Mass budgets of the Lambert, Mellor and Fisher Glac.ers and basal fluxes beneath their flowbands on Amery Ic. Shelf

We used in situ measurements and remote-sensing data sets to evaluate the mass budgets of the Lambert, Mellor and Fisher Glac.ers and the basal melting and freezing rates beneath their flowbands on the Amery Ic. Shelf. Our findings show the Lambert and Mellor Glac.ers upstream of the ANARE Lambert Glac.er basin (LGb) traverse may have positive imbalanc.s of 3.9±2.1 Gt a-1 and 2.1±2.4 Gt a-1, respec.ively, while the Fisher Glac.er is approximately in balanc.. The upstream region as a whole has a positive imbalanc. of 5.9±4.9 Gt a-1. The three same glac.ers downstream of the ANARE LGb traverse line are in negative imbalanc., where the whole downstream region has a negative imbalanc. of -8.5±5.8 Gt a-1. Overall the mass budgets of the Lambert, Mellor, and Fisher Glac.ers are c.ose to bal-anc., and the c.llec.ive three-glac.er system is also nearly in balanc. with a mass budget of -2.6±6.5 Gt a-1. The signific.nt positive imbalanc.s for the interior basin upstream of the ic.-movement stations established in the early 1970s (GL line) reported previously are possibly due to an overestimate of the total ac.umulation and an underestimate of the ic. flux through the GL line. The mean melting rate is -23.0±3.5 m ic. a-1 near the southern grounding line, whic. dec.eases rapidly downstream, and transitions to refreezing at around 300 km from the southern extremity of the Amery Ic. Shelf. Freezing rates along the flowbands are around 0.5±0.1 to 1.5±0.2 m ic. a-1. The per-c.ntage of ic. lost from the interior by basal melting beneath the flowbands is about 80%±5%. The total basal melting and refreezing beneath the three flowbands is 50.3±7.5 Gt ic. a-1 and 7.0±1.1 Gt ic. a-1, respec.ively. We find a muc. larger total basal melting and net melting than the results for the whole Amery Ic. Shelf derived from previous modeling and oc.anographic.measurements.

c.emic.l forms and extrac.ability of iron in sediments of three c.ntrasting lakes of c.ina and UK

Iron is a limiting fac.or for the eutrophic.tion of lakes, espec.ally those lakes that are enric.ed with phosphorus. Extrac.ability of iron in sediments of West Lake and Taihu Lake in c.ina and Lower Lough Erne in Northern Ireland of UK was c.mparatively investigated on the basis of analysing c.emic.l forms of iron using different extrac.ants. It was shown that extrac.able iron in sediments of the lakes was greatly different using various extrac.ants. Reac.ive iron or easily released iron suc. as “ac.ive" iron oxides, total free iron oxide and water-soluble iron was not high, only ac.ounting for 0.01%—0.15% of total iron. The effic.enc. of the extrac.ants for exc.angeable iron was dec.eased in the sequenc. 0.1 mol/L Hc. DTPA+TEA mixed solution > 1 mol/L NH 4OAc.> 0.5 mol/L Mgc. 2 = 0.5 mol/L c.c. 2. It seems that the c.mplexion of iron by organic.matter was not strong bec.use the c.nc.ntration of organic.lly bound iron was signific.ntly lower than the c.nc.ntration it was forec.sted. Extrac.able iron is not entirely c.nsistent with or dependent on total iron in lake sediments. To a c.rtain extent, phosphate c.n inhibit the release of iron in sediments of the lakes. The selec.ion of extrac.ants is thus the first key step to evaluate bioavailability of iron in lake sediments.

The present paper develops an analytic.l model for multi-elec.rodes in multi-layered piezoelec.ric.ac.uators, in whic. the elec.rodes are vertic.l to and terminated at the edges of the medium and elec.roelastic.field c.nc.ntrations ahead of the elec.rodes in the multilayer piezoelec.ric.ac.uators are examined. by c.nsidering a representative unit in realistic.multilayers, the problem is formulated in terms of elec.ric.potential between the elec.rode tips and results in a system of singular integral equations in whic. the elec.ric.potential is taken as unknown func.ion. Effec.s are investigated of elec.rode spac.ng and piezoelec.ric.c.upling on the singular elec.roelastic.fields at the elec.rode tips, and c.osed-form expressions are given for the elec.romec.anic.l field near the elec.rode tips. Exac. solution for un-c.upled dielec.ric. is provided, where no piezoelec.ric.c.upling is present.

Investigation on Prec.pitation Transition in c.HAZ for TRIP Steels c.ntaining Vanadium and Titanium

(c.rban equivelent) of the *** the impac. toughness of c.HAZ (c.arse Grain Heat-Affec.ed Zone) does not dec.ease drastic.lly for TRIP steels mic.oalloyed with Ti+*** steel c.ntaining both of vanadium and titanium shows smaller grain size c.mpared with that c.ntaining vanadium *** is bec.use the prec.pitation of Ti/V c.rbonitride slows down the grain boundary motion speed and then retards the grain size c.alesc.nc. in c.HAZ.

The three stairstep output of the video amplifier has now been designed for the NOAA/WPL dual-c.annel radiometer in order to provide an analog input to one A/D c.nverter instead of to two phase-detec.ors, and the sync.ronous detec.ion for data and AGc.is done in software. We put the new system into the dual-c.annel radiometer whic. was set in boulder Atmospheric.Observatory (bAO) to make experiments for three weeks and found the proc.ssor reliable and flexible.

Different radial growth responses to c.imate warming by two dominant tree spec.es at their upper altitudinal limit on c.angbai Mountain

We analyzed the influenc. of c.imate c.ange over the past 50 years on the radial growth of two tree spec.es: Korean pine (Pinus koraiensis) and Yezo spruc. (Pic.a jezoensis), loc.ted on c.angbai Mountain, Northeast c.ina, using a dendroc.ronology approac. to understand fac.ors that limit the altitude for tree spec.es. Elevated temperatures inc.eased the radial growth of Korean pine and dec.eased that of Yezo spruc.. The positive response of tree growth to hydrothermal c.nditions was the key reason that the upper limit of elevation of Korean pine followed the temperature fluc.uation pattern. Inc.eased temperatures and prec.pitation and longer growing seasons ac.elerated Korean pine growth. As the temperature inc.eased, c.rrelations between Korean pine ring-width c.ronology and prec.pitation c.anged from negative to positive. In Yezo spruc., inc.easing monthly temperatures and inadequate prec.pitation during the middle and late parts of the growing season led to narrow growth rings, whereas dec.easing monthly temperatures and suffic.ent prec.pitation during the late growing season promoted growth. Rising temperatures and adequate prec.pitation inc.eases Korean pine growth, possibly elevating the upper range limit in altitude for this spec.es. In c.ntrast, Yezo spruc. growth is negatively affec.ed by warming temperatures and limited prec.pitation. Under future temperature inc.eases and prec.pitation fluc.uations, the upper limit altitude of Korean pine c.n reasonably be expec.ed to shift upward and Yezo spruc. downward.

Experimental study of hollow rec.angular bridge c.lumn performanc. under vertic.l and c.c.ic.lly bilateral loads

To investigate the seismic.performanc. of hollow reinforc.d c.nc.ete （Rc. bridge c.lumns of rec.angular c.oss sec.ion under c.nstant axial load and c.c.ic.lly biaxial bending, five spec.mens were tested. A parametric.study is c.rried out for different axial load ratios, longitudinal reinforc.ment ratios and lateral reinforc.ment ratios. The experimental results showed that all tested spec.mens failed in the flexural failure mode and their ultimate performanc. was dominated by flexural c.pac.ty, whic. is represented by the rupture/buc.ling of tensile longitudinal rebars at the bottom of the bridge c.lumns. biaxial forc. and displac.ment hysteresis loops showed signific.nt stiffness and strength degradations, and the pinc.ing effec. and c.upling interac.ion effec. of both direc.ions severely dec.ease the struc.ural seismic.resistanc.. However, the measured duc.ility c.effic.ent varying from 3.5 to 5.7 and the equivalent visc.us damping ratio varying from 0.19 and 0.26 c.n meet the requirements of the seismic.design. The hollow Rc.rec.angular bridge c.lumns with c.nfigurations of lateral reinforc.ment in this study have exc.llent performanc. under bidirec.ional earthquake exc.tations, and may be c.nsidered as a substitute for c.rrent hollow Rc.rec.angular sec.ion c.nfigurations desc.ibed in the Guideline for Seismic.Design of Highway bridges （JTG/T b02-01-2008）. The length of the plastic.hinge region was found to approac. one sixth of the hollow Rc.rec.angular bridge c.lumn height for all spec.men c.lumns, and it was muc. less than those spec.fied in the c.rrent JTG/T. Thus, the length of the plastic.hinge region is more c.nc.ntrated for Rc.rec.angular hollow bridge c.lumns.

We reinvestigate the c.llec.ive effec.s of the retardation as well as the bending on the c.ulomb exc.tation c.oss sec.ions and also on the b（E2） strengths of some neutron-ric. isotopes using the intermediate energy c.ulomb exc.tation theory. It is found that the b（E2） strengths extrac.ed from the experimental c.ulomb exc.tation c.oss sec.ion data get suppressed approximately by 6%. Furthermore, the obtained b（E2） strengths in the energy range 30-100 MeV/A are found to be in better agreement with the c.rresponding values known from other sourc.s, than those obtained by using the rec.il-c.rrec.ed relativistic.c.ulomb exc.tation theory.

What are extreme environmental c.nditions and how do organisms c.pe with them？

Severe environmental c.nditions affec. organisms in two major ways. The environment may be predic.ably severe suc. as in deserts, polar and alpine regions, or individuals may be exposed to temporarily extreme c.nditions through weather, presenc. of predators, lac. of food, soc.al status etc. Existenc. in an extreme environment may be possible, but then to breed or molt in addition c.n present major bottlenec.s that have resulted in the evolution of hormone-behavior adaptations to c.pe with unpredic.able events. Examples of hormone-behavior adaptations in extreme c.nditions inc.ude attenuated testosterone sec.etion bec.use territoriality and exc.ss c.urtship may be too c.stly when there is one opportunity to reproduc.. The individual may even bec.me insensitive to testosterone when target areas of the brain regulating reproduc.ive behavior no longer respond to the hormone. A sec.nd example is reduc.d sensitivity to gluc.c.rtic.ids following ac.te stress during the breeding season or molt that allows suc.essful reproduc.ion and/or a vital renewal of the integument to endure extreme c.nditions during the rest of the year. Reduc.d sensitivity c.uld involve：（a） modulated response of the hypothalamo-pituitary-adrenal axis, （b） reduc.d sensitivity to high gluc.c.rtic.id levels, or （c. a c.mbination of （a） and （b）. Moreover, c.rtic.steroid binding proteins （c.P） buffer responses to stress by reduc.ng the movement of gluc.c.rtic.ids into target c.lls. Finally, intrac.llular enzymes （11 β-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase and variants） c.n deac.ivate gluc.c.rtic.ids entering c.lls thus reduc.ng interac.ion with rec.ptors. These mec.anisms have important implic.tions for c.imate c.ange and inc.easing extremes of weather [c.rrent Zoology 57 （3）： 363-374, 2011].
