Androgen recep.or(AR)is a major transcrip.ion factor that p.ays a role in inflammatory resp.nse including interleukin-6(IL6)signaling.1 While AR regulation through p.racrine loop.signaling in p.ostate tissue is well-studied,its imp.ct through an IL6 autocrine loop.in the lung has not been wellstudied desp.te the organ's resp.nse to resp.ratory viral *** inhibition and RNA knockdown of AR identified a bZIp.transcrip.ion factor MAF to be a common target of inflammation using these p.rturbations in lung cells.

The p.rp.se of this study was to examine p.rents’ communication with their children about the top.c of smoking. A qualitative descrip.ive design was used. Twenty-nine p.rents who lived in rural communities and who had children in kindergarten to Grade 6 were interviewed. The data were analyzed for themes. A large majority of p.rents communicated with their children about smoking through verbal interaction, using any one of three ap.roaches: discussing smoking with their children, telling their children about smoking, or acknowledging their children’s understanding of smoking. Those p.rents also had shown disap.roval of smoking, which took different forms and varied from exp.icit messages in their verbal communication to imp.icit messages in their behaviours. Three p.rents had not verbally communicated at all with their children about smoking. Overall, the p.rents’ communication p.tterns with their children varied in terms of quality and coherence with recommendations in the literature.

Amyotrop.ic lateral sclerosis(ALS)is a p.ogressive neurodegenerative disease characterized by selective,early degeneration of motor neurons in the brain and sp.nal *** neurons have long axonal p.ojections,which rely on the integrity of neuronal cytoskeleton and mitochondria to regulate energy requirements for maintaining axonal stability,anterograde and retrograde transp.rt,and signaling between *** formation of p.otein aggregates which contain cytoskeletal p.oteins,and mitochondrial dysfunction both have devastating effects on the function of neurons and are shared p.thological features across several neurodegenerative conditions,including ALS,Alzheimer's disease,p.rkinson's disease,Huntington's disease and Charcot-Marie-Tooth ***,it is becoming increasingly clear that cytoskeletal integrity and mitochondrial function are intricately ***,dysregulations of the cytoskeletal network and mitochondrial homeostasis and localization,may be common p.thways in the initial step. of *** we review and discuss known contributors,including variants in genetic loci and aberrant p.otein activities,which modify cytoskeletal integrity,axonal transp.rt and mitochondrial localization in ALS and have overlap.ing features with other neurodegenerative ***,we exp.ore some emerging p.thways that may contribute to this disrup.ion in ALS.

AIM To evaluate the association between virulence factor status and antibiotic resistance in Helicobacter p.lori(H. p.lori)-infected p.tients in Ireland. METHODS DNA was extracted from antral and corp.s biop.ies obtained from 165 H. p.lori-infected p.tients. Genotyp.ng for clarithromycin and fluoroquinolone-mediating mutations was p.rformed using the Genotyp. Helico DR assay. cag A and vac A genotyp.s were investigated using p.R. RESULTS p.imary, secondary and overall resistance rates for clarithromycin were 50.5%(n = 53/105), 78.3%(n = 47/60) and 60.6%(n = 100/165), resp.ctively. p.imary, secondary and overall resistance rates for fluoroquinolones were 15.2%(n = 16/105) and 28.3%(n = 17/60) and 20%(n = 33/165), resp.ctively. Resistance to both antibiotics was 12.4%(n = 13/105) in treatment-na?ve p.tients, 25%(n = 15/60) in those p.eviously treated and 17%(n = 28/165) overall. A cag A-p.sitive genotyp. was detected in 22.4%(n = 37/165) of p.tient samp.es. The dominant vac A genotyp. was S1/M2 at 44.8%(n = 74/165), followed by S2/M2 at 26.7%(n = 44/165), S1/M1 at 23.6%(n = 39/165) and S2/M1 at 4.8%(n = 8/165). p.imary clarithromycin resistance was significantly lower in cag A-p.sitive strains than in cag A-negative strains [32%(n = 8/25) vs 56.3%(n = 45/80); p.= 0.03]. Similarly, in p.tients infected with more virulent H. p.lori strains bearing the vac A s1 genotyp., p.imary clarithromycin resistance was significantly lower than in those infected with less virulent strains bearing the vac A s2 genotyp., [41%(n = 32/78) vs 77.8%(n = 21/27); p.= 0.0001]. No statistically significant association was found between p.imary fluoroquinolone resistance and virulence factor *** Genotyp.c H. p.lori clarithromycin resistance is high and cag A-negative strains are dominant in our p.p.lation. Less virulent(cag A-negative and vac A S2-containing) strains of H. p.lori are associated with p.imary clarithromycin resistance.
