Half-Heusler materials are strong candidates for thermoelectric applications due to their high weighted mobilities and power factors,which is known to be correlated to valley degeneracy in the electronic band ***,there are over 50 known semiconducting half-Heusler phases,and it is not clear how the chemical composition affects the electronic *** all the n-type electronic structures have their conduction band minimum at either theΓ-or X-point,there is more diversity in the p-type electronic structures,and the valence band maximum can be at either theΓ-,L-,or ***,we use high throughput computation and machine learning to compare the valence bands of known half-Heusler compounds and discover new chemical guidelines for promoting the highly degenerate W-point to the valence band *** do this by constructing an“orbital phase diagram”to cluster the variety of electronic structures expressed by these phases into groups,based on the atomic orbitals that contribute most to their valence ***,with the aid of machine learning,we develop new chemical rules that predict the location of the valence band maximum in each of the *** rules can be used to engineer band structures with band convergence and high valley degeneracy.

A critical examination of compound stability predictions from machine-learned formation energies

Machine learning has emerged as a novel tool for the efficient prediction of material properties,and claims have been made that machine-learned models for the formation energy of compounds can approach the accuracy of Density Functional Theory(DFT).The models tested in this work include five recently published compositional models,a baseline model using stoichiometry alone,and a structural *** testing seven machine learning models for formation energy on stability predictions using the Materials Project database of DFT calculations for 85,014 unique chemical compositions,we show that while formation energies can indeed be predicted well,all compositional models perform poorly on predicting the stability of compounds,making them considerably less useful than DFT for the discovery and design of new *** critically,in sparse chemical spaces where few stoichiometries have stable compounds,only the structural model is capable of efficiently detecting which materials are *** nonincremental improvement of structural models compared with compositional models is noteworthy and encourages the use of structural models for materials discovery,with the constraint that for any new composition,the ground-state structure is not known a *** work demonstrates that accurate predictions of formation energy do not imply accurate predictions of stability,emphasizing the importance of assessing model performance on stability predictions,for which we provide a set of publicly available tests.

The contemporary problem of prostate cancer overtreatment can be partially attributed to the diagnosis of potentially indolent prostate cancers that pose low risk to aged men, and lack of sufficiently accurate risk stratification methods to reliably seek out men with indolent diseases. Since progressive acquisition and accumulation of genomic alterations, both genetic and epigenetic, is a defining feature of all human cancers at different stages of disease progression, it is hypothesized that RNA and DNA alterations characteristic of indolent prostate tumors may be different from those previously characterized in the setting of clinically significant prostate cancer. Approaches capable of detecting such alterations on a genome-wide level are the most promising. Such analysis may uncover molecular events defining early initiating stages along the natural history of prostate cancer progression, and ultimately lead to rational development of risk stratification methods for identification of men who can safely forego treatment. However, defining and characterizing indolent prostate cancer in a clinically relevant context remains a challenge, particularly when genome-wide approaches are employed to profile formalin-fixed paraffin-embedded （FFPE） tissue specimens. Here, we provide the conceptual basis underlying the importance of understanding indolent prostate cancer from molecular profiling studies, identify the key hurdles in sample acquisition and variables that affect molecular data derived from FFPE tissues, and highlight recent progresses in efforts to address these technical challenges.

Background： Failure to expel fetal membranes within 24 h of calving is a pathological condition defined as retained placenta（RP）. The objective of this investigation was to evaluate whether there are alterations in several selected serum variables related to innate immunity and carbohydrate and lipid metabolism that precede occurrence of RP in transition Holstein dairy ***： One hundred multiparous Holstein dairy cows were involved in the study. Blood samples were collected from the coccygeal vein during the-8 to ＋4 wks around parturition, once per week before the morning *** healthy control cows（cON） and 6 cows with RP were selected and serum samples at-8,-4, time of diagnosis of disease, and ＋4 wks relative to parturition were used for analyses. All samples were analyzed for lactate, nonesterified fatty acids（NEFA）, β-hydroxybutyrate（BHBA）, interleukin-1（IL-1）, interleukin-6（IL-6）, tumor necrosis factor（TNF）, haptoglobin（Hp）, and serum amyloid A（SAA）.Results： cows with RP had greater concentrations of serum lactate, IL-1, IL-6, TNF, and SAA in comparison with cON cows. Intriguingly, elevated concentrations of all five variables were observed at-8 and-4 wks before the occurrence of RP compared to healthy cows. cows with RP also had lower DMI and milk production vs cON animals; however milk composition was not affected by ***： cows with RP showed an activated innate immunity 8 wks prior to diagnosis of disease. Overall results suggest that serum IL-1, IL- 6, and TNF, and lactate can be used as screening biomarkers to indicate cows that might have health issues during the transition period.
