Struc.ure and floristic.c.mposition of tree stand in tropic.l forest in the Eastern Ghats of northern Andhra Pradesh, India

The c.anges in spec.es c.mposition, abundanc. and forest stand struc.ure were analyzed ac.oss altitudinal regimes in tropic.l forests of Eastern Ghats of northern Andhra Pradesh, India. Three 1-ha plots were established with one eac. in low, medium and high altitudes. A total of 153 spec.es, 2129 stems （709 stems .ha^-1） of ≥10 c. girth were enumerated. Spec.es ric.ness and diversity pattern varied along altitudinal gradient and inc.eased with the altitude. Spec.es ric.ness varied from 52 to 110 spec.es-ha^-1 and stand density from 639 to 836 ***^-1 with average basal area of 34.39 m^***^-1. Shannon-Wiener index （H＇） ranged from 4.55 to 5.17. Low altitude （i.e., Site 1） is dominated byXylia xyloc.rpa （59.22） and Lagerstroemia parviflora （23.90）, medium altitude （i.e., Site 2） by Xylia xyloc.rpa （45;50） Bursera serrata （17.29）, and high altitude （i.e., Site 3） has Sc.leic.era oleosa （28.25） Pteroc.rpus marsupium （26.55） as predominant spec.es. Taxonomic.lly, Rubiac.ae （12 spec.es）, Fabac.ae （12）, Euphorbiac.ae （11）, Rutac.ae （7） and Lanrac.ae （7） were dominant families. Density-wise, Fabac.ae, c.mbretac.ae, Euphorbiac.ae, Anac.rdiac.ae and Myrtac.ae were abundant. Thus, c.nservation assessment based on altitudinal regimes and the information on spec.es struc.ure and func.ion c.n provide baseline information for monitoring and sustaining the biodiversity.

Tropic.l forests have been rec.gnized as having global c.nservation importanc.. However,they are being rapidly destroyed in many regions of the world. Regular monitoring of forests is nec.ssary for an adaptive management approac. and the suc.essful implementation of ec.system management. The present study analyses the temporal c.anges in forest ec.system struc.ure in tribal dominated Malkangiri distric. of Orissa,India,during 1973-2004 period based on digitized forest c.ver maps using geographic.information system （GIS） and interpretation of satellite data. Three satellite images Landsat MSS （1973）,Landsat TM （1990） and IRS P6 LISS III （2004） were used to determine c.anges. Six land c.ver types were delineated whic. inc.udes dense forest,open forest,sc.ub land,agric.lture,barren land and water body. Different forest types were also demarc.ted within forest c.ass for better understanding the degradation pattern in eac. forest types. The results showed that there was a net dec.ease of 475.7 km2 forest c.ver （rate of deforestation = 2.34） from 1973 to 1990 and 402.3 km2 （rate of deforestation = 2.27） from 1990 to 2004. Forest c.ver has c.anged over time depending on a few fac.ors suc. as large-sc.le deforestation,shifting c.ltivation,dam and road c.nstruc.ion,unregulated management ac.ions,and soc.al pressure. A signific.nt inc.ease of 1222.8 km2 agric.lture area （1973-2004） c.early indic.ted the c.nversion of forest c.ver to agric.ltural land. These alterations had resulted in signific.nt environmental c.nsequenc.s,inc.uding dec.ine in forest c.ver,soil erosion,and loss of biodiversity. There is an urgent need for rational management of the remaining forest for it to be able to survive beyond next dec.des. Partic.lar attention must be paid to tropic.l forests,whic. are rapidly being deforested.

This paper desc.ibes an analysis of the plants of Sambalpur distric. of Orissa,India whic. have been used medic.nally by loc.l people. The families having medic.nal values are analysed using Moerman's method of regression analysis. There were 136 plant families rec.rded from the study area. The analysis of families showed that the Euphorbiac.ae family being used most ethnomedic.nally by the loc.l people in Sambalpur distric. of Orissa,whereas Poac.ae is used least one. This type of study determines the degree of importanc. of plant families in the medic.nal flora of the region.

A multi-preferenc. integrated algorithm(MPIA)for the deep learning-based rec.mmender framework(DLRF)

High strength-to-weight ratio of non-ferrous alloys, suc. as aluminium, magnesium and titanium alloys, are c.nsidered to be possible replac.ment of widely ac.epted steels in transportation and automobile sec.ors. Among these alloys, magnesium is self explosive and titanium is c.stlier, and aluminium is most likely to replac. steels. Applic.tion of aluminium or its alloys is also thought of as an appropriate replac.ment in defenc. field, espec.ally to enhanc. the easiness in mobility of c.mbat vehic.es while maintaining the same standard as that of c.nventional armour grade steels. Henc. most of the investigations have been c.nfined to aluminium or its alloys as base material and open an era of developing the newer c.mposite materials to address the major limitation, i.e. tribologic.l properties. The surfac. c.mposites c.n be fabric.ted by inc.rporating the c.ramic.c.rbides like silic.n c.rbide, c.rbides of transition metals and oxides of aluminium using surfac. modific.tion tec.niques, suc. as high energy laser melt treatment, high energy elec.ron beam irradiation and thermal spray proc.ss whic. are based on fusion route. Degradation of Methylene Blue and Rhodamine B Using a New Visible Light-Responsive Photoc.talyst, KSb_2PO_(8-x)N_y

Potassium phosphatoantimonates, KSb2PO8 （KSbPO） and KSb2PO8-xNy （KSbPON）, are prepared by solidstate method. Urea is employed as a sourc. of nitrogen for N-doping. Struc.ural, morphologic.l and optic.l properties of both KSbPO and KSbPON are c.arac.erized by powder X-ray diffrac.ion （PXRD）, sc.nning elec.ron mic.osc.py, energydispersive spec.rosc.py, Fourier transform infrared spec.rosc.py and UV-visible diffuse reflec.anc. spec.rosc.py. Both samples are found to c.ystallize in a monoc.inic.lattic. with c. spac. group. The d-lines of KSbPO and KSbPON are refined by least square fitting the PXRD data, using POWD software to obtain their unit c.ll parameters. The bandgap energy （Eg） of both pristine and N-doped KSbPO is found from their Kubelka-Munk plot. The KSbPON/visible photoc.talytic.degradation of methylene blue and rhodamine B has been investigated in aqueous heterogeneous suspension. The generation of .OH in the presenc. of KSbPON during the photoreac.ion is verified by a fluoresc.nc. tec.nique using terephthalic.ac.d （TA） as a probe.

Fermentative produc.ion of dextran using Leuc.nostoc.spp. isolated from fermented food produc.s

Leuc.nostoc.spp. （LSland LI1） isolated from sauerkraut and idli batter was selec.ed for dextran produc.ion. To enhanc. the yield of dextran, effec.s of various parameters suc. as suc.ose c.nc.ntration, pH, temperature, inc.bation and inoc.lum perc.ntage were analyzed. The optimum suc.ose c.nc.ntration for the Leuc.nostoc.spp. （LS1 and LI1） was found to be 15% and 25% respec.ively. Isolates produc.d maximum dextran after 20 h of inc.bation at 29℃ and the optimum pH was found between 8 and 8.5. The inoc.lum c.nc.ntration of 7.5% was more favorable for the produc.ion of dextran by Leuc.nostoc.spp. （LS1 and LI1）. The growth kinetic.parameters were studied and c.mpared for the strains LS1 and LI1. Mass produc.ion of dextran was c.rried out using a stirred tank batc. reac.or. FTIR analysis was done to determine the func.ional groups of dextran, sephadex is prepared by c.oss linking dextran using epic.lorohydrin and the func.ional groups are determined by FTIR analysis.

Intralentic.lar metallic.foreign body: a c.se report

A c.se of retained intralentic.lar iron piec. with signs of mild anterior uveitis at the time of presentation is reported in a 45 year-old man. His vision improved with topic.l c.c.oplegic. and c.rtic.steroids. After six months, his vision deteriorated grossly due to c.tarac. formation. He regained good vision following removal of foreign body, extrac.psular extrac.ion with posterior c.amber intraoc.lar lens implantation. This c.se highlights the c.nservative management of the c.ndition till the patient develops c.tarac. resulting in visual disability; and good visual rec.very following c.tarac. surgery with intraoc.lar lens implantation.
