Estimation of Genetic Parameters of Turiacu Pineapple Clones and Genetic Correlation between Traits

This study aimed to estimate genetic parameters of Turiaçu pineapple clones using mixed models;and estimate genetic correlation coefficient between traits, to provide important information to breeding programs. For this, 19 pineapple plants were visually selected and its slips were collected and planted in a single environment and nine traits were evaluated. The genetic parameters of most evaluated traits presented significant differences between the 19 clones. Some traits, such as Fusarium wilt resistance, showed high magnitudes of heritability. Clones did not differ in relation to total titratable acidity (TTA) and total soluble solids (TSS). However, these traits, which have implications to fruit quality, showed to be negatively correlated to fruit mass (-0.46 and -0.67). The results indicate that the population of Turiaçu pineapple is suitable for selection, especially for Fusarium wilt resistance. Also, Turiaçu clones can be used in breeding programs of pineapple.

In order to assess the prevalence of physical activity (PA) and its relationship with lipid profile among adolescents, a cross-sectional study with a quantitative approach was conducted with 102 adolescents aged 15 to 19 years from public schools of Campina Grande, Paraiba, Brazil. The following variables were analyzed: age, gender, ethnicity, maternal education, socioeconomic status, nutritional status, the practice of PA and lipid profile. The variables were obtained through validated form, anthropometry (weight and height) and blood collection by contract laboratory. Double entry and SPSS (Statistical Package for Social Sciences) 22.0 were performed. First, a descriptive analysis of all variables was conducted, as well as measures of central tendency and dispersion for continuous variables. Accordingly, distribution was tested for normality using the Kolmogorov-Smirnov test. According to results, correlation was evaluated by Pearson/Spearman tests. Significance level of 5% was adopted for all analyses. The study was approved by the Ethics Approach Committee (EAC) of the State University of Paraíba. The most prevalent sex in the sample was female and regarding maternal education, 35.4% had complete high school. Regarding serum lipoproteins, 16% showed elevated total cholesterol and HDL (High Density Lipoprotein) 66% below the desired value. With regard to physical activity, 60.8% had insufficient PA levels. The sample showed changes in lipid profile and insufficiently active life style, besides having overpowered the eutrophic nutritional status. No statistically significant correlations between variables of the lipid profile and the time of PA were observed. These findings highlight the importance of physical exercise for maintaining health and suggest studies with larger populations in order to check the scientific literature regarding this topic.

The study investigates the effect of spatial and temporal tree-fall gaps structure on spiders’ assemblage in an Atlantic forest fragmented area in Brazil. It was conducted in the Michelin Ecological Preserve-REM (Bahia), 190 ha forest remnant. Samples were collected on leaf-litter (50 × 50 cm) at five tree-fall gaps formations (2), within five adjacent primary forest and five inner edge parcels. During 16 months (between May 2009 and October 2012), 480 m2 leaf-litter samples were collected, from which spiders were extracted using mini-Winkler traps. Objective: To evaluate the profile of the Brazilianvaginal ring user, reasons for choosing it, satisfaction, menstrual pattern, tolerability, efficacy, side effects and reasons for discontinuation. Methods: We reviewed the files of 148 users who attended the Hospital de Jacarepaguáand private clinics, between 2005 and 2011, in a total of 3107 cycles. Kaplan-Meier survival curves and regression models were used in statistical analysis. Results: The profile was: single, nulligravida, 30 years (mean) and with university education. The previous contraception used was mostly the oral hormonal contraception (75.7%). Women chose the ring for: practicality (32.4%), forgetting the pill (32.4%) and irregular vaginal bleeding (13.5%). The satisfaction degree was 80.5% (119). There were good cycle control and no pregnancies. Thirty-eight patients discontinued the use (25.7%). The main reasons were wish for pregnancy (6%), spotting (3.4%) and increased vaginal discharge (2.7%). At the end of the first year, use of the greatest reduction of continuity probability was observed (19.3%). Women with side effects were 68% less likely to be satisfied with the method than those without (p-value Conclusion: Nuvaring®is an excellent contraceptiveoption due to its sefficacy, cycle control, tolerability, practicality and safety.

Background: Atherosclerosis and thrombosis are the major manifestations underlying cardiovascular diseases (CVD), which are the leading cause of mortality and morbidity worldwide. Both result from an interaction between genetic and environmental risk factors. The goal of our study was to evaluate several polymorphisms identified as predisposing factors to atherosclerosis and thrombosis. Material and Methods: A series of 155 healthy unrelated individuals of Azorean origin were analyzed using the CVD StripAssay (ViennaLab Diagnostics, Austria) for the most established polymorphisms involved in blood coagulation (F2, F5, F13A1, FGB), fibrinolitic system (SERPINE1), platelet adhesion (ITGB3), homocysteine metabolism (MTHFR), reninangio-tensin system (ACE) and lipid metabolism (APOE). Results: No significant differences were observed in allelic frequencies when comparing our data to mainland Portugal. Group stratification according to the number of “increased” risk alleles, demonstrated that 116/155 (75%) individuals belong to the moderate risk group (5 - 10 risk alleles). Conclusions: Although acknowledging the fact that the allelic states at the analysed loci lack predictive value, the fact that a high frequency of individuals presents at least 5 risk alleles (124/155;80%) is important for the establishment of the appropriate preventive measures in the Azorean population.

In the last decade, Brazil was the scene of two of the world’s biggest disasters related to mining tailings dams. The collapse of the Mariana and Brumadinho dams was catastrophic event that brought to light major environmental and humanitarian crises. Facts like this incite debate on the safety of dam construction methods and highlight the need for a broad discussion of dam safety legislation in the country. From the above, this paper promotes a review of various forms of construction of tailings dams and their associated problems, as well as discusses the techniques for soil reinforcement and their construction methods. The work also brings an overview of the Brazilian dams from April to July 2019, tracing the context of the Brazilian tailings dams months after the tragedy of Brumadinho. The methodology includes a robust literature review and discourse analysis. In Brazil, the number of ruptured dams is alarming, especially in the state of Minas Gerais, in which more than 7 have broken in the last two decades. Among the damages, the deaths impact society abruptly and were cataloged 455 deaths, of which 216 correspond to the rupture of the dam of the Córrego do Feijão mine in Brumadinho. To evaluate and diagnose a dam, one should consider ordinance N ° 70,389, 2017 revoked by Resolution ANM n ° 95, of February 7, 2022. In this context, in March 2019, we experienced several disturbing situations regarding dam instability in the state of Minas Gerais, being categorized as risky structures. To exemplify, one can cite dams classified as level 2 risk that became level 3. Due to the above facts, several studies are being conducted to improve soil aspects. For example, we highlight the increase in soil resistance that can be done using commercial and alternative materials available in the environment.

Qi Gong and Heart Rate Variability: A Systematic Review

Qì Gōng is a type of exercise that involves meditation and is used for health. With a background from the martial arts, it is known also as an auto healing exercise with three main elements according to Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM): body focus (posture and movement), breathing and mind focus (meditative elements). Heart rate variability is a tool that allows us to measure the autonomic system velocity to detect and respond to unexpected stimuli. So our goal was to build a systematic review of Qi Gong and Heart rate variability. PUBMED, EBSCO and Science Direct data bases were searched. Key terms (MeSH) were Heart Rate Variability and Ch’i Kung OR Qi Gong with a 10-year filter. Four independent reviewers analyzed all articles and excluded duplicated articles, articles in Chinese and articles with no adherence to the subject. The end result was 5 studies selected. Our results showed no significant improvements in HRV with the practice of Qì Gōng, probably because of data heterogeneity. We found 5 types of Qì Gōng, 3 different instruments and different time intervals to measure HRV and 2 different age groups in the studies. We can conclude that there is evidence that Qì Gōng can improve HRV but studies that would use the same parameters are needed to further confirm that.

Objective: The purpose of this study was to investigate the presence of postural imbalances, which can interfere with the mandible position and affect the actions of the stomatognathic system. Materials and Methods: Forty men, aged between 23 to 29 years, were selected and divided into two groups: Group I comprised 20 healthy individuals with no clinical postural change diagnosis;Group II, 20 individuals who had ACL surgical, unilateral with patellar tendon graft, paired individual to individual (age and weight). All of them were submitted to an electromyography in different clinical conditions. In addition, a condylar biomechanical assessment was performed through videogrametry. Results: In electromyography and videogrametry, a normal standard biomechanical was observed for both groups, however, Group GII—Ligamentplasty presented an inhibition of the masticatory muscles and decreased joint kinesthetic. Conclusion: Based on the results obtained, it was concluded that after the reconstruction of the ACL, individuals presented changes in the stomatog-nathic system.
