Sickle cell anemia (SCA) is a genetically inherited hemolytic disorder characterized by chronic inflammation. Cytokine expression affects the pivotal pathways that contribute to disease pathogenesis, but the mechanisms involved are not well understood. SCA is associated with a proinflammatory state, and an enhanced inflammatory response occurs during vasoocclusive crisis. The immune system thus plays an important role in this inflammatory condition, with several cell types secreting pro-inflammatory cytokines that contribute to the occurrence of common cyclical events in SCA patients, such as hemolysis, vascular occlusion and inflammation. Studies of these cytokines and chemokines in SCA patients have clarified the mechanisms that underlie this disease and highlighted the need for a better understanding of cytokine participation in SCA pathophysiology.

Sickle cell disease (SCD) is a genetic disorder characterized by a chronic inflammatory process, and new biomarkers have been studied as promising molecules for understanding the inflammation in its pathophysiology. The hemolysis and the release of molecules associated to the hemoglobin (Hb) catabolism, such as free Hb, iron, and heme, generating a oxidant environment with production of reactive oxygen and nitrogen species. The immune system plays a very important role in the inflammation, with cells secreting pro-inflammatory cytokines and chemokines. There is also a nitric oxide (NO) resistance state, with an impaired NO bioactivity, leading to a vascular dys-function;activation of platelet, leukocytes, erythrocytes, and endothelial cells, with expression of adhesion molecules and its ligands, and several receptors, that altogether participate at inflammatory process. During inflammation, there is an increase of dendritic cells (DCs) expresse toll like receptors (TLR), but the role of DCs and TLR in SCD pathogenesis is unclear. Also, there are molecules contributing for enhance the endothelium dysfunction, such as homocysteine that has been associated with vascular complications in the pathology of other diseases and it may contribute to the vascular complications presented by SCD patients. Circulating microparticules (MPs) levels are augmented in several diseases and have been described in SCD, where cells membrane compounds are associated to cell’s thrombotic and coagulation state, such as tissue factor and phosphatidylserine (PS), which may contribute to endothelial dysfunction. The knowledge of all these biomarkers may contribute to new therapeutic approach discover, improveing SCD patient life quality.

This study addresses challenges in fetal magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) related to motion artifacts, maternal respiration, and hardware limitations. To enhance MRI quality, we employ deep learning techniques, specifically utilizing Cycle GAN. Synthetic pairs of images, simulating artifacts in fetal MRI, are generated to train the model. Our primary contribution is the use of Cycle GAN for fetal MRI restoration, augmented by artificially corrupted data. We compare three approaches (supervised Cycle GAN, Pix2Pix, and Mobile Unet) for artifact removal. Experimental results demonstrate that the proposed supervised Cycle GAN effectively removes artifacts while preserving image details, as validated through Structural Similarity Index Measure (SSIM) and normalized Mean Absolute Error (MAE). The method proves comparable to alternatives but avoids the generation of spurious regions, which is crucial for medical accuracy.

Survival to adult life in patients born with“functionally”single ventricle,without any surgical treatment,as natural history,is extremely rarely reported[1,2,3,4,5,6,7].In general,these group of patients with“functionally”single ventricle are symptomatic from the first weeks of life,and require two to three staged operations to obtain that the single ventricle pumps the oxygenated blood to the systemic circulation,while the less oxygenated blood is deviated by gravity from the superior and inferior vena cava directly to the lungs[1,8,9].The result of this artificial“Fontan circulation”is high systemic venous pressure,and the chronic elevation of the systemic venous pressure may results in liver failure,renal failure.

Despite ample literature,the influence of the individual soil properties and covers on the hydrological response of burned soils of forests has not clearly identified.A clear understanding of the surface runoff and erosion rates altered by wildfires and prescribed fires is beneficial to identify the most suitable post-fire treatment This study has carried out a combined analysis of the hydrological response of soil and its driving factors in burned forests of Central-Eastern *** pine stands of these forests were subjected to both prescribed fire and wildfire,and,in the latter case,to post-fire treatment with ***,simple multi-regression models are proposed to predict runoff and erosion in the experi-mental *** the case of the prescribed burning,the fire had a limited impact on runoff and erosion compared to the unburned areas,due to the limited changes in soil *** contrast,the wildfire increased many-fold the runoff and erosion rates,but the mulching reduced the hydrological response of the burned soils,particularly for the first two-three rainfalls after the *** increase in runoff and erosion after the wildfire was associated to the removal of the vegetation cover,soil water repellency,and ash left by fire;the changes in water infiltration played a minor role on runoff and *** multi-regression models developed for the prescribed fire were accurate to predict the post-fire runoff ***,these models were less reliable for predictions of the mean erosion *** predictions of erosion after wildfire and mulching were excellent,while those of runoff were not satisfactory(except for the mean values).These results are useful to better understand the relations among the hydrological effects of fire on one side and the main soil properties and covers on the other ***,the proposed prediction models are useful to support the planning activities of forest managers and hydrologists towards a more ef

Prescribed fire,although having low intensity and being able to reduce the risk of wildfire may modify soil properties in the short term,with possible increases in runoffand erosion *** mulching with vegetation residues is one of the most common post-fire management *** of fern,which is abundant on the Mediterranean forest floor,may be used to replace straw for mulching fireaffected ***,the effects of prescribed fires are not completely understood,and there is no data regarding the use of fern to protect soil after fire in the *** fill this gap,selected soil chemical parameters were analyzed,on a comparative basis,in three Mediterranean forests(pine,oak and chestnut)in Calabria(Southern Italy).These parameters were measured immediately and one year after fire in unburned,burned and not treated,and burned and mulched *** in soil chemical properties among the different treatments were significant,and the effects of the prescribed fire and mulching were dependent on the time elapsed from their application and forest *** general,mulching was not effective in limiting the changes in the monitored soil properties compared to the pre-fire *** forest species showed different temporal trends in changes of soil properties.

Old-growth forests play a key-role in reducing atmospheric carbon dioxide(CO_(2)) concentrations by storing large CO_(2)amounts in biomass and soil over *** quantifies the carbon pool into different forest compartments in three Mediterranean old-growth forests of Southern Italy populated by Pinus laricio,Fagus sylvatica and Abies *** carbon pools have been assessed per compartment,i.e.,living trees,dead wood,litterfall(foliar and woody),roots and 0-20 cm topsoil,combining the whole old-growth forest mass,(i.e.,using tree allometric relationships,deadwood factor conversions,root-to-shoot ratios,litterfall and soil samplings) by the respective organic carbon *** results show the considerable capacity of these forest ecosystems in storing CO_(2)in biomass and soil,with carbon pool values ranging from 532.2to 596.5 Mg C *** trees and 0-20 cm topsoil had larger carbon pool,contributing 53.0 and 22.1%,*** most cases,organic carbon concentration was higher(more than 60%) than the average carbon conversion rate of 50%,especially in living trees,deadwood,and woody *** study contributes further scientific evidence of the capacity of old-growth forests in storing CO_(2)in their different compartments,with special evidence on tree biomass,litterfall and mineral soil,thereby highlighting the key role of old-growth forests within the challenge of climate change mitigation.

The generation of the continental crust is widely accepted to have taken place predominantly in the Archean,when TTG magmatism associated with greenstone-belt supracrustal succession development was typically followed by emplacement of high-K granites before crustal *** study focuses on the Campos Gerais complex(CGC),which is an Archean granite-greenstone belt lithological association in a tectonic window located in the southwesternmost portion of the São Francisco craton(SFC).The CGC is an important segment of Paleo-to Mesoarchean continental crust to be integrated into paleogeographic reconstructions prior to the transition into the *** investigation reports field relationships,28 major and trace element compositions,U–Pb(zircon)geochronological results,and Hf and Sm–Nd isotope data for orthogneiss and amphibolite *** results indicate that the CGC records a complex Archean crustal evolution,where voluminous 2.97 Ga TTG tonalites and trondhjemites(ε_(Nd)(t)=-4.7;T_(DM)=3.24 Ga)were followed by 2.89 Ga sanukitoid tonalite production(ε_(Nd)(t)=-1.9;T_(DM)=3.02 Ga),broadly coeval with the development of the Fortaleza de Minas and Pitangui *** events are interpreted to represent the initial stage of an important subduction-accretion tectonic cycle,which ended with the emplacement of 2.82–2.81 Ga high-K leucogranites and migmatization of the TTG-sanukitoid crust,with hybrid and two-mica,peraluminous compositions(ε_(Nd)(t)=-8.0 to-8.6;T_(DM)=3.57–3.34 Ga).The presence of inherited zircons with207Pb/206Pb ages of 3.08 Ga,3.29 Ga,3.55 Ga and 3.62 Ga indicates that the Mesoarchean tectonic processes involved reworking of Meso-to Eo-archean *** TTG magmatism took place at ca.2.77 Ga represented by juvenile tonalite stocks(ε_(Nd)(t)=+1.0 to-1.5;T_(DM)=2.80–2.88 Ga)which intrude the TTG-greenstone belt *** stabilization was attained by 2.67 Ga,allowing for the emplacement of within-plate thol
