Magnetic and optical properties of NaGdF4：Nd^3＋, Yb^3＋, Tm^3＋ nanocrystals with upconversion/downconversion luminescence from visible to the near-infrared second window

We have designed and synthesized NaGdF4：Nd^3＋, Yb^3＋, Tm^3＋. magnetic nano- phosphors with combined dual-mode downconversion （DC） and upconversion （UC） photoluminescence upon 800 run excitation. Hexagonal-phase NaGdF4：Nd^3＋, Yb^3＋, Tm^3＋ nanocrystals （NCs） with an average size of 21 nm were synthesized using a solvothermal approach. Nd^3＋, Yb^3＋, Tm^3＋ triple-doped NaGdF4 NCs exhibit a broad range of photoluminescence peaks covering a near infrared first/second window （860-900, 1,000, and 1,060 nm）, and visible emission including blue （475 nm）, green （520 and 542 nm） and yellow （587 nm） after excitation at 800 nm. A mechanism involving circulation of energy over Gd^3＋ sublattices as bridge ions and final trapping by the initial activator ions （Nd^3＋） has been proposed. Penetration depth studies indicate that NIR emission is easily detected even at a large tissue thickness of 10 mm. These paramagnetic nanophosphors demonstrate a large magnetization value of 1.88 emu/g at 20 kOe and longitudinal relaxivity value of 1.2537 mM-1.S-1 as a Tl-weighted magnetic resonance imaging contrast agent. These NaGdF4：Nd^3＋, Yb^3＋ Tm^3＋ NCs are promising for applications in biological and magnetic resonance imaging.

Evaluation of hand infections in the emergency department using point-of-care ultrasound

BACKGROUND:We aimed to evaluate the utility of point-of-care ultrasound(POCUS)in the assessment of hand infections that present to the emergency department(ED)and its impact on medical decision making and patient ***:We conducted a retrospective review of patients who presented to two urban academic EDs with clinical presentations concerning for skin and soft tissue infections(SSTI)of the hand between December 2015 and December *** trained POCUS fellowship physicians reviewed an ED POCUS database for POCUS examinations of the *** then reviewed patients’electronic health records(EHR)for demographic characteristics,history,physical examination findings,ED course,additional imaging studies,consultations,impact of POCUS on patient care and final ***:We included a total of 50 cases(28 male,22 female)in the final *** most common presenting symptoms and exam findings were pain(100%),swelling(90%),and erythema(74%).The most common sonographic findings were edema(76%),soft tissue swelling(78%),and fluid surrounding the tendon(57%).POCUS was used in medical decision making 68%of the time(n=34),with the use of POCUS leading to changes in management 38%of the time(n=19).POCUS use led to early antibiotic use(11/19),early consultation(10/19),and led to the performance of a required procedure(8/19).The POCUS diagnosis was consistent with the discharge diagnosis of flexor tenosynovitis 8/12 times,abscess 12/16 times,and cellulitis 14/20 ***:POCUS is beneficial for evaluating of hand infections that present to the ED and can be used as an important part of medical decision making to expedite patient care.

Determinants of COVID-19 Face Mask Litter in Coastal Urban Parking Lots: Implications for Source Modelling of Potential Microplastic Pollution

Despite cities being recognized as being potential sources of microplastic pollution to the wider environment, most surveys of COVID-19 plastic-based litter have been undertaken through linear transects of marine beaches. For the far fewer number of studies conducted on inland and urban locations, the site-specific focus has primarily been surveys along the length of streets. The present study is the first to specifically assess the standing stock (i.e., moment-in-time) of littered face masks for the entire surface area of urban parking lots. The density of face masks in 50 parking lots in a Canadian coastal town (0.00054 m2 ± 0.00051 m2) was found to be significantly greater than the background level of littering of town streets. Face mask density was significantly related to visitation “usage” of parking lots as gauged by the areal size of the lots and of their onsite buildings, as well as the number of vehicles present. Neither parking lot typology nor estimates of inferred export (various measures of wind exposure) and entrapment (various metrics of obstruction) of face masks had a significant influence on the extent of whole-lot littering. In consequence, modelling of the potential input of mask-derived microplastics to the marine environment from coastal communities can use the areal density of face masks found here in association with the total surface area of lots for individual municipalities as determined through GIS analysis.

Activation of stress-response genes by retrograde signaling-mediated destabilization of nuclear importin IMPα-9 and its interactor TPR2

Stress-induced retrograde signal transmission from the plastids to the nucleus has long puzzled plant *** address this,we performed a suppressor screen of the ceh1 mutant,which contains elevated 2-C-methyl-d-erythritol-2,4-cyclopyrophosphate(MEcPP)levels,and identified the gain-of-function mutant impα-9,which shows reversed dwarfism and suppressed expression of stress-response genes in the ceh1 background despite heightened *** genetic and biochemical analyses established that the accumulation of MEcPP initiates an upsurge in Arabidopsis SKP1-like 1(ASK1)abundance,a pivotal component in the proteasome degradation *** increase in ASK1 prompts the degradation of IMPα-***,we uncovered a protein-protein interaction between IMPα-9 and TPR2,a transcriptional co-suppressor and found that a reduction in IMPα-9 levels coincides with a decrease in TPR2 ***,the interaction between IMPα-9 and TPR2 was disrupted in impα-9 mutants,highlighting the critical role of a single amino acid alteration in maintaining their *** of their interaction results in the reversal of MEcPP-associated *** immunoprecipitation coupled with sequencing analyses revealed that TPR2 binds globally to stress-response genes and suggested that IMPα-9 associates with the *** function together to suppress the expression of stress-response genes under normal conditions,but this suppression is alleviated in response to stress through the degradation of the suppressing *** biological relevance of our discoveries was validated under high light stress,marked by MEcPP accumulation,elevated ASK1 levels,IMPα-9 degredation,reduced TPR2 abundance,and subsequent activation of a network of stress-response *** summary,our study collectively unveils fresh insights into plant adaptive mechanisms,highlighting intricate interactions among retrograde signaling,the proteasome,and nuclear transport machinery.
