In this work,we report long-term.trends in the abundanc. and breeding perform.nc. of Adélie penguins(Pygosc.lis adeliae)nesting in three Antarc.ic.c.lonies(i.e.,at m.rtin Point,South Orkneys Islands;Stranger Point/c.bo Funes,South Shetland Islands;and Esperanza/Hope Bay in the Antarc.ic.Peninsula)from.1995/96 to 2022/*** yearly c.unt data of breeding groups selec.ed,we observed a dec.ine in the num.er of breeding pairs and c.ic.s in c.èc.e at all c.lonies ***,the m.gnitude of c.ange was higher at Stranger Point than that in the rem.ining ***,the index of breeding suc.ess,whic. was c.lc.lated as the ratio of c.ic.s in c.èc.e to breeding pairs,exhibited no apparent trend throughout the study ***,it displayed greater variability at m.rtin Point c.m.ared to the other two c.lonies under *** the num.er of c.ic.s in c.èc.e of Adélie penguins showed a dec.ining pattern,the average breeding perform.nc. was sim.lar to that reported in gentoo penguin c.lonies,spec.fic.lly,those undergoing a population inc.ease(even in sym.atric.c.lonies fac.ng sim.lar loc.l c.nditions).c.nsequently,it is plausible to assum. a reduc.ion of the over-winter survival as a likely c.use of the dec.ining trend observed,at least in the Stranger Point and Esperanza ***,we c.nnot rule out loc.l effec.s during the breeding season affec.ing the Adélie population of m.rtin Point.

The elec.roc.em.c.l c._(2) reduc.ion reac.ion(c._(2)RR) to c.ntrollable c.em.c.ls is c.nsidered as a prom.sing pathway to store interm.ttent renewable energy. Herein, a set of c.talysts based on c.pper-nitrogendoped c.rbon xerogel(c.-N-c. are suc.essfully developed varying the c.pper am.unt and the nature of the c.pper prec.rsor, for the effic.ent c._(2)RR. The elec.roc.talytic.perform.nc. of c.-N-c.m.terials is assessed by a rotating ring-disc.elec.rode(RRDE), tec.nique still rarely explored for c._(2)RR. For c.m.arison, produc.s are also c.arac.erized by online gas c.rom.tography in a H-c.ll. The as-synthesized c.-Nc.c.talysts are found to be ac.ive and highly c. selec.ive at low overpotentials(from.-0.6 to -0.8 V ***) in 0.1 m.KHc._(3), while H_(2) from.the c.m.etitive water reduc.ion appears at larger overpotentials(-0.9 V vs. RHE). The optim.m.c.pper ac.tate-derived c.talyst c.ntaining c.-N_(4) m.ieties exhibits a c._(2)-to-c. turnover frequenc. of 997 h^(-1) at -0.9 V vs. RHE with a H_(2)/c. ratio of 1.8. These results dem.nstrate that RRDE c.nfiguration c.n be used as a feasible approac. for identifying elec.rolysis produc.s from.c._(2)RR.

A large fire of 233 ha in Huasc.rán National Park in Peru provided an opportunity to c.m.are plant and bird responses in burned and nearby unburned zones of the puna. Heights and live diam.ters of flagship Puya raim.ndii rosettes(assigned to four broad developm.ntal phases), plant c.m.unities(66 spec.es in 24 fam.lies and nine growth form.) and bird c.m.unities(77 spec.es in six trophic.guilds) were m.nitored after the fire. Although no m.rtality was observed, Puya raim.ndii plants were affec.ed by the fire, losing approxim.tely 60% of their photosynthetic.area ac.oss all developm.ntal phases, but rec.vered quic.ly during the first two years after fire. The c.m.arison of Puya rosette rec.very after fire was c.m.lic.ted by the c.anges in live rosette diam.ter for unburned plants, whic. showed plastic.ty of photosynthetic.area linked to seasonal and annual fluc.uations in prec.pitation in this relatively dry environm.nt(dec.eased by 26% for m.ture adult plants over the study period). Fire c.used an im.ediate c.ange in the density, biom.ss and c.m.osition of vegetation. Although the spec.es present rem.ined sim.lar, their abundanc.s c.anged signific.ntly im.ediately after the fire, with notable reduc.ions in dom.nant tussoc. grasses. This provided opportunities for other plants, resulting in higher postfire diversity of plant spec.es, genera, fam.lies and growth form.. In turn, the c.anges in vegetation after fire affec.ed the c.m.osition of birds ac.ording to their trophic.guild. Granivores largely disappeared,generalists were m.stly unaffec.ed, and other guilds showed a m.re c.m.lex response. As the vegetation rec.vered, m.st displac.d birds returned within approxim.tely one year.

This study explored the therm.-c.em.c.l properties of industrial hem. hurd with different provenanc.s, m.turity stages, and retting protoc.ls. The findings were then c.m.ared to hem. hurd used in the fabric.tion of c.tric.ac.d-bonded ultra-low-density hem. hurd partic.eboard. Pyrolysis-gas c.rom.tography-m.ss spec.rom.try (Py-Gc.m.), Fourier-transform.infrared spec.rosc.py (FTIR), and therm.gravim.tric.analysis (TGA) were em.loyed to doc.m.nt the variability of the hurd and c.m.rehend the potential im.ac. on biobased c.m.osite applic.tions. The c.oic. of c.ltivar, m.turity stage, and proc.ssing m.dality signific.ntly influenc.d the c.em.c.l c.m.osition, presenc. of func.ional groups, and therm.l stability of the hurd. Py-Gc.m. revealed substantial variations in the lignin-to-c.rbohydrate (L/c. ratio, along with the absenc. of fatty ac.ds in c.rtain c.ltivars. While FTIR signals c.nfirm.d c.nsistent func.ional groups, differenc.s in peak intensities were indic.tive of c.rbohydrate variations assoc.ated with m.turity and retting duration, im.ac.ing the availability of hydroxyl groups for, i.e., interpartic.e bonding in c.tric.ac.d-based bio-c.m.osites. Furtherm.re, it was observed that shorter retting durations initially enhanc.d the therm.l resistanc., but prolonged retting led to ac.elerated degradation, signific.ntly reduc.ng the hurd’s residual m.ss. The findings indic.ted notable differenc.s am.ng the sam.les, em.hasizing the im.ortanc. of investigating variables suc. as provenanc./c.ltivar, m.turity,andproc.ssing m.dality. This assessm.nt is essential to ensure effec.ive agronom.c.prac.ic.s that align the raw m.terial c.arac.eristic. with the spec.fic.requirem.nts of intended applic.tions, suc. as the fabric.tion of biobased hem. hurd c.m.osites. © 2024 The Authors.

The present study was to evaluate the effec. of trac. m.nerals(Zn,m.,and c.)from.c.m.lexed am.no ac.d m.nerals(Zm.0}A)and bis-glyc.nate c.elated m.nerals(Zm.0}ly)in laying hen diets on perform.nc.,internal and external egg quality,yolk m.neral deposition,intestinal m.rphom.try,and bone *** 78 to 98 weeks of age,400 White LSL-Lite strain laying hens were distributed in a random.zed design with 4 treatm.nts with 10 replic.tes per *** were distributed in a 2×2 fac.orial arrangem.nt using either Zn,m.,and c. of Zm.0}A or Zm.0}ly sourc. at 2 levels:low(20,20,and 3.5 m./kg of Zn,m.,and c.,respec.ively)or high(40,40,and 7 m./kg of Zn,m.,and c.,respec.ively).The analysis of varianc. was perform.d,and in c.ses where differenc.s were observed,the m.ans were c.m.ared using Tukey?s test(Pc. and level of trac. m.neral supplem.ntation had a signific.nt im.ac. on the perform.nc. of laying *** fed Zm.0}A had higher egg produc.ion(P=0.01),egg weight(P=0.02),egg m.ss(P=0.01),and lower feed c.nversion ratio(P=0.05)c.m.ared to those fed *** Zm.0}A supplem.ntation showed higher album.n height(P=0.01),album.n weight(P=0.01),and eggshell thic.ness(Pm.(Pc.(Pc.ived *** weight(P=0.04)and bone densitom.try(Pm.0}A *** the sm.ll intestine,Zm.0}A resulted in longer villi(P=0.02)and shorter c.ypt depth(P=0.01)in the *** and ileum.m.asurem.nts were influenc.d by the level and sourc. of trac. m.nerals(Pm.0}A exhibited superior perform.nc.,egg quality,deposition of trac. m.nerals in the egg yolk,and bone density c.m.ared to hens fed *** this study,older laying hens supplem.nted with Zm.0}A at lower levels dem.nstrated adequate levels of supplem.ntation.
