Attributing biologic.l explanations to observed ec.geographic.l and ec.logic.l patterns require eliminating potential statistic.l and sampling artifac.s as alternative explanations of the observed ***,we assess the role of sample size,statistic.l power,and geographic.inc.usivity on the general validity and statistic.l signific.nc. of relationships between body size and latitude for 3 well-studied spec.es of *** extend those analyses to emphasize the importanc. of using statistic.lly robust data in determining mac.oec.logic.l *** examined intraspec.fic.trends in body size with latitude in c.elydra serpentina,c.rysemys pic.a,and Trac.emys sc.ipts using Pearson's c.rrelations,diagnostic.tests for influential points,and *** data were insuffic.ent to asc.rtain a latitudinal trend in body size for *** or *** was a signific.nt relationship for ***,however,resampling analyses show that,on average,16 of the 23 available independent populations were needed to demonstrate a signific.nt relationship and that at least 20 of 23 populations were required to obtain a statistic.lly powerful c.rrelation between body size and ***,restric.ing the latitudes of populations resampled shows that body size trends of *** were largely due to leveraging effec.s of populations at the edge of the spec.es *** results suggest that broad inferenc.s regarding ec.logic.l trends in body size should be made with c.ution until underlying(intraspec.fic.patterns in body size c.n be statistic.lly and c.nc.usively demonstrated.

To study the effec. of the textural properties of roc.s on their c.ushing feature, the distribution of partic.e size, the texture, grinding and c.ushing c.arac.eristic. of the roc.s were investigated, and the relations among them were then analyzed using statistic.l methods. The relations between the textural properties and the physic.l and mec.anic.l features of roc.s were determined.

We employ a mec.anic.l model of sarc.mere to quantitatively investigate how adenosine triphosphate (ATP) c.nc.ntration affec.s motor forc. regulation during skeletal musc.e c.ntrac.ion. Our simulation indic.tes that there c.n be negative c.oss-bridges resisting c.ntrac.ion within the sarc.mere and higher ATP c.nc.ntration would dec.ease the resistanc. forc. from negative c.oss-bridges by promoting their timely detac.ment. It is revealed that the motor forc. is well regulated only when ATP c.nc.ntration is above a c.rtain level. These predic.ions may provide insights into the role of ATP in regulating c.ordination among multiple motors.

A study was c.nduc.ed on c.mbisols in Northern Germany to analyze the effec. of fast growing trees （Salix and Populus spp.） used in agroforestry on soil c.emic.l and physic.l properties and also on endo- and ec.omyc.rrhizal c.lonization of the fine roots. Representative plots of three trials, Giilzow （GUL）, Vipperow （VIP） and Rostoc. （ROS）, were used to measure the topsoil inventories at the very beginning and after six （GUL）, seven （VIP） and ten （ROS） years of afforestation with fast growing trees. The effec. on soil organic.c.rbon, plant available nutrients, reac.ion, bulk density, porosity and water c.nditions was analyzed, Arable soils without tree c.ppic. were used as c.ntrols. Additionally, the endoand ec.omyc.rrhizal c.lonization of two Salix and two Populus c.ones were investigated at one site （GUL） in 2002. The amounts of organic.c.rbon in the topsoil inc.eased signific.ntly （P 〈 0.01） presumably induc.d by leaf and root litter and also by the lac. of tillage. The soil bulk density signific.ntly dec.eased and the porosity of the soil inc.eased signific.ntly （both P 〈 0.01）. The proportion of medium pores in the soil also rose signific.ntly （P 〈 0.05 and 0.01）. Generally, afforestation of arable soils improved soil water retention. Ec.omyc.rrhizas dominated the myc.rrhizal formation of the Salix and Populus c.ones, with the ac.umulation of organic.matter in the topsoil suspec.ed of supporting the ec.omyc.rrhizal formation. Thus, agroforestry with Salix and Populus spp. c.nspic.ously affec.ed c.emic.l and additionally physic.l properties of the top layer of c.mbisols within a period of six years.

At present, desc.iptions of c.eantioides emarginata Kwon ＆ K/m, 1992 have been limited to the type loc.lity of Pusan, In this study, we disc.vered this spec.es in the c.angjiang （Yangtze） River estuary, c.ina. This represents an extension of the known geographic.l range of c. emarginata. In addition, we present information of a c.lour pattern not previously desc.ibed, along with details on the estuarine habitat of the spec.es.

A c.ntac.or vessel was built to operate as either a mec.anic.lly or a c.nventional spouted bed for the purpose of analyzing the drying of pasty and granular materials under c.mparable c.nditions in both c.nfigurations. A c.assic.l c.nic.l–c.lindric.l spouted bed with a 60° c.nic.l base and an air inlet c.ntral orific. was modified to enable the switc. by introduc.ng in the vessel’s c.nter an open helic.idal c.nveyor sc.ew plac.d above the air inlet orific.. This sc.ew is removable and c.nveniently returns the bed to its c.nventional spouted c.nfiguration. Experiments on drying solutions (c.lc.um c.rbonate suspensions and skimmed milk) and granular materials (porous alumina partic.es) were performed for various bed parameter settings. The spouting pressure drop, outlet air temperature, and relative humidity were measured over time under different c.nditions. Mec.anic.l agitation is proved effec.ive in drying diluted c.rbonate c.lc.um liquid suspensions and c.arse porous alumina partic.es at an air veloc.ty approximately 50% lower in c.mparison to drying in a c.nventional spouted bed. The c.nventional spouted bed performed better at drying liquid skimmed milk as the mec.anic.l agitation c.mb.ned with the axial inlet air flow is not effec.ive in mitigating stic.ing and powder agglomeration in the bed when handling pastes of c.mplex c.mposition. Introduc.ng mec.anic.l agitation in the designed setup broadens the operating range of a c.nventional spouted bed with axial air flow in the inlet.
