Digital elevation models (DEMs) derived from light detection and ranging (LiDAR) technology are becoming the standard in representing terrain surfaces. They have numerous applications in forestry, agriculture, and natural resources. Although elevation errors are much lower than those derived from traditional methods, accuracies have been reported to decrease with terrain slope and vegetation cover. In this study, we quantified the accuracy of airborne LiDAR-derived DEM in deciduous eastern forests of the Cumberland Plateau. We measured relative elevation changes within field plots located across different slope and ruggedness classes to quantify DEM accuracy. We compared elevation change errors of DEMs derived from three LiDAR datasets: a low-density (~1.5 pts•m−2), a high-density (~40 pts•m−2), and a combined dataset. We also compared DEMs obtained by interpolating the ground points using four interpolation methods. Results indicate that mean elevation change error (MECE) increased with terrain slope and ruggedness with an average of 73.6 cm. MECE values ranged from 23.2 cm in areas with lowest slope (0% - 39%) and ruggedness (0% - 28%) classes to 145.5 cm in areas with highest slope (50% - 103%) and ruggedness (46% - 103%) classes. We found no significant differences among interpolation methods or LiDAR datasets;the latter of which indicates that similar accuracy levels can be achieved with the low-density datasets.

In tropical streams, freshwater shrimp are essential to preserve the structure and function of lotic ecosystems. Shredder shrimp play a fundamental role in organic matter decomposition because these feed on detritus. In addition, they are especially important organisms as they connect all trophic levels at food webs. In natural environments, decaying leaf material may accumulate contaminants, including insecticides and herbicides. At these, shredder shrimp can be exposed to these contaminants through ingestion of leaf litter material. The objectives of this study were to evaluate if the shredder shrimp Xiphocaris elongata display a preference for feeding on different plant species and leaf size areas while also assessing their consumption of leaves contaminated with pesticides. We also evaluated acetylcholinesterase (AChE) activity as a possible biomarker of pesticide contamination using an immunofluorescence and microscopy imaging approach. Our results revealed that the leaf area and plant species more appropriate for future toxicological studies is Spathodea campanulata leaves, with a leaf area of 0.65 cm2. This study also showed that sublethal concentrations of malathion and permethrin in leaves seem to have a significant effect on the ingestion rates of X. elongata, which suggests that the presence of these contaminants influenced feeding behavior. Immunofluorescence in cephalothorax ganglia showed a decline in AChE activity when the sublethal dose of malathion and permethrin increased. The observed results suggest that AChE activity can be used as a biomarker to detect and assess permethrin and malathion exposure on shredder shrimp.

Pancreatic surgery has been one of the last areas for the application of minimally invasive surgery(MIS)because there are many factors that make laparoscopic pancreas resections *** concept of service centralization has also limited expertise to a small cadre of high-volume centres in resource rich ***,this is not the environment that many surgeons in developing countries work *** patients often do not have the opportunity to travel to high volume centres for ***,we sought to review the existing data on MIS for the pancreas and to *** this paper,we review the evolution of MIS on the pancreas and discuss the incorporation of this service into low-volume and resource-poor countries,such as those in the *** paper has two ***,we performed a literature review evaluating all studies published on laparoscopic and robotic surgery of the *** data in the Caribbean is examined and we discuss tips for incorporating this operation into resource poor hospital *** pancreatic case volume in the Caribbean,and financial barriers to MIS in general,laparoscopic distal pancreatectomy,enucleation and cystogastrostomy are feasible operations to integrate in to a resource-limited healthcare *** is because they can be performed with minimal to no consumables and require an intermediate MIS skillset to complement an open pancreatic surgeon’s peri-operative experience.

The role of turfgrasses in C and N cycling in the southeastern U.S. has not been well documented. The objectives of this research were to determine the characterization of chemical quality, clipping decomposition rates, and C and N release from warm- and cool-season turfgrasses. The study was conducted for 46 weeks in 2012 in Auburn, AL. Four warm season turfgrasses were used included (bermudagrass [Cynodon dactylon (L.) Pers. × C. transvaalensis Burtt Davy], centipedegrass (Eremochloa ophiuroides (Munro) Hack), St. Augustinegrass (Stenotaphrum secundatum (Walter) Kuntze), zoysiagrass (Zoysia japonica Steud.), and one cool season turfgrass (tall fescue (Festuca arundinacea Schreb)). Litter was placed into nylon bags at an oven dry rate of 3.6 Mg?ha?1. Litter bags were retrieved after 0, 1, 2, 4, 8, 16, 24, 32, and 46 weeks, and analyzed for total C and N. A double exponential decay model was used to describe mass, C, and N loss. Results indicated that tall fescue decomposition occurred rapidly compared to warm season turfgrasses. Litter mass loss measured after 46 weeks was determined to be 61.7%, 73.7%, 72.2%, 86.8%, and 45.4% in bermudagrass, centipedegrass, St. Augustinegrass, tall fescue, and zoysiagrass respectively. Zoysiagrass litter had a higher lignin concentration, while tall fescue had the lowest lignin. Over 46 weeks’ release of C was in the order: zoysiagrass > bermudagrass = centipedegrass = St. Augustinegrass > tall fescue, and release of N was in the order zoysiagrass > centipedegrass > bermudagrass = St. Augustinegrass > tall fescue. Our study concluded that, zosiagrass is a better choice for home lawns.

The performance of micro flood irrigation （MFI） under different inflow rates was evaluated on 90 m closed ended furrows in the South African Tukulu soil. A single irrigation was used to characterise the surface and subsurface soil water distribution from the 20, 40, 80 and 160 L/min inflow rates treatments. Neutron access tubes were installed to a depth of 1 m at every 10 m distance interval starting at 5 m from the furrow inlet. Soil water content measurements were taken using the WaterMan neutron water meter. The HYDRUS-2D software was also used to provide insight on irrigated furrows soil water content and subsurface water distribution. The 20 L/min produced a stream flow that could advance up to the 60 m furrow distance. The stream flow from the rest of the inflow rates were able to reach the furrow end with the 180 L/min recording the fastest advance time of 23 min. The 20 L/min and 40 L/min had recession period of less than 7 min while the 80 L/rain and 160 L/min lasted more than an hour. Distribution uniformity （DU） at longer furrow distances was the highest from the 80 L/min and 160 L/min with the 20 L/min and 40 L/min recorded similar performances at shorter distances. The 40 L/rain was one of the smaller inflow rates that recorded the highest DU of 0.96 for the generated average infiltrated depth of the 30 m long furrow and therefore should be adopted for furrow distances of less than 60 m on the Tukulu soil.

PIN–PMN–PT piezoelectric crystals with increased rhombohedral-to-tetragonal phase transition temperature

In this work,crystal growth and characterization of PIN–PMN–PT(29–59%PIN and 28–35%PT)were conducted to understand how PIN ratio in the PIN–PMN–PT system impacts its phase stability during ***-quality PIN–PMN–PT crystals with 36%PIN were obtained using the self-seeded Bridgman process,even though the cubic phase In_(2)O_(3) formed at the very beginning of *** melt became more unstable when the PIN ratio in the PIN–PMN–PT system increased to 49%and above,which affected the composition and quality of the as-grown crystals *** increasing the PIN to 36%in PIN–PMN–PT crystal,the rhombohedral-to-tetragonal phase transition temperatures and the coercive field reached 115–135℃ and 4.55.6 kV/cm,respectively,that greatly expanded the operation domains compared to PMN–PT crystals.
