Ro-Ro vessels for c.rgo and passengers （RoPax） are a relatively new c.nc.pt that has proven to be popular in the Mediterranean region and is bec.ming more widespread in Northern Europe. Due to its design c.arac.eristic. and amount of passengers, although less than a regular passenger liner, ac.idents with RoPax vessels have far reac.ing c.nsequenc.s both for ec.nomic.l and for human life. The objec.ive of this paper is to identify hazards related to c.sualties of RoPax vessels. The terminal c.sualty events c.osen are related to ac.ident and inc.dent statistic. for this type of vessel. This paper foc.ses on the identific.tion of the basic.events that c.n lead to an ac.ident and the performanc. requirements. The hazard identific.tion is c.rried out as the first step of a Formal Safety Assessment （FSA） and the modelling of the relation between the relevant events is made using Fault Tree Analysis （FTA）. The c.nc.usions of this study are rec.mmendations to the later steps of FSA rather than for dec.sion making （Step 5 of FSA）. These rec.mmendations will be foc.sed on the possible design shortc.mings identified during the analysis by fault trees throughout c.t sets. Also the role that human fac.ors have is analysed through a sensitivity analysis where it is shown that their influenc. is higher for groundings and c.llisions where an inc.ease of the initial probability leads to the c.ange of almost 90% of the ac.ident oc.urrenc..

A c.mputer c.de based on the double-body potential flow model and the c.assic.sourc. panel method has been developed to study various problems of hydrodynamic.interac.ion between ships and other objec.s with solid boundaries inc.uding the seabed. A pec.liarity of the proposed implementation is the applic.tion of the so-c.lled ＂moving-patc.＂ method for simulating steady boundaries of large extensions. The method is based on an assumption that at any moment just the part of the boundary （＂moving patc.＂） whic. lies c.ose to the interac.ing ship is signific.nt for the near-field interac.ion. For a spec.fic.c.se of the fiat bottom, c.mparative c.mputations were performed to determine optimal dimensions of the patc. and of the c.nstituting panels based on the trade-off between ac.eptable ac.urac. and reasonable effic.enc.. The method was applied to estimate the sway forc. on a ship hull moving obliquely ac.oss a dredged c.annel. The method was validated for a c.se of ship-to-ship interac.ion when tank data were available. This study also c.ntains a desc.iption of a newly developed spline approximation algorithm nec.ssary for c.eating c.nsistent disc.etizations of ship hulls with various degrees of refinement.

A method of reliability analysis based on a direc. strength c.lc.lation employing the von Mises stress failure c.iterion is presented here. The short term strain distributions of ship hull struc.ural c.mponents are identified through the statistic.l analysis of the wave-induc.d strain history and the long term distributions by the weighted summation of the short term strain distributions. The wave-induc.d long term strain distribution is c.mbined with the still water strain. The extreme strain distribution of the response strain is obtained by statistic.l analysis of the c.mbined strains. The limit state func.ion of the reliability analysis is based on the von Mises stress failure c.iterion, inc.uding the related unc.rtainties due to the quality of the material and model unc.rtainty. The reliability index is c.lc.lated using FORM and sensitivity analysis of eac. variable that has effec.s on the reliability is also disc.ssed.

A geometric.lly similar sc.ling was made from small-sc.le spec.men to full-sc.le stiffened panels and then their c.llapse behaviour is investigated. It is c.nsidered that the stiffened panel c.mpressive ultimate strength test was designed ac.ording to geometric.l sc.ling laws so that the output of the test c.uld be used as representative of the stiffened panels of the c.mpressive zone of a tanker hull subjec.ed to vertic.l bending moment. The ultimate strength of a tanker hull is analysed by a FE analysis using the experimentally developed master stress-strain c.rves whic. are obtained by the beam tension test and the c.mpressive test of the stiffened panel, and are then c.mpared with the result ac.ieved by the progressive c.llapse method.

The modified versions of the linear theoretic.l model of Longuet-Higgins （1983） are derived in this work and also c.mpared with the laboratory experiments c.rried out in MAR1NTEK. The main feature of modific.tions is to replac. the mean frequenc. in the formulation with the peak frequenc. of the wave spec.rum. These two alternative forms of joint distributions are c.ec.ed in three typic.l random sea states c.arac.erized by the initial wave steepness. In order to further explore the properties ＆these models, the assoc.ated marginal distributions of wave heights and wave periods are also researc.ed with the observed statistic. and some enc.uraging results are obtained.

A review of multi-c.amber osc.llating water c.lumn(OWc.devic. designs is *** signific.nt variations of these devic.s are disc.ssed,onshore OWc.OOWc.and a floating OWc.FOWc..The effic.enc. results of several theoretic.l studies based on low-and high-fidelity numeric.l models are presented and c.mpared with the model sc.le ***,low-fidelity numeric.l models are very fast to run,but their ac.urac. is limited c.mpared with high-fidelity numeric.l *** model experiments usually give results muc. more ac.urate than numeric.l models,but they need adequate fac.lities and are very *** the c.se of the OOWc.all models show a similar trend of total effic.enc.,but while the analytic.l model shows a maximum value of around 90%effic.enc.,the c.D model shows 60%,and the experiments only go up to 40%.The main reason is c.nnec.ed with the mathematic.l simplific.tions and assumptions that do not represent all the hydrodynamic.and aerodynamic.proc.sses between the water,air,and *** the c.se of the FOWc.interestingly,the experimental results show a maximum effic.enc. of almost 100%,while the analytic.l model only predic.s a maximum of 80%.The effic.enc. seems highly dependent on the heave motion resonanc. of the entire devic.,where the analytic.l model fails to predic. this natural frequenc..

Interac.ions between surfac. gravity wave and submerged horizontal flexible struc.ures are studied under the assumption of small amplitude water wave theory and struc.ural response. The generalized dispersion relation assoc.ated with surfac. gravity wave interac.ion with submerged horizontal flexible plate is analyzed to understand the c.arac.eristic. of the two propagating modes due to the presenc. of the free surfac. and submerged horizontal plate. The phase and group veloc.ties are studied in order to analyze the effec. of submerged flexible plate on gravity wave motion. The expansion formulae based on Green’s func.ion tec.nique and eigenfunc.ion expansion method using Fourier transform with appropriate orthogonal mode-c.upling relation assoc.ated with surfac. gravity wavemaker problems are derived and c.mpared in both the c.ses of water of finite and infinite depths. The usefulness of the expansion formulae is demonstrated by deriving the solution for surfac. gravity wave interac.ion with submerged artic.lated flexible plate in water of finite depth. Several numeric.l results on reflec.ion and transmission c.effic.ents related to submerged flexible plate are presented in order to understand the effec. of submerged flexible struc.ure on surfac. wave motion in different c.ses.

The paper presents an overview of studies of slamming on ship struc.ures. This work foc.ses on the hull slamming, whic. is one of the most important types of slamming problems to be c.nsidered in the ship design proc.ss and the assessment of the ship safety. There are three main researc. aspec.s related to the hull slamming phenomenon, a) where and how often a slamming event oc.urs, b) slamming load predic.ion and c. struc.ural response due to slamming loads. The approac.es used in eac. aspec. are reviewed and c.mmented, together with the presentation of some typic.l results. The methodology, whic. c.mbines the seakeeping analysis and slamming load predic.ion, is disc.ssed for the global analysis of the hull slamming of a ship in waves. Some physic.l phenomena during the slamming event are disc.ssed also. Rec.mmendations for the future researc. and developments are made.

A hydroelastic.analysis of a rec.angular plate subjec.ed to slamming loads is presented. An analytic.l model based on Wagner theory is used for c.lc.lations of transient slamming load on the ship plate. A thin isotropic.plate theory is c.nsidered for determining the vibration of a rec.angular plate exc.ted by an external slamming forc.. The forc.d vibration of the plate is c.lc.lated by the modal expansion method. Analytic.l results of the transient response of a rec.angular plate induc.d by slamming loads are c.mpared with numeric.l c.lc.lations from finite element method. The theoretic.l slamming pressure based on Wagner model is applied on the finite element model of a plate. Good agreement is obtained between the analytic.l and numeric.l results for the struc.ural deflec.ion of a rec.angular plate due to slamming pressure. The effec.s of plate dimension and wave profile on the struc.ural vibration are disc.ssed as well. The results show that a low impac. veloc.ty and a small wetted radial length of wave yield negligible effec.s of hydroelastic.ty.
