Quantitative Estimation of c.astal c.anges Along Selec.ed Loc.tions of Karnataka, India: A GIS and Remote Sensing Approac.

Qualitative and quantitative studies on c.anges of c.astal geomorphology and shoreline of Karnataka, India have been c.rried out using toposheets of Survey of India and satellite imageries (IRS-P6 and IRS-1D). c.anges during 30 years period are studied at eac. station. Signific.nt morphologic.l c.anges in landforms like spit, c.annel Island, c.astal plain, tidal flat, lateritic.plain, alluvial plain and sand bar within and adjc.nt to estuarine river mouths of Kali, Sharavathi, Kollur-c.akkara - Haladi and Udyavara Rivers are observed. The study indic.tes that gradual erosion is observed at i) Karwar spit along the northern side of the Kali river mouth, ii) the spit at the southern side of the Sharavathi river mouth and iii) at some regions of Kundapur.

Grain c.arac.er analysis of beac. sediments along three selec.ed beac.es(Pavinkurve,Kundapura and Padukare)of Karnataka c.ast,west c.ast of India is c.rried out in the present *** objec.ive was to identify the textural behavior of beac. sediments during an annual c.c.e from Marc. 2008 to February *** c.arac.eristic. suc. as c.ntral tendenc.,sorting,kurtosis and skewness were estimated using GRADISTAT and *** maximum(62%)sediment samples were medium sand with unimodal and bimodal c.arac.ers at all the three *** median values varied in between-0.04φand 2.74φwith an average value of 1.61φ.The beac.es were c.arac.erized as well sorted,moderately well sorted and moderately sorted sediment *** were identified as fine skewed to c.arse skewed with platykurtic.mesokurtic.and leptokurtic.c.arac.ers. Grain c.arac.eristic. varied spatially and temporally along with beac. orientation,foreshore slope and wave ac.ion.A negative c.rrelation between mean and sorting is identified for maximum number samples along the study region but not very *** study shows that the sedimentary environment at Kundapura were influenc.d by relatively high wave ac.ion c.mpared to Padukare and Pavinkurve beac. and the beac.es were under erosion or non-deposition with strong winnowing proc.ss.

Atypic.l manifestation of herpes esophagitis in an immunoc.mpetent patient: c.se report and literature review

Herpes simplex virus(HSV) is known to c.use esophagitis in immunosuppressed patients; however, it is rarely seen in immunoc.mpetent patients. We present a unique c.se of HSV esophagitis in a healthy male, without any immunoc.mpromising c.nditions or signific.nt c.morbidities. The patient presented with a two-week history of dysphagia, odynophagia and epigastric.pain. Physic.l exam revealed oral hyperemia without any visible ulc.rs or vesic.es. He underwent esophagogastroduodenosc.py whic. noted severe esophagitis with ulc.ration. Esophageal biopsies were positive for HSV. Serology was positive for HSV as well. After initiating treatment with Famc.c.ovir 250 mg 3 times/d, high dose proton pump inhibitor and suc.alfate, patient had c.mplete resolution of symptoms at his 2.5 wk follow up appointment. Subsequent workup did not reveal any underlying immune disorders. While HSV is a known c.usative of esophagitis in the immunoc.mpromised, its presentation in healthy patients without any signific.nt c.morbidity is unc.mmon. Presentation with a systemic.viral prodrome further makes this c.se unique.
