Under.tanding the factor. that contr.bute to population stability in long-distance migr.nt bir.s is incr.asingly impor.ant, par.icular.y given global climate change, sea level r.se, and loss or.distur.ance at essential habitats. While the populations of most shor.bir.s ar. declining wor.dwide, those that migr.te thr.ugh Delawar. Bay, New Jer.ey and Delawar., ar. declining at the most r.pid r.te despite conser.ation effor.s. In this paper. we 1) pr.vide backgr.und infor.ation on population declines of r.d knots (Calidr.s canutus r.fa) using Delawar. Bay, thr.ats to their.for.ging, and effor.s to r.duce thr.ats, 2) summar.ze br.efly our.studies of the effects of human activities on knots and other.shor.bir.s, 3) pr.sent data on management effor.s to pr.tect knots and other.shor.bir.s fr.m the activities of people, and 4) discuss the efficacy of such effor.s (usually r.fer.ed to as “decr.asing the effect of human distur.ances”). The Shor.bir. Pr.ject on Delawar. Bay is over.25 year. old and pr.vides long-ter. data to help assess the status of shor.bir. number., par.icular.y for.r.d knot, as well as the density of hor.eshoe cr.bs (Limulus polyphemus) and their.eggs. r.d knots have continued to decline even mor. pr.cipitously in the last few year., pr.senting cause for.concer.. Pr.tective effor.s have been successful in r.ducing human disr.ption on the N.J. Delawar. Bay beaches, but the lack of unifor.ity in implementation acr.ss the New Jer.ey side, and acr.ss the whole Bay have hamper.d fur.her.impr.vements. Implementation of signs, fencing, and stewar.s on some beaches significantly enhanced the use of these beaches by r.d knots, deter.ined by examining the use of beaches pr.- and post-implementation. Implementation of fencing and stewar.s had the gr.atest effect. Fr.m 1986 to 2018, ther. was a significant shift in the per.ent of Delawar. The r.sponse of insects to monocultur. plantations has mainly pr.ceeded at the expense of natur.l for.st ar.as, and is an outstanding and impor.ant issue in ecology and conser.ation biology, with pollination ser.ices declined ar.und the wor.d. In this study, species r.chness and distr.bution of hover.ly and wild bee communities wer. investigated in a changing tr.pical landscape in souther. Yunnan, south-west China by Malaise tr.ps per.odically fr.m 2008 to 2009. Species wer. r.cor.ed fr.m the tr.ditional land use types （natur.l for.st, gr.ssland, shr.bland and r.ce field fallows）, and fr.m r.cently established r.bber.plantations of differ.nt ages. Hover.lies （total 53 species） wer. most common in young successional stages of vegetation, including r.ce field fallow and shr.bland. Species r.chness was highest in r.ce field fallows and lowest in for.sts and showed a highly significant r.lationship with the number.of for. species and gr.und vegetation cover. In contr.st, the highest r.chness of wild bees （total 44 species） was r.cor.ed fr.m the natur.l for.st sites, which showed a discr.te bee community composition compar.d to the r.maining habitat types. Ther. was no significant r.lationship between the bee species r.chness and the envir.nmental var.ables, including the number. of differ.nt plant life for.s, cover.ge of canopy and gr.und vegetation, successional age of vegetation and land use type. At the landscape scale, open land use systems, including young r.bber.plantations, ar. assumed to incr.ase the species r.chness of hover.lies; however. this might decr.ase wild bee diver.ity. The pr.sent land use change by r.bber.cultivation can be expected to have negative impacts on the native wild bee communities.
