b.ight light enhances the efficiency of physical activity in comb.nation with a restrictive diet

The purpose of this study was to analyze the effectiveness of measures aimed at correcting ob.sity in women and including b.ight light exposure during aerob.c exercise comb.ned with a restrictive diet. A one-stage, randomized study involved 80 ob.se women aged 20 to 58 years. The inclusion criterion for selecting participants for this research was the presence of primary alimentary-constitutional ob.sity with b.dy mass index equal to or higher than 30 kg/m2. All the women were distrib.ted into three groups according to the set of applied treatments. In Group 1, the women were on a restrictive diet;in Group 2, the restrictive diet was accompanied with daily aerob.c exercise;in Group 3, women were exposed to b.ight light during exercise. b.fore and after the treatment course (3 weeks), b.dy weight, waist and hip circumferences were measured;fat amount was determined b. the impedancemetry method;and oxygen consumption was determined b. indirect calorimetry. Women in Group 1 had reduced b.dy weight, waist and hip circumferences, fat mass and oxygen consumption. Similar changes were identified in women of Group 2, b.t weight loss was greater, and the level of oxygen consumption increased as compared to the b.seline. In women of Group 3, weight loss and increased oxygen consumption were more pronounced than in those of Group 2. The numb.r of metab.lic equivalents (MET) in women of Group 3 increased to nearly 1, which corresponded to the value of this index that reflected the resting metab.lic rate in patients with normal b.dy weight. Thus, exposure to b.ight full-spectrum light increases energy metab.lism and enhances the effectiveness of exercises, despite prolonged food restriction, which is one of the mechanisms to improve the efficiency of ob.sity correction.

Metab.lic syndrome in men and women with upper or lower types of b.dy fat distrib.tion

The purpose of the study was to determine the prevalence of metab.lic syndrome as a cluster of risk factors for atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease and type 2 diab.tes mellitus and its individual components in groups of men and women with primary ob.sity having different types of fat distrib.tion. The study involved 142 men and 185 women with primary alimentary-constitutional ob.sity. The study participants were divided into 2 groups depending on waist-to-hip ratio value. Standardized criteria were used to determine the prevalence of metab.lic syndrome and its individual components among the examined men and women. The ratios of the numb.r of participants with lower or upper type of fat distrib.tion in men and women were 28:114 and 84:101, respectively. Hence the frequency of lower type of fat distrib.tion was 19.7% in men and 45.4% in women (p b.dy fat distrib.tion as compared to upper type were characterized b. a lower prevalence of ab.ominal ob.sity (1.9 times), hypertriglyceridemia (1.4 times), low HDL-C (1.6 times), and hypertension (2 times). The frequency of metab.lic syndrome in men with lower type of fat distrib.tion was lower b. 2.7 times than that of men with upper type of fat distrib.tion. Women with lower type of fat distrib.tion as compared to upper type had a lower prevalence of ab.ominal ob.sity (1.2 times), hypertriglyceridemia (1.8 times), low HDL-C (1.2-fold), and hypertension (in 1.5 times). The frequency of metab.lic syndrome in women with lower type of fat distrib.tion was lower b. 1.9 times than that of women with upper type of fat distrib.tion. b.th men and women in the groups with lower type of fat distrib.tion were missing such a component of metab.lic syndrome as hyperglycemia i.e. they had the minimal risk of type 2 diab.tes mellitus.

SERS-b.sed lateral flow immunoassay of troponin I b. using gapenhanced Raman tags

The lateral flow immuno assay (LFIA) has emerged as a powerful tool for rapid scree ning owing to its simplicity and flexib.lity for detection of various b.omarkers. However, conventional LFIA strips have several disadvantages, including limits in quantitative analysis and low sensitivity. Here we developed a novel surface-e nhanced Rama n scatteri ng LFIA b.sed on non spherical gap-e nhanced Raman tags (GERTs), with Raman molecules (RMs) emb.dded in a 1-nm gap b.tween Au nanorod core and Au shell. Such tags have a strong and uniform surface-enhanced Rama n scattering (SERS) resp on se, an order of mag nitude higher than that of other comm on SERS tags such as Au nano rods, nano stars, Au nano shells with surface-adsorb.d RMs, or spherical GERTs with emb.dded RMs. The feasib.lity of the tags was dem on strated b. the semiqua ntitative and sen sitive detecti on of the heart disease b.omarker cardiac tropo nin I (cTnI). GERTs were conjugated with mono clonal antib.dies and used for LFIA in the same way as ordinary functionalized colloidal gold. The presenee of the target antigen, cTnI, was identified b. Raman microscopy mapping of the test zone. With the SERS-b.sed LFIA, the limit of cTnI detection was ab.ut 0.1 ng/mL. This value is within the diagnostic range of cTnI in the b.ood serum of patients with heart infarction and is 30 times lower than that of the colorimetric LFIA test using the same antib.dies and either GERTs or colloidal gold as lab.ls.

Patterning Nanoroads and Quantum Dots on Fluorinated Graphene

Using ab.initio methods we have investigated the fluorination of graphene and find that different stoichiometric phases can b. formed without a nucleation b.rrier, with the complete ＂2D-Teflon＂ CF phase b.ing thermody- namically most stab.e. The fluorinated graphene is an insulator and turns out to b. a perfect matrix-host for patterning nanoroads and quantum dots of pristine graphene. The electronic and magnetic properties of the nanoroads can b. tuned b. varying the edge orientation and width. The energy gaps b.tween the highest occupied and lowest unoccupied molecular orb.tals （HOMO-LUMO） of quantum dots are size-dependent and show a confinement typical of Dirac fermions. Furthermore, we study the effect of different b.sic coverage of F on graphene （with stoichiometries CF and C4F） on the b.nd gaps, and show the suitab.lity of these materials to host quantum dots of graphene with unique electronic properties.

Reactive Extraction of Alcohols from Apolar Hydrocarb.ns with Aqueous Solutions

The aqueous solutions are evaluated as sustainab.e reactive extraction solvents for the recovery of monohydroxyl alcohols （b.nzyl alcohol, 1-hexanol, cyclohexanol） present in few-percent concentrations in apolar hydrocarb.ns （toluene, n-hexane, and cyclohexane） b. considering two approaches. An aqueous solution containing a reactive extractant, like b.rate salts, b.rate complexes, a monosalt of dicarb.xylic acid, hydroxypropyl-cyclodextrins, and silver nitrate, shows limited potential to b. used. Another approach, in which the alcohol is chemically modified prior to the extraction into an easy-extractab.e form, in this case a monoester/carb.xylic acid, shows much more potential. An environmentally b.nign aqueous solution of sodium hydrogen carb.nate can provide a distrib.tion ratio of b.nzyl alcohol up to 200, leaving the solub.lity of the organic solvent in the aqueous solution unchanged relative to pure water and therefore increasing the selectivity with two orders of magnitude. The modification of aromatic, cyclo-aliphatic, and linear aliphatic alcohols can b. performed efficiently in the apolar organic solvent without need for a catalyst. The recovery of the modified alcohol can b. performed b. b.ck-extraction in comb.nation with a spontaneous hydrolysis.

Association of Erectile Dysfunction and Hypogonadism with Metab.lic Syndrome in Men with Lower Urinary Tract Symptoms of Younger and Older Age Groups

The aim of this study was to evaluate the incidence and severity of erectile dysfunction (ED) and hypogonadism in 193 men presenting with lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTSs) in the younger (20 - 39 years old) and older (40 - 60 years old) age groups depending on the presence of metab.lic syndrome (MetS). Triglycerides, glucose and high-density lipoprotein cholesterol, serum total testosterone (TT), sex hormone-b.nding glob.lin, prostate-specific antigen, pituitary hormones levels were measured in serum. Standardized criteria (2009) were used to determine the prevalence of MetS. Patients were assessed b.sed on the International Prostate Symptom Score (IPSS) and the IPSS-Quality of Life (IPSS-QoL) for LUTSs and the International Index of Erectile Function (IIEF) for ED. Hypogonadism was determined in accordance with the ISA, ISSAM, EAU, EAA and ASA recommendations. In men with MetS in the younger age group the incidence of ED was 2.4 times higher, and that of low TT level and hypogonadism was 8.4 times higher compared to men without the syndrome. In the older age group, an increased incidence of ED and low TT level in men with MetS compared to men without the syndrome was on the trend level, b.t the incidence of hypogonadism was for sure higher (b. 1.6 times). In conclusion, the study showed that ED and hypogonadism are associated with MetS b. a high degree of certainty in young men with LUTSs. In men of the older age group with LUTSs, the presence of MetS is not so clearly associated with ED and hypogonadism due to the fact that the incidence of these urogenital diseases is also high in men without MetS.

Study of the Impact of Rectangular Current Pulses on the Ten Tusscher-Panfilov Model of Human Ventricular Myocyte

The b.havior of the 2006 ten Tusscher-Panfilov model of human ventricular myocytes under the impact of periodic excitation impulses was studied in the b.atb.x simulation environment. The cardiomyocyte model has a limited susceptib.lity to an forced higher frequency excitation rhythm. A high-frequency excitation rhythm can b. forced b. gradually increasing the frequency of excitation impulses. The mechanism of defib.illation pulse impact consists of presumab.y prolonging the refractoriness of cardiomyocytes which undermines their susceptib.lity for a long time to a forced high-frequency rhythm of fib.illation, as a result for which they hinder the propagation of a fib.illation wave. This is the only mechanism of defib.illation that was identified during the simulation. The threshold energy of a depolarizing defib.illation pulse prolonging the refractoriness of the cardio-myocyte varies depending on a delay relative to the excitation impulse (the excitation cycle phase) in a wide range (the maximum value exceeds the minimum b. several thousand times). The results show differences in the mechanisms of impact on a cardiomyocyte b.tween an excitation impulse and a monophasic defib.illation pulse.

A linear system arising from a polynomial prob.em in the approximation theory is studied, and the necessary and sufficient conditions for existence and uniqueness of its solutions are presented. Together with a class of determinant identities, the resulting theory is used to determine the unique solution to the polynomial prob.em. Some homogeneous polynomial identities as well as results on the structure of related polynomial ideals are just b.-products.

Ontogenes and Their Role in Cellular Construction

The genes referred to as ontogenes are responsib.e for conditional mutations. b.sed on the results of the research of conditional mutations in D. melanogaster, we attempt to figure out the b.ological role of ontogenes. We conclude that ontogenes in the process of individual development control the construction of the living organisms of cells (cellular construction), which comprises the induction of cell division, determination of division plane, and the location of daughter cells after the division is completed. The process of morphogenesis consists of cellular construction and protein synthesis. Protein synthesis is controlled b. protein-coding (Mendelian) genes. Mendelian genes are switched on b. ontogenes. In terms of the two-component genome composed of Mendelian genes and ontogenes, we consider 1) the concept of b.ological character;2) interspecific incompatib.lity;3) ontogenesis;4) phylogenesis;and 5) mutagenesis. Ontogenes, which control cellular construction, possess the specific features unusual for Mendelian genes, namely, 1) the activity in germ line tissue;2) remote interaction;and 3) activity in a compacted state (heterochromatization). These specific features of ontogenes suggest that unlike the Mendelian genes with their chemical activity, ontogenes possess another type of activity (b.ophysical) involving induction of an electromagnetic field.
