IF-WS_(2)

In order to examine the possibility to improve its camouflage properties standard cotton fabric with camouflage print was impregnated with poly(vinyl butyral),PVB and fullerene-like nanoparticles of tungsten disulfide,PVB/IF-WS_(2).FTIR analysis excluded any possible chemical interaction of IF-WS_(2) with PVB and the *** camouflage behavior of the impregnated fabric has been examined firstly in the VIS part of the *** reflection,specular gloss and color coordinates were measured for three different shades(black,brown and dark green).Thermal imaging was applied to examine the camouflage abilities of this impregnation in IR part of the *** obtained results show that PVB/IF-WS_(2) impregnation system induced enhacement of the materials camouflage properties,*** IF-WS_(2) have a positive effect on spectrophotometric characteristics of the fabric.

以巢湖典型支流丰乐河流域为例,利用分布式水文模型ATHYS对流域降雨—径流过程进行模拟,以期为丰乐河流域水土保持、防洪、水资源利用和非点源污染防治等提供科学依据。ATHYS模型将流域分为大小相同的空间小单元,以库模型进行产流计算,以滞后演算法(lag and route)方法进行汇流计算,并以Nash and Sutcliffe指数作为检验模拟结果的标准,模拟流域出口断面日径流量,初步分析流域径流实测值与模拟值的年际变化。模型模拟结果表明,在率定期和验证期模拟与实测径流量的总Nash and Sutcliffe值(Nash值)都可以达到0.80以上,相关系数均可达0.89以上。除了部分峰值和基流,模型能较好地模拟丰乐河的径流过程。模型模拟径流总量的相对误差在率定期为23.1%,验证期为34.6%。流域降雨量、径流量的年内、年际变化均比较明显,径流实测值和模拟值的年际变化也都比较大。综合来看,模型比较适用于所研究流域的日径流模拟。

Novel technique for measurement of coating layer thickness of fine and porous particles using focused ion beam

A novel technique for the measurement of the coating layer thickness of fine particles was developed in this work based on cross-sectioning of micrometre-sized single coated particles using focused ion beam (FIB) milling. This technique was tested on two batches of aerogel particles coated with thin coatings in a spouted bed. The FIB milling procedure consisted of two steps. First, the desired part of the coated particle was removed using a high ion beam current. The resulting cross-sectioned area was then polished using a lower ion beam current to make the cross-section clearly visible. The FIB milling process was controlled with simultaneous scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Afterwards, the coating layer thickness was evaluated using the SEM images. The coating layer was successfully applied on the porous aerogel microparticles in the spouted bed. The coating uniformity of the highly porous particles increased with increasing sprayed coating solution amount, with up to 91% of the particle pores being covered. The FIB-cross-sectioning technique using an ion beam of 2.50 nA for the first milling and 0.43 nA for polishing of the surface resulted in successful generation of cross-sections of representative particles with a visible particle core and coating layer. A coating layer thickness of approximately 700 nm was achieved on particles with sizes of below 45 μm.
