Understanding the relationship between High Reliability Theory (HRT) ofmindful organizing and Safety Management Systems (SMS) within theaerospace industry: A cross-sectional quantitative assessment

There seems to be a paucity in extant literature that assesses the relationship between Safety Management Systems (SMS) and High Reliability Theory (HRT) behavior process of mindful organizing (MO) among aerospaceorganizations. There could be benefits for organizational safety by exploring this relationship in high-reliabilityorganizations (HROs) like the aerospace industry. Using a modified Safety Organizing Scale (SOS) by Vogus andSutcliffe (2007) and a validated SMS scale, the relationship between SMS and MO was measured. The perceptionsof a cross-section of respondents from commercial airlines with SMS and commercial space licensees without SMSin the United States (U.S.) was assessed. A four-factor model of MO had acceptable fit. A model showing the relationship between SMS and MO had good fit and showed a high significant strength of relationship (r = 0.82,p = 0.000) with a big effect size. There were also significant differences in mean responses among managementpersonnel and non-management personnel on the MO factor “sensitivity to operations” and the result suggestsmanagers were better at identifying personnel with skills and knowledge to ensure safer task accomplishmentthan non-management personnel. The study results suggest that the SMS requirements for commercial airlines inthe U.S. can enrich the identification and understanding of MO factors and it may be beneficial for the commercial space industry to formally adopt SMS. Future research studies may include direct comparisons in multipleaerospace organizations using a larger sample size to determine the overall understanding of MO factors and howit affects SMS.

Speciation by selection： A framework for understanding ecology＇s role in speciation

Speciation research during the last several decades has confirmed that natural selection frequently drives the genera- tion of new species. But how does this process generally unfold in nature？ We argue that answering this question requires a clearer conceptual framework for understanding selection＇s role in speciation. We present a unified framework of speciation, pro- viding mechanistic descriptions of fundamentally distinct routes to speciation, and how these may interact during lineage splitting Two major categories are recognized： reproductive isolation resulting from （1） responses to selection, ＂speciation by selection,＂ or （2） non-selective processes, ＂speciation without selection.＂ Speciation by selection can occur via three mechanisms：（1） similar selection, （2） divergent selection, and （3） reinforcement selection. Understanding ecology＇s role in speciation requires uncovering how these three mechanisms contribute to reproductive isolation, and their relative importance compared to non-selective proce- sses, because all three mechanisms can occur side-by-side during speciation. To accomplish this, we highlight examination of groups of organisms inhabiting replicated environmental gradients. This scenario is common in nature, and a large literature illus- trates that both parallel and non-parallel responses to similar environments are widespread, and each can result in speciation. This recognition reveals four general pathways of speciation by similar or divergent selection--parallel and nonparallel responses to similar and divergent selection. Altogether, we present a more precise framework for speciation research, draw attention to some under-recognized features of speciation, emphasize the multidimensionality of speciation, reveal limitations of some previous tests and descriptions of speciation mechanisms, and point to a number of directions for future investigation [Current Zoology 59 （1）： 31-52, 2013].

This paper presents a theoretical and experimental study on controller design for the AMBs in a small-scale flywheel energy storage system,where the main goals are to achieve low energy consumption and improved rotordynamic stability.A H-infinity optimal control synthesis procedure is defined for the permanent-magnet-biased AMB-rotor system with 4 degrees of *** the choice of design weighting functions,notch filter characteristics are incorporated within the controller to reduce AMB current components caused by rotor vibration at the synchronous frequency and higher *** tests are used to validate the controller design methodology and provide comparative results on performance and *** results show that the H-infinity controller is able to achieve stable rotor levitation and reduce AMB power consumption by more than 40%(from 4.80 to 2.64 Watts)compared with the conventional PD control ***,the H-infinity controller can prevent vibrational instability of the rotor nutation mode,which is prone to occur when operating with high rotational speeds.

Characterization of the proteases in the midgut of the xylophagous larvae of Oemona hirta （coleoptera： Cerambycidae）

The protein digestive capability of the larvae of the longhorn beetle （Oemona hirta, coleoptera： Cerambycidae, Fabricius, 1775） was investigated. This species feeds only on wood where there is a high proportion of vascular tissue. The pH of the midgut, the major digestive organ, was alkaline and protein hydrolysis was maximal at alkaline pH. Use of specific synthetic peptide substrates showed that the major protease activities were the endopeptidases, trypsin and chymotrypsin-like activity, and the exopeptidase, leucine aminopeptidase and the pH curves corresponded to that with protein substrate. Studies using a range ofserine protease inhibitors as well as specific inhibitors ofmetalloproteases, cysteine proteases and aspartate proteases confirmed a serine protease-based digestive system similar to earlier reports of sapwood-feeding Cerambycids. Control of these insect pests using protease inhibitors is discussed.

Although there is ample evidence that central nervous system progenitor pools respond to traumatic brain injury,the reported effects are variable and likely contribute to both recovery as well as *** a better understanding of the diverse progenitor populations in the adult brain and their niche-specific reactions to traumatic insult,treatments can be tailo red to enhance the benefits and dampen the deleterious effects of this *** review provides an overview of endogenous precursors,the associated effects on cognitive recovery,and the potential of exogenous cell therapeutics to modulate these endogenous repair *** the hippocampal dentate gyrus and subventricular zone of the lateral ventricles,more recently identified sites of adult neurogenesis,the meninges,as well as circumventricular organs,are also discussed as targets for endogenous ***,this review highlights that progenitor prolife ration alone is no longer a meaningful outcome and studies must strive to better chara cterize precursor spatial localization,transcriptional profile,morphology,and functional synaptic *** improved insight and a more targeted approach,the stimulation of endogenous neurogenesis remains a promising strategy for recovery following traumatic brain injury.

Foraminifera in Cenozoic Paleoenvironments

Paleontologists search the fossil record for evidence of age, ancient environments, phylogenetic reconstructions and ancient communities. Cenozoic foraminifera preserve evidence for all of these simultaneously from the water column and from at, above and below the sediment/water interface. As our understanding of foraminiferal assemblages and their place in the strata （biofacies） becomes more sophisticated, so are foraminiferal biofacies challenged to contribute to more subtle problems in Cenozoic earth and life history. Progress is described as a series of five ＂integrations＂. （Ⅰ） The quantification of foraminiferal biofacies was an advance on simple presences and absences of species meeting such questions as marine or nonmarine, or shallow or deep. （Ⅱ） Foraminiferal shells carry geochemical signals especially isotopes of oxygen （temperature, ice volume）, carbon （nutrition and the carbon cycle）, and strontium （seawater ratios through time）. （Ⅲ） From modern foraminiferal biology we have lifestyle insights leading to a model of oceans and paleo-oceans called the trophic resource continuum, a valuable way into greenhouse-icehouse comparisons and contrasts. （Ⅳ） Biofacies changes in space and time are sometimes abrupt with little evidence of diachrony, and sometimes gradual. These patterns are clarified in the context of sequence stratigraphy （which they enrich in turn）. （Ⅴ） The paleobiological counterpart of sequence stratigraphy is evolutionary paleoecology, reconstructing communities in deep time. The foraminifera are perfectly suited to investigate the possibility （or likelihood） that global environmental shifts have controlled community turnover in the pelagic, neritic and terrestrial realms.

Two interesting sequences arose in the study of the series expansions of the complete elliptic integrals,which are called the Catalan-Larcombe-French sequence{Pn}n≥0 and the Fennessey-Larcombe-French sequence{Vn}n≥0 *** this paper,we first establish some criteria for determining log-behavior of a sequence based on its three-term *** we prove the log-convexity of{Vn^2-V(n-1)V(n+1)}n≥2 and{n!Vn}n≥1,the ratio log-concavity of{Pn}n≥0 and the sequence{An}n≥0 of Apéry numbers,and the ratio log-convexity of{Vn}n≥1.
