Studies on Rec.very Effic.enc.es of Phenols from Phenol Frac.ion Using Alkali Treatment

Experiments were c.nduc.ed for the extrac.ion of phenols from the phenol frac.ion obtained from the c.al tar distillate. The phenol frac.ion for the present investigation has been proc.red from Visakhapatnam Steel Plant, Visakhapatnam whose c.mposition is known. The phenol frac.ion from c.al tar distillate c.n be treated for extrac.ing phenols using c.ustic.soda. An attempt has been made to find out whether the existing prac.ic. of using only 8%-15% c.n be modified by inc.easing the strength of sodium hydroxide and also explore the possibilities of substituting the sodium hydroxide with KOH as an extrac.ant. The different streams of liquids obtained during experimentation have been analyzed by gas c.romatograph. Salient features of the study are that higher c.nc.ntrations of the alkali signific.ntly improved the separation effic.enc.es of phenols and also regenerate the phenolate with higher phenol c.ntent. Inc.ease in the alkali strength has greatly improved the separation as well as the phenol c.ntent in the regenerated phenols. Disposal of effluents c.ntaining phenols may lead to environmental problem of ground water pollution and the study throws a light on the removal of phenols from the effluents to the extent possible by using higher strength alkali solutions.
